Jason Currin

Job Titles:
  • Director
  • Owner
  • Owner and Director of DPS
Jason Currin is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts with a degree in Music Performance. As a student, he was awarded the first grant from the Bryan Oliver Memorial Fund for Outstanding Artistic Achievement and was a winner of the North American Talent Search. As a performer, Jason has appeared around the world with different ensembles, including two European tours as Principal percussionist with MIT Symphony Orchestra. He is featured on many recordings with both orchestral percussion performances as well as rock drumming for various television soundtracks. In addition, Jason has extensive experience working with theater and dance companies, having performed and composed for a number of venues and festivals. Jason relocated from Atlanta, Georgia to Greenville in 2011 to create a unique school-wide curriculum rooted in World Percussion and the Performing Arts at Legacy Charter School. Soon after, he became an Education and Outreach performer for the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, and also joined the faculty at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. During his years of teaching, composing, and performing both stateside and internationally, Jason had a vision of a music school that was dedicated to exemplary teaching, a focus on the whole student, and building an inclusive community through music. In 2015, he set out to make that dream a reality, setting up shop in his detached garage with just a handful of students. DRUM Percussion Studio quickly grew in size, adding students and staff over the next few years, and in 2018, relocated to its current location in downtown Greenville where faculty serves 200 students each week. As the owner and director of DPS, Jason leads the studio in curriculum design, educational workshops and performances, professional development, and community outreach. He still spends plenty of time in the classroom, though, teaching individual private lessons and group classes for students of all ages. He is also the Director of both the Youth and the Adult Percussion Ensembles, who have performed throughout the region at various festivals, recitals, and events. Jason and his wife Leslie live in Greenville with their two lively children, Olive and Silas.
