Amanda Tyler

Amanda Tyler joined the Public Health Institute Center for Wellness and Nutrition (PHI CWN) in 2022 as a Research Scientist supporting school-based wellness initiatives, tribal- and racial-equity-focused evaluation, and state and regional SNAP-Ed evaluations. As a researcher, Amanda is passionate about using transformative mixed methods to advance equity in public health practices. Amanda comes to PHI CWN with a wealth of experience in equitable MEL (Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning) practices. Prior to joining PHI CWN, she was a Senior Evaluation Associate for an Atlanta-based consulting firm specializing in providing culturally responsive and equitable evaluation (CREE) to a diverse group of clients including philanthropic, nonprofit, and government organizations. Amanda also served as a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist in the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) at the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC). While at ARC, she specialized in creating efficient evaluation tools to identify technical assistance opportunities for the county and nonprofit partners providing services to the region's older adult population and those living with disabilities. Amanda was also a member of the Translation and Evaluation Team in the Physical Activity and Health Branch (PAHB) in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) working to synthesize and translate research and provide technical assistance to grantees and partner organizations working to promote physical activity. Amanda earned her Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Epidemiology from Georgia State University School of Public Health and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Spelman College. Her passion for health and advancing health equity has been the driving force for her career over the last 10 years. In her free time, Amanda enjoys staying active through different sports and going on walks through the city with her rescue dog.

Amber Martin

Amber Martin joined the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition (CWN) in 2019 as the Communications Project Manager. In this role, she oversees the implementation and operation of communications, outreach, and marketing-oriented projects and initiatives while also providing leadership and support expertise for internal and external clients and funders. Ms. Martin has extensive experience in community engagement, media relations, content development, and market research. A results-oriented public relations professional, Ms. Martin is passionate about building, connecting, and empowering communities through compelling storytelling, innovative policy, and meaningful service. Prior to joining CWN, Ms. Martin served in both the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors, building visibility, recognition, and a positive market presence for diverse demographics and messages through traditional and digital media. Her areas of expertise include key messaging/brand strategies, nonprofit sponsorship/support, and civic engagement. Ms. Martin holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations from San Jose State University. She is dedicated to uplifting the community and believes that through policy change and activism, equitable health outcomes are attainable for all. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling the globe with her closest friends, binge-watching Netflix, and discovering new hiking trails.

Angela Dennis

Angela Dennis is a Program Manager at the Public Health Institute Center for Wellness and Nutrition (CWN). She serves as the point-of-contact for federally-funded coordinators who serve Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) recipients in the southeast territory of the United States. She has over 15 years of progressive experience in social marketing approaches that promote health literacy and nutrition and physical activity education. Within the health field, Ms. Dennis's areas of expertise include, managing government-funded programs, providing high-level technical assistance, building community partnerships, and targeting hard-to-reach audiences with culturally appropriate resources. She is super passionate about seeing the most vulnerable populations arm themselves with information gained from health programs and then, take actions to prevent chronic diseases. Ms. Dennis worked at CWN from 2002 until 2015. Prior to rejoining CWN in 2019, she worked at California's first chartered university as a Marketing and Communications Manager in Information Technology (IT). In this role, she managed all aspects of formal communications regarding IT activities to over 5,000 faculty, staff, and students on the university's three campuses. She communicated emergency situations, impending hardware, and software upgrades, and online, educational opportunities via various channels. Ms. Dennis created branding guidelines and wrote content for web pages and social media platforms. In addition, she co-managed the implementation of IT's first internship program. Ms. Dennis also worked as a Health Promotions Specialist with the leading Medi-Cal managed care provider in the Central Valley. She designed a successful, mentorship program to complement the existing Health Careers Scholarship Program that she managed. The mentorship program paired high school and college students with professionals who encouraged them to study in the healthcare field and pursue employment in the Central Valley after graduation. While there, Ms. Dennis also led and promoted a healthy workplace, oral healthcare, and literacy initiatives. Betty Sun

