As a microbial ecologist, Professor Tyson was the first person to publish the use of metagenomic sequencing to assess microbial communities and to inform the culture of novel microorganisms. These pioneering papers highlighted the potential of metagenomics to provide a high-resolution taxonomic and functional picture of microbial communities. Since then, Professor Tyson has continued to develop many of the tools used in the analysis of metagenomic data and is also repeatedly listed on the Web of Science's Highly Cited Researchers list. Professor Tyson is leading microbiome research at the Queensland University of Technology.
