Abigail Newell

Abigail Newell, MA is a Director of Market Research at Cancer Support Community. Abigail is responsible for designing and conducting mixed methodology research projects on health service delivery, patient experiences, and their quality of life. Her research interests include intersectional health disparities, political advocacy, and health equity among Black, Latine, and LGBTQ+ communities. Prior to joining CSC, she collaborated on four academic research teams at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, performed program evaluation for sexual health non-profit SHIFT NC, and served as an assistant editor for Social Forces journal and reproductive justice advocate for non-profit Deeds not Words. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she is an award-winning undergraduate instructor, where she received her PhD in sociology.

Adam R. Borden

Adam R. Borden is the Vice President of Market Access and Reimbursement at Cleerly, Inc. Adam has had a diverse career in healthcare and has developed deep knowledge and understanding of federal health policy, provider reimbursement, and the changing landscape of healthcare delivery in the United States. Adam currently leads market access and reimbursement efforts for Cleerly's AI-based products aimed at predicting risk and preventing heart attacks. Prior to joining Cleerly, Adam spent five years at Siemens Healthineers leading policy and reimbursement strategy for all business areas. During this time, Adam also served as Chair of the Reimbursement Committee at the Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) and Chair of the Diagnostics Payment Work Group at AdvaMedDx. Adam was also a Vice President at the premier D.C.-based policy consulting firm, Avalere Health. At Avalere, Adam worked closely with life sciences manufacturers, providers and advocacy groups on policy, reimbursement, value messaging, and market access strategies and engagements. Earlier in his career, Adam worked in policy and reimbursement at the American Gastroenterological Association and in financial management and clinical education roles at several leading academic medical centers. Alex brings nearly 15 years of corporate relations and development experience to CSC, with the last seven years within the cancer space at ALSAC/St. Jude and Family Reach Foundation. Alex resides in Chapel Hill, NC with his wife Jackie, son Emmett, and dog Howie.

Amanda Batista

Amanda (she/her/ella) joined CSC in October 2021 as the Development Database Manager. She is responsible for maintaining all aspects of CSC's donor database and supporting donor relation efforts. Prior to joining CSC, Amanda worked as the Development Associate at the Worker Justice Center of New York, and as a Community Development Manager for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life events. She graduated in 2012 from SUNY at Albany with a bachelor's degree in Spanish Linguistics. As a triple negative breast cancer survivor, Amanda is passionate about advocacy, support, and resources for those working through a cancer diagnosis. Amanda is originally from Kingston, NY, and is married with a daughter, 2 rescue cats, and a rescue dog. In her free time, she enjoys reading, baking, dancing, and gardening.

Audrey Davis has over 10 years of direct, supervisory, and administrative experience, is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and a certified grant proposal writer, and is certified in Project Management - Lean Process. She has presented at local, regional, and national conferences, and has been sole and second author in peer-reviewed journals involving faith and healing. She attended Central High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before completing her undergraduate studies at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Audrey later attended graduate school in St. David's, Pennsylvania, at Eastern University. Most recently, she created and managed programs and projects that addressed the social determinants of health, with specialized attention to the intersection of behavioral wellness and health outcomes. She also oversaw related reinvestment plans and contracts, served on several steering and subcommittees with internal and external partners, and developed new and innovative approaches to systems integration in the short- and long-term. As CEO of the Academy, Sullivan promoted evidence-based innovations in health care delivery, facilitated the research and publication of policy briefs articulating the Academy's position to improve the health of populations and achieve health equity, and established in partnership with the ABIM Foundation Choosing Wisely to reduce overused and costly treatments and procedures. Sullivan formerly served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy to former U.S. Senator Evan Bayh and played a central staff role in the development of significant health care-related legislation including the Children's Health Care Quality Act. As Vice Chancellor for External Affairs at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Sullivan provided leadership in government relations and university administration garnering statewide support for substantial new funding for biomedical research. Sullivan was the principal advisor on social service policy serving as Cabinet Secretary of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. The state Medicaid program was restructured to reduce the rate of growth of Medicaid expenditures while maintaining the availability of quality health care for Indiana's neediest citizens and the statewide Step Ahead process was implemented to improve children's services by linking federal and state resources to local planning councils. Sullivan earned her PhD in Environmental Science from Indiana University, Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Maryland, and Certificate for Senior Executives in State and Local Government from the John F. Claire's current role at the Cancer Support Community (CSC) focuses on sharing CSC's patient insights externally and ensuring the patient experience remains central to all that CSC does. Prior to becoming EVP of Insights & Impact, Claire led CSC's national patient education and outreach efforts for 5 years. The award-winning Frankly Speaking About Cancer education programs were co-created with cancer patients & caregivers. Programs were culturally-adapted to meet the needs of specific populations and speakers of multiple languages and produced in a variety of print, digital, and in-person formats. Claire came to CSC from the Urology Care Foundation, where she managed national patient education programs and disease awareness campaigns with partners including the National Football League. As Executive Director of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, Claire developed the first National Bladder Cancer Awareness Day. While the Executive Director of the Breast Cancer Resource Center in Austin, Texas, she doubled their patient advocacy and outreach programs. Claire began her work in health advocacy while part of the team that opened the National Domestic Violence Hotline in 1996. Claire holds an MBA from the University of Oregon and an undergraduate degree from Rice University.