Betty Sun, MS, RD is a Project Manager at the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition (CWN). She works on projects related to nutrition security, access to healthy food, Produce Prescriptions, Park Prescriptions, park & public health collaborations, and geo-spatial mapping & analysis. In previous roles at CWN and the University of California Nutrition Policy Institute, she led state-level social marketing campaigns with the Children's Power Play! Campaign and Worksite Program provided training and technical assistance to the Communities of Excellence in Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity Prevention program, and assisted local health departments with policy, systems, and environmental change evaluation as part of SNAP-Ed work with the California Department of Public Health. More recently, at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy - Institute at the Golden Gate, she helped create the ParkRx.org resource hub and facilitated learning communities with the Healthy Parks, Healthy People: Bay Area collaborative. Betty holds BS and MS degrees in Community Nutrition from Cornell University and is a Registered Dietitian.

Brian Petrie

Brian Petrie joined Public Health Institute (PHI) as a Research Associate in 2018. His role at PHI is working with the SNAP-Ed program and managing the PEARS evaluation database on behalf of the California Department of Social Services. Brian comes to PHI with a background in testing and assessment. Most recently he worked with the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) developing licensing examinations and conducting occupational research for professions licensed by the DCA. Brian has a Master's in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from California State University, Sacramento. He earned his Bachelor's in Psychology from the University of California, Davis.

Carol Mills

As a Program Administrator with CWN, she will provide fiscal and administrative support to projects within CWN's portfolio. Before joining CWN in May 2022, Carol Mills worked as a Program and Operations Manager for the Georgia Institute of Technology located in Atlanta, Georgia. Carol has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and comes to CWN with a wealth of experience in grants management and administration within the medical research and higher education fields. A native of the Caribbean Island of Barbados, Carol previously lived in New York and Southern California, and most recently Florida, before relocating to Georgia seven years ago with her husband of 24 years. She is an avid reader and loves music, dancing, and listening to her favorite band Pentatonix on repeat, an activity she happily shares with her daughter.

Cassie Chandler

Cassie is the Assistant Director of Global Nutrition and Partnerships at the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition. As a thought partner and program co-leader, Cassie brings deep experience working across sectors to increase household and community resilience, improve nutrition and facilitate access to health services among marginalized, rural populations in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Cassie has worked in global health and community development for 20 years. Her roles as technical assistance provider, trainer, behavior change curriculum designer, and project manager were developed and honed at the University of California, Davis' Center for Reducing Health Disparities, and for more than 10 years at Freedom from Hunger (FFH), now Grameen Foundation. At FFH, Cassie's work centered around designing sustainable, multi-sector programs and partnerships to drive demand for health services among community-owned platforms, primarily women's solidarity groups. As Health Director, Cassie led the organization's integrated health strategy and technical assistance for programs in West Africa, South America, India, and the Philippines. Her passion for global health and nutrition began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras, where she focused on maternal and child health. Cassie holds a Master's of Public Health from Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington. In her free time, Cassie enjoys outdoor activities and travels with her husband and two young girls.

Diana Peña

Diana Peña is a Community Outreach Associate within the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition. Diana's primary role supports the Los Angeles Grocery Voucher Program, which aims to combat food insecurity by partnering with community-based organizations (CBOs) to give residents in Los Angeles County access to nutritious foods. Diana has a strong background in community health. Previously she worked as a Community Health Worker with Los Angeles County to provide COVID-19 education to increase COVID-19 vaccination rates among Los Angeles residents. Diana also served as a Public Health Associate at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she was stationed at the Georgia Department of Public Health (GA DPH). There, Diana collaborated with CBOs and GA DPH to reduce child obesity via health promotion campaigns. Diana attained a Bachelor of Arts in Public Health at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster Pennsylvania. During her free time, Diana enjoys oil painting, traveling, and trying new cafés. Diana is based in Los Angeles County.

