Dr. Tamerler is the Wesley G. Cramer Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department, Professor at the Bioengineering Program and serves as the Associate Dean for Research of the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas. She is the Director of Biomediated and Biomimetic Materials at the Institute for Bioengineering Research. Dr. Tamerler joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Kansas in 2013. Previously, she held positions at the University of Washington (UW) as a Research Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department and also as the Assistant director of the Genetically-Engineered Materials Science & Engineering Center, which is supported by NSF MRSEC Program. Preceding her positions at UW, Dr. Tamerler was Professor (Tenured) at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) where she served as the Chair of their Molecular Biology and Genetics Department from 2002 through 2010 (while concurrently holding a Visiting Professor position at UW). During her time at ITU, Professor Tamerler founded and was the Director of the Molecular Biology-Biotechnology & Genetics Research Center (ITU MOBGAM), a multi-disciplinary initiative involving faculty members from the College of Engineering as well as the College of Arts and Science. She played an integral role in raising funds for the construction of the 40,000 sq. ft. MOBGAM building as well as the innovative research conducted within the Center. Dr. Tamerler's PEPTIDE Lab focuses on PEPTIDOMIMETIC ENGINEERING AS A PLATFORM TECHNOLOGY FOR INNOVATIVE DESIGN OF EFFECTORS. These effectors serve for diverse applications including Molecular Biomimetics: Biology Enabled Nanotechnologies; Biofabrication of Functional Hybrid System; Precision Biomacromolecular assembly for biocatalysis; Molecular Additive Manufacturing: Bioprinting to Integrated Functional Systems and Restorative and Regenerative Materials Design. She has published over 100 refereed journal articles, 30 conference proceedings, 5 book chapters, as well as multiple patents. She has organized several symposia and internationally accredited conferences, including those sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS), The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS), and the Materials Research Society (MRS). Dr. Tamerler has been awarded visiting scientist and professorship positions at the University of Westminster (UK) and the University of Nagoya (Japan), respectively. Dr. Tamerler is a Fellow of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA), the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