Clay Alspach is a principal based in Washington, D.C. Clay specializes in federal health care policy and advocacy related to the FDA, Medicare, Medicaid, private health insurance, digital health, public health, and pandemic preparedness. Prior to joining Leavitt Partners, Clay served as Chief Health Counsel for Chairman Fred Upton of the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee. Daneen Sekoni

Daneen has more than a decade of experience in healthcare regulatory and policy topics, including provider reimbursement, payment and delivery system reform, and the Affordable Care Act. In addition, she has international healthcare experience related to developing HIV/AIDS provider networks. Daneen joined Cancer Support Community after working as Associate Vice President of Advocacy at Healthsperien LLC, a nationally recognized healthcare policy consulting firm, where she established a new advocacy function within the firm. In this role, she served as the staff lead for the MultiCancer Early Detection (MCED) Consortium's Health Equity Workgroup and led the Policy and Advocacy team for the Coalition to End Social Isolation and Loneliness, where she provided strategic direction, policy analysis, and execution of the Coalition's advocacy strategy on priority areas such as mental health, caregiving, and social connection. During her tenure, she also developed and nurtured robust relationships with members of Congress, regulatory agencies, coalitions, and other key stakeholders. Previously, Daneen served as Director of Health Care Reform Policy at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, where she championed the association's national advocacy strategy related to essential health benefits, alternative payment models, health equity, and nondiscrimination in healthcare. Her efforts led to patients gaining access to habilitation and rehabilitation services and receiving in every health insurance plan's Summary of Benefits & Coverage the details of what services are covered and how many are covered. In addition, Daneen worked to promote and protect the healthcare rights of all patients and caregivers by ensuring that individuals with limited English proficiency and individuals with disabilities had the availability of language assistance services and/or auxiliary aids and services to enable them to identify themselves, participate in and understand their healthcare. Prior to that position, Daneen worked as Regulatory Affairs Manager at the American Academy of Neurology, where she oversaw policy issues including Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement. Daneen started her career in health policy with the American Society for Radiation Oncology, where she analyzed payer coverage, coding, and reimbursement policies for radiation oncology services. With nearly 30 years experience in government, politics, and advocacy, Dan specializes in strategic planning, building organizational capacity, assembling coalitions, facilitating meetings, and leadership development. Prior to founding AdvocacySmiths, Dan was staff director for the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Prior to that he launched and led the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the American Cancer Society's nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy arm. Dan also founded One Voice Against Cancer (OVAC). Before joining ACS CAN, he served as a state director, chief of staff, and agriculture committee staff director for U.S. Senator Tom Harkin. A native of Iowa, Dan has also served in leadership roles for several presidential campaigns.