Dr. Raissa Sorgho

Dr. Raissa Sorgho is the Director of Global Nutrition and Partnerships at the Center for Wellness and Nutrition of the Public Health Institute. She leads the design, development, and execution of three global human-centered food and nutrition programs in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. In addition to establishing the CWN's global nutrition portfolio, Dr. Sorgho oversees the alignment of leadership strategies with health equity principles, manages partnerships, and client development, and advances policies in key markets to support sustainable development. Dr. Sorgho completed her undergraduate at Bucknell University (USA) and holds a master's in public health and a doctorate in global health from Heidelberg University (Germany). Her expertise includes health (nutrition and heat), climate change (adaptation and sustainability), and policy (review and implementation), with an emphasis on evidence-based decision-making. She has professional experience in conducting political economic analyses of national drug supply chains in southeast Asia, implementing agro-biodiversification and nutrition randomized control trials in east and west Africa, and investigating the association between reducing emissions and health co-benefits in western Europe. Dr. Sorgho has published and presented her work at high-level conferences including the World Health Summit and the Conference of Parties while retaining her affiliation as a researcher at Heidelberg University, and a consultant for the United States Agency for International Development and the World Health Organization.

Emilie McClintic

Emilie McClintic joined the Center for Wellness and Nutrition in March 2019 as a Research Associate. She supports the research and evaluation team to provide full evaluation coverage to various CDSS projects and the CDC REACH grant project. Emilie has expertise in evaluating behavior change interventions and nutrition education and food access programs including SNAP-Ed programs. Emilie earned her MPH in Global Health and Public Nutrition from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in 2016. She served in the Peace Corps as an Urban Agriculture volunteer in Senegal from 2009-2012, during which time she developed an interest in the intersection between food systems and human health. Jamie Frederick is the Assistant Director of Research and Evaluation in the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition (CWN). Jamie has worked in the field of evaluation and research for the past 10 years, primarily working to support and lead monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems for international non-governmental organizations. Jamie joined the CWN evaluation team in 2021 and brings a strong background in evaluation design, data collection and analysis. As a Research Scientist, she provides evaluation support on CWN's regional and statewide SNAP-Ed evaluation projects in addition to other projects focusing on wellness and nutrition. Jamie received a dual Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Boston University. She also has a bachelor's in Communication from the University of Dayton.

Jeannette Hughes Spotville

Jeannette is passionate about equity and strives to make programs accessible and appropriate for all community members. She brings experience in program design/implementation, training and facilitation, and community partner relationship building. Jeannette has a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Dillard University and a Master of Public Health from Claremont Graduate University/School of Community & Global Health. She is actively involved in her community as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Partnership for a Positive Pomona, and previously a board member for Ujima, Inc. Jesse Tedrick

Jesse Tedrick joined the Public Health Institute in 2014 as a Youth Coordinator with Cultiva La Salud, a program dedicated to creating healthier communities by working with community residents to foster changes in policies and healthy eating and active living environments. There he coordinated youth projects in Fresno County that allowed youth to research health and physical activity access in their communities to create a health policy, systems, or environmental change. He joined the Center for Wellness and Nutrition in 2016 as a Program Associate to continue his passion to support Youth-Led Participatory Action Research (YPAR) projects as well as new approaches and innovations. Jesse obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology from California State University, Stanislaus in 2012. He currently is certified as a Recreation and Leadership Specialist through the National Association for Physical Activity and was previously certified as a personal trainer thru the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Jesse was also named Youth Leadership Institute's "2015 Partner of the Year" for his outstanding ability to collaborate with other youth and community-serving organizations.

Jill Scott

Jill Scott joined Public Health Institute (PHI) in April 2020. Her role as the Administrative Assistant for the Center for Wellness and Nutrition. She comes to PHI with a background in administrative duties, organizing events, and scheduling and running meetings through Zoom and WebEx; her previous work experience includes working in the public health field as Executive Assistant to the CEO at the California Medical Association for over 5 years. Ms. Scott enjoys camping, gardening, crafting, and spending time with family and friends. Karla Fernandez

Karla Fernandez is currently a Project Coordinator for the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition. As a Project Coordinator, she helps her team ensure active and prospective projects launch in the most effective way to aid in improving population health. Before PHI, however, she had a range of experience in the health and wellness industry. From personal training to interning at the CalWIC Association, to health coaching, Karla has always had the drive to mitigate the health equity gap by helping people build sustainable, healthy habits. Additionally, Karla obtained her Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition from the University of California, Davis. To further enhance her education, she decided to pursue her Master of Arts in Health and Digital Communication from Johns Hopkins University. That said, she can marry her degrees to provide the most optimal health strategies for ongoing campaigns to successfully encourage long building healthy habits amongst individuals. When she is not working, she loves to use her spare time to cook, try out new restaurants, travel, power lift, paint, and dance salsa/bachata.

