Since 1995, California has lost 30 percent of its psychiatric inpatient beds. A phenomenon experienced nationally, with the number of inpatient beds available to psychiatric patients declining steadily across the United States over the last several decades. The result has contributed to an increase in patients arriving at hospital Emergency Departments with behavioral health concerns, and patients remaining longer in ED beds awaiting transfer to community inpatient psychiatric beds... When Adventist Health + Rideout began to experience an increase in patients with behavioral health needs locally and feel the wait times for one of the 16-beds available in the Sutter-Yuba County Behavioral Health Facility they knew it was time for a paradigm shift.
