David M. Smith

Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, Dr. Smith received his medical degree from the University of South Carolina Medical School. He completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Tennessee and a pathology fellowship at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Besides his duties as Practice President and Lab Medical Director, he provides expertise in genitourinary and breast pathology.

Jacques Legier

Dr. Legier was a pathologist with PPA for decades, and tirelessly devoted himself to excellence in diagnostic services. He was a scholar and a gentleman that we all miss. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago, just as he was about to retire from the group.

John C. Maddox

Job Titles:
  • Pathologist / Oncologic and Hematopathology
Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology as well as hematopathology, Dr. Maddox received his medical degree from the UVA Scholl of Medicine. He completed a three-year residency in anatomic pathology at Stanford University. Dr. Maddox is a leading national consultant on asbestos-related diseases and reviews about five percent of mesotheliomas cases in the U. S. as an expert witness. Dr. Maddox did his fellowship in Oncologic Pathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, and a fellowship in Hematopathology at MCV/VCU, Richmond, VA.

Katie E. Simpson

Ms. Simpson received her Bachelor of Science degree from Alma College and her MS degree as Pathologists' Assistant from the University of Maryland. She trained as a PA at the University of Maryland Hospital, Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital among others.

Lucy E. DeFanti

Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology as well as cytopathology, Dr. DeFanti received her nursing degree from the University of Maryland and her medical degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, where she also completed a fellowship in cytopathology. Dr. DeFanti completed a fellowship in surgical pathology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Michael A. Schwartz

Job Titles:

Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, Dr. Schwartz received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical School and completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he also served as Chief Resident and Attending Pathologist. His areas of special interest and expertise include head and neck, lung, breast, liver, cytopathology and the molecular pathology of solid tumors.

Rodney L. Slyter

Mr. Slyter is ASCP certified as a Pathologists' Assistant and Histotechnologist (HTL). He trained at the Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, AZ and served as associate assistant professor at Medical College of Virginia (MCV). He is currently a Fellow member of the American Association of Pathologists Assistants.

Theresa S. Emory

Job Titles:

Board Certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, Dr. Emory received her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed her residency at the Mayo Clinic and spent six years at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology as a Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Pathologist. She is the senior author of the Atlas of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopic Biopsies, written in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Departments of Gastroenterology and Pathology. Pathologists and gastroenterologists around the country seek her opinions.