Katherine Hawksworth

Katherine Hawksworth is a Program Manager with the Center for Wellness and Nutrition, a program of the Public Health Institute. Ms. Hawksworth provides training and technical assistance to schools, health departments, and community members to create healthier environments. Ms. Hawksworth has experience in Local School Wellness Policy, curriculum development, training design, and facilitation, and continues to work to address school and community nutrition, physical activity, and other wellness topics. Kelley Ferguson

Leonel Jaramillo

Leonel (Leo) Jaramillo is a Program Associate with the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition. Mr. Jaramillo works on programs related to food insecurity, grocery/food access, and other nutrition-based projects, working in partnership with several community-based organizations across Los Angeles County. Mr. Jaramillo has over a decade's worth of experience working in the non-profit sector, focusing on community development and health and wellness. Prior to joining the CWN team, Leonel worked with Wholesome Wave as a Programs Special Project Manager and with the Youth Policy Institute (YPI) as the Food and Nutrition Program Supervisor. During his role at YPI, Leonel worked on several programs including the U.S. Department of Education's Carol M. White Physical Education Program and the USDA's Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive, reaching thousands of families in the greater Los Angeles area. Leonel earned his B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2011. During his free time, Leo enjoys learning new skills, traveling, and trying new recipes; he considers himself quite the foodie. Leonel is based in Ontario, California.

Lesley Kroupa

Lesley serves as the Policy Specialist for the Center for Wellness and Nutrition and Roots of Change at the Public Health Institute. She is responsible for identifying and analyzing policy issues related to nutrition, health, and regenerative agriculture at the local, state, and federal levels using both a health equity and food system framework. Previously, she was the Interim Deputy Director at the Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy, Teachers College, Columbia University. There, she provided strategic policy recommendations for ongoing research projects and led advocacy campaigns related to nutrition policy and nutrition education programs. Before joining the public health field, Lesley spent 11 years practicing law in New York City at Cooley LLP and as in-house counsel. Before law school, she worked at the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. She has a B.A. in Government from Smith College, an M.S. in Nutrition and Public Health from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a J.D. from The University of Michigan Law School.

Maggie Wilkin

Job Titles:
  • Director of Research and Evaluation
Margaret (Maggie) Wilkin, MPH, is the Director of Research and Evaluation at the Center for Wellness and Nutrition. Maggie brings strong project management skills with experience in planning a diverse portfolio of projects from conception to completion. She also has extensive experience working with vulnerable communities and evaluating PSEs and community coalitions and partnerships in addition to direct education and social marketing interventions. Maggie has 20 years of experience conducting evaluations of a wide variety of studies including community-based public health intervention studies, evaluation of SNAP-Ed programs, WIC redemption data studies, and large-scale analysis of Medicaid data claims. She has served as a lead analyst on food and nutrition-related evaluations including studies funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service and Economic Research Service as well as state-funded contracts and foundation grants. Maggie is an experienced data analyst with expertise in advanced statistical methods including multivariate regression modeling, longitudinal data analysis, multi-level modeling, sample size determination and survival analysis. She is passionate about finding creative ways to translate evaluation results for a variety of audiences. Maggie has co-authored sixteen articles published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Best Article of 2019 in the Journal of Nutrition and Education Behavior. In her free time, Maggie enjoys quilting and exploring Michigan in her vintage RV.

Maran Kammer-Perez

As the Director of Fiscal and Administration, Maran Kammer-Perez oversees the fiscal operations for grants and contracts, accounts payable, and payroll. She has 27 years of tenure with PHI and over 30 years in office administration, specializing in both non-profit and state budgeting, accounting, and graphic design. Maran owns and operates her own design studio specializing in print media with a penchant for metal art and mixed media. She is an avid longtime aquarist and amateur astronomer who makes her home in the greater Sacramento with her husband of twenty-six years. Sai Khang

