Exposure to the natural elements, like ultraviolet radiation, humidity, acids and saline solutions are producing a sequence of chemical changes in the composition of asphalt, specifically in the process of oxidation which leads to the loss of elasticity and adhesive properties. As the result of these losses, the components of asphalt can not retain their consistency with other components which creates micro fissures.
