It has always been a sort of lottery system for breaking ties. We don't usually all start on the same hole, and to break ties has always seemed like the luck of the draw. We have been taking all the players whose net scores (actual score minus your handicap), were tied, going to the first hole, and either rewarding or punishing them based on how they did on that one hole. If there were still ties we then went to the next hole until all the ties were broken. If a 15 handicap had a bad first hole he was out, even if a 30 handicap managed to get a better score on that one hole. I have always thought that the player getting the fewest amount of strokes should get some advantage since he managed to tie a player getting more strokes.