Sai Khang joined PHI CWN in August 2020 as a Health Educator. Prior to CWN, Sai was a referral specialist. As a referral specialist, she communicated with patients and doctors' offices to ensure that all documentation needed is present and authorized. Sai has a BS in Family and Consumer Science concentrating in Food and Nutrition from California State University (CSU), Sacramento. One of the passions she has is providing knowledge/information to underserved communities so that the community knows what programs are available to them or know what steps to take to be able to access healthier foods. Some of the volunteer work Sai participated in was the BAC Yard at CSU Sacramento, Blood Drive, University of California, Davis Labor and Delivery unit, HEAD Start, and Pop Up Pantry. Sandra Torres

Sandra Torres joined the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition (CWN) in September 2018 as a Project Coordinator. Now as a Project Manager, she provides project leadership and management of a range of food access projects and initiatives, perform as project lead responsible for the results of a work team and have more time dedicated to providing design support of CWN communication tools and resources. Sandra has a wealth of experience and strong commitment and dedication to making an impact in communities across California. Prior to joining CWN, Sandra worked as a CalFresh Outreach Specialist and a Community Health Leader responsible for conduction outreach, education, and enrollment for CalFresh. She also worked with the Tobacco Policy Program and Tobacco Education and Prevention Program of Ventura County Public Health where she managed the Bus of Tobacco Horrors, a mobile hands-on educational exhibit that educates youth on the physical dangers of tobacco use and much more. Sandra holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Science with an emphasis in Community Education from Fresno State. In 2020, she achieved her master's degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy Leadership from the University of San Francisco. In her spare time, she enjoys watching her favorite baseball team Los Angeles Dodgers. Her goal is to one day visit all 30 Major League Baseball parks.

Sofia Monterroza Figueroa

Sofia Monterroza Figueroa joined the Public Health Institute Center for Wellness and Nutrition in 2019. Growing up in Merced and seeing firsthand the health disparities in the area has been a driving factor in her interests in community education. During the past summer, she worked with two farmers markets in Fresno County under the Farmers Market Initiative to promote the use of benefits at the farmers markets. She recently joined the School Health and Wellness team to bring extra program support. Her most recent experiences include writing literature reviews for a health impact assessment, translating documents, and entering survey data. In the spring of 2018, Sofia studied abroad in Ghana and completed an internship with a nonprofit organization, Mawulolo Youth Network. There, she served as a mentor to 4th-grade students while developing and teaching health curriculum to her students. This work connected her interest in teaching and public health and enabled her involvement in moving forward with health education. Sofia holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Health with a minor in Psychology from the University of California, Merced. She is bilingual and bicultural in Spanish. In her free time, she enjoys hand embroidery, exercising, and spending time with her family and friends.

Stephanie Carillo

Stephanie Carillo, MAS, RD, is the Deputy Director of Programs at the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition. Stephanie promotes health and nutrition for under-served communities through health initiatives that focus on increasing food access and physical activity opportunities through healthy retail and worksite wellness interventions through the SNAP-Ed program, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded healthy retail strategies and worksite wellness initiatives funded by a Growers Association. Stephanie has been promoting health and nutrition for underserved communities since 2001. Her dedication to serving the community includes a focus on the early years from infancy to age five. Formally, a county WIC Director, she provided nutrition programs, health services, and breastfeeding support and built the capacity of community health workers through training programs, and advised on the development of a department-wide wellness program. As a certified lactation educator, Stephanie is passionate about proper nutrition early on in a child's life. Her eight years with the WIC program were dedicated to providing families with education on good nutrition, increased access to healthy food, and connection to community resources. Stephanie is a registered dietitian from Stony Brook University in New York and a certified lactation educator. She holds a Master's of Advanced Study in Maternal and Child Nutrition from the University of California at Davis. Yvette García

Yvette García joined the Public Health Institute Center for Wellness and Nutrition (PHI CWN) in August 2017. Her role as a Program Administrator provides fiscal and administrative support to California Department of Social Services projects as well as the Center for Disease Control grants. She comes to PHI with a background in clinical services and administration; her previous work experience includes administrative roles at a Rural Indian Health Clinic and a Davita renal care clinic. Yvette also has extensive experience working in the education and non-profit sectors. Yvette received her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice in 2010, and her Master's in Public Administration with an emphasis in Healthcare Administration in 2014, both from California State University, Chico.