David M. Fox

David Fox is a leading authority on the regulation of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, biological products, combination products, and controlled substances. Known for his collaborative approach to complex regulatory issues, David has successfully resolved numerous disputes between sponsors and staff at FDA on products that raise novel regulatory issues. As a former senior lawyer for FDA and throughout his career in private practice, David has been deeply immersed in the regulatory side of drug development, advising industry teams on gaining approval for novel products across numerous therapeutic classes, including respiratory, oncology, pain, addiction therapy, neurology and psychiatry, anti-infectives and anti-virals, vaccines and metabolic disorders. Dawn Ely

Dawn Ely joined Cancer Support Community in July 2019 and serves as the organization's Director, Events. She is responsible for providing event planning expertise and support to Cancer Support Community's internal departments that host events and meetings. With a focus on logistics and operations, Dawn oversees numerous in-person, virtual, and hybrid events of all types to ensure their successful implementation. In collaboration with colleagues from across the organization, she seeks to promote Cancer Support Community's work and advance its mission through developing high-quality, impactful experiences that engage a variety of attendees and supporters. Dawn first came to Cancer Support Community as a Manager, Partner Relations. In this role, she produced conferences, summits, and other major events for Cancer Support Community's worldwide network of local and community partners as well as managed communications and administration duties for her team. After three years, she was promoted to Director, Training & Conference Operations. This position focused on creating professional development and continuing education programs for licensed mental health and medical oncology professionals. Dawn's work led to the creation of Cancer Support Community's inaugural Learning & Training Program, which sought to establish the organization as a leader in psychosocial oncology training and engage funders in supporting these initiatives. Her successful track record of developing meetings, conferences, and webinars led to her transition to the Director, Events, role she holds today. Before joining Cancer Support Community, Dawn worked at The Humane Society of the United States, first as a Major Gifts Associate and then as a Conferences & Events Coordinator. Her work ranged from coordinating staff retreats to co-leading registration and vendor communications for major conferences. Dawn's background in fundraising, customer service, volunteer coordination, and meetings management enables her to create people-focused events that connect with and delight audiences of all sizes. Dr. Cole has been the on-site primary investigator for over 30 clinical trials and participated in over 50 clinical trials in Multiple Myeloma and Malignant Hematology. He has been published in national journals and presented his research at the American Society of Hematology and the American Society for Apheresis national meetings. Indicative of his commitment to equity of cancer care, patient empowerment, and community education, Dr. Cole has won awards for his work in teaching, Multiple Myeloma research, and patient advocacy. Dylan H. Roby

Dylan H. Roby, PhD, is Associate Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. His research focus is on Medicaid, community health centers, safety net hospitals, delivery system change, and the Affordable Care Act's implications for insurance markets, system redesign and access to care. He teaches courses on health politics and policy in the MHA, MPH and PhD programs in the department. Roby collaborates with colleagues at UC Berkeley and UCLA on the California Simulation of Insurance Markets (CalSIM) microsimulation model (www.calsim.org), which he helped develop over the past decade, and is a member of the cost analysis team for the California Health Benefit Review Program (www.chbrp.org). Although his primary academic appointment is in the University of Maryland's School of Public Health, he is a faculty associate with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and an adjunct associate professor of health policy and management at UCLA. Dr. Roby has been interviewed and quoted by various media outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, CNN, Fox News, Al Jazeera America, Cosmopolitan, CBS radio, and NPR-affiliates including KPCC, WAMU, Wisconsin Public Radio, and KQED. As the former director (2012-2014) of the Health Economics and Evaluation Research Program at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, Dr. Roby helped developed the Center's capacity for analysis of Medicaid claims data, Medicaid waiver evaluation, and conducting confidential data analyses and surveys. He served as the associate director of the UCLA MPH Program in Health Policy and Management from 2010-2012. Prior to becoming the director of Health Economics and Evaluation Research, he was a senior researcher at the Center from 2003 to 2011. Prior to that, Dr. Roby worked for four years as a senior research associate at The George Washington University Center for Health Services Research and Policy. He worked on safety net issues, including data analysis and research on community health centers and public hospitals. During his first stint in Washington, DC, he also worked for the National Association of Community Health Centers, the National Governors' Association's Center for Best Practices, and the Progressive Policy Institute.
