By steps and stairs up the face of Craignaw we soon reached the summit. It is the most interesting hill in the southern uplands. The serrated stonework formation of its upper levels, and the commanding outlook which it affords of the surrounding mountains and glens owing to its central position entitle it to that honour. We noticed Noddin' Bob plodding away homewards. Once he looked towards us, and we felt sure that he was still chuckling. Our curiosity was aroused by what he had told us, and we paid a visit to the Deil's Loaf. It is quite a unique boulder, which must be regarded as the most ancient specimen of the whole-meal loaf in existence, and proves that there is really nothing new under the sun. From the summit the climber can choose his own way down, but we chose the easy route, which led to the little hut on the Mid Burn between Loch Neldricken and Loch Valley, and from that point by the path which leads all the way to the Buchan farm-house. We made a slight deviation in order..
