LEGAL ASSIST NI is a Northern Ireland based legal consultancy company established in response to the forthcoming Statutory Registration Scheme for Providers of Publicly Funded Legal Services ('the Scheme') - or register for legal professionals who undertake legal aid work. The Scheme is being introduced by the Department of Justice for Northern Ireland ('the Department') along with the Legal Services Agency of Northern Ireland ('the Agency'). It is deemed 'necessary to ensure that those who receive public funding for the delivery of legal services provide the appropriate level and quality of service to their clients and the public purse' (Department of Justice targeted consultation document, February 2017)... LEGAL ASSIST NI was established by Laura McKnight in early 2017 in response to the Statutory Registration Scheme for all Providers of Publicly Funded Legal Services. Laura recognised that the Scheme posed further significant changes to the already somewhat fluid legal aid system..
