MEXCAL - Key Persons

Abraham González

Abraham is pursuing a M.Sc. degree in Coastal Oceanography at the Autonomous University of Baja California. His thesis project is the study of a long time series analysis of the fish community in the coastal lagoon Los Peñasquitos in San Diego, California. The data and information for this analysis are from an approximately a 30 year period that includes water quality, physical-chemical parameters, water temperature anomalies, lagoon closure periods, and fish population counts. The aim of this project is to characterize the fish community structure and find its relationship to the changes of the lagoon's water quality from 1986 to 2018. This is a very important project because the outputs will provide valuable scientific information of possible future scenarios in estuaries and coastal lagoons of the west coast of North America due to the oceanographic dynamics expected from climate change. His research interests are among the areas of biological and chemical oceanography, climate change and oceanographic anomalies effects in marine ecosystems and organisms distributions, and marine environmental management.

Daniel Diaz

I am an Oceanologist specialized in aquaculture and fisheries. Currently the technician and laboratory manager at MexCal. I am the go to for anything that needs to be done, and I'll always do it with a smile (and lots of coffee). I am really passionate about diving and field work. Trying to share experiences with students and colleagues.

RESEARCH INTERESTS I am a benthic ecologist and my main lines of study are benthic invertebrate taxonomy, ecology, and sediment contaminant chemistry. Due the increasing anthropic/climatic pressures that threaten biodiversity, it is essential to understand the structure and dynamics of biological communities. I am particularly interested on studying the benthic invertebrate fauna of the Southern California Bight coastal lagoons. I am also collaborating with MexCal to develop a long term monitoring program for the coastal lagoons of Baja California.
