The efforts of the Outreach and Communications Skills Subcommittee are to provide for professional development programs and activities for scientists to learn public communication skills to directly interact with non-scientist communities; support any needed MRS member involvement in the development of sustainability and education symposia and tutorials as well as associated broader impact education and sustainability focused programs such as panels, presentations and workshops. The primary target audiences are students, young professionals and mid-career educators; The secondary target audience is late career professionals.
The Editorial Board oversees the overall quality of the magazine as well as develops content to deliver timely commentary, news, trends and event listings to keep the materials community apprised of information important to their research and their profession.
The Volume Organizers work with the editor and the chair of the Editorial Board to develop technical theme topics that capture a snapshot of the state-of-the-art of materials research. They identify leading experts to contribute the overview articles, and they review the articles to ensure that they are useful references for specialists but are also presented at a level understandable to a broad scientific audience.
The Meetings Assessment Subcommittee reviews all major MRS meeting activities (Spring/Fall Meetings, co-sponsored events, workshops, and non-technical activity integration) to ensure quality is maintained across the MRS meeting event spectrum.
The Program Development Subcommittee plans and oversees the major multi-symposium society meeting programs (e.g. Fall, Spring and IMRC), including tutorials, and it oversees other technical meeting content as these meetings develop. PDSC also oversees broader impact programming in coordination with the Meetings Committee and others.
The Policy Outreach WG provides opportunities for MRS members to visit key Congressional Offices and government agencies to advocate for basic science funding and engages representatives of funding agencies to participate in the MRS Spring and Fall Meetings to explain current initiatives and the mechanics of proposals to attendees. It also plans and hosts an annual Government Agency Summit, during which agency leaders meet with the presidents of materials-related societies to discuss topics of mutual interest.
The Grassroots Advocacy WG serves the materials science community by providing two-way communication between MRS members and national legislators. Through this group's efforts, members stay aware of legislation that affects scientific research. In return, the working group provides an opportunity for members to contact the President and members of the United States Congress through signed letters that the members send through Materials Voice. The Grassroots Advocacy WG also issues Public Affairs Alerts to notify members of urgent issues and hosts the Materials Voice kiosk at the MRS Spring and Fall Meetings.
