Dr Laura Pereira

Job Titles:
  • Researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Centre
Dr Laura Pereira is currently a researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Centre of the Stockholm University Centre for Food Policy. Previously she worked at City, University of London on the SHEFS project where she led the governance for food system transformation in South Africa component. She is also currently a senior researcher working on the Programme on Climate Smart Livestock in East Africa (PCSL) and is the co-PI of the CCAFS scenarios project together with Dr Joost Vervoort. Having completed her DPhil in Geography at Oxford University in 2012, she undertook post-docs in sustainability science at Harvard's Kennedy School and under the Bioeconomy chair at the University of Cape Town before moving to Stellenbosch University to research development investments in the Anthropocene at the Centre for Complex Systems in Transition. She is interested in the interface between traditional knowledge and innovation, the role of futures techniques in transformative change and developing innovative methods for knowledge co-production in developing country contexts. Her work uses the food system to unpack broader challenges and solutions to the complexity of governance for sustainability. As well as her focus on food systems research, she was a Co-ordinating Lead Author for UN Environment's GEO-6 and a Lead Author for the IPBES Regional Assessment for Africa and is contributing to the Africa chapter of the IPCC's 6 th assessment report. She also sits on the IPBES Task Force on scenarios and models. Laura also has an extraordinary appointment at the Centre for Complex Systems in Transition at Stellenbosch University.

Dr Owen Fenton

Job Titles:
  • Principal Research Officer With Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development
Dr Owen Fenton is a Principal Research Officer with Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development Authority in Ireland, with over 15 years' experience in research in the agricultural sector. He is Visiting Professor for Environmental Science at University of Sheffield and Adjunct Professor for Environmental Engineering at NUI-Galway. Dr Fenton is a beneficiary in multiple EU HORIZON projects that examine ways to characterise, examine and mitigate pollutant sources, losses and impact within agricultural landscapes (e.g. REFLOW, Inspiration, WaterProtect, AgriChemWhey). He has an international collaboration network, which includes on-going student exchanges between Teagasc and the Chinese Agriculture University in Beijing. Dr Fenton's areas of expertise include soil hydrology, hydrogeology and characterisation of pollutant losses, transformation, time lags and fate within agricultural landscapes. More recently, his research has focused on rewetting of peat soils, holistic (water, air, soil) assessments of new organic amendments used in agriculture as soil amendments or fertilizers. Other work has focused on fertilizer equivalency value of organic fertilizers and secondary products, emerging contaminants, the bioeconomy and development of physical and biological soil quality indicators.

Jørgen Eivind Olesen

Job Titles:
  • Professor in Climate Change and Agriculture at Aarhus University
  • SAB Vice - Chair
Professor Jørgen Eivind Olesen is Professor in climate change and agriculture at Aarhus University and adjunct professor at University of Copenhagen. He has a very broad experience on the interaction between agricultural (and agroecosystem) activities and the environment. This involves both the effect of agriculture on environment and the effect of environmental change on agroecosystems. He also has an extensive and broad network in Europe and elsewhere related to this. Some of the experiences also cover semi-managed ecosystems. He was involved in initiating Danish research on agrometeorology. He has lead several interdisciplinary projects, including projects on integrated wheat production, application of remote sensing and GIS in agriculture, development of a whole-farm simulation model, and several projects on organic farming and reduced tillage. He has participated in more than 10 EU projects and concerted actions on the effect of climate change on agriculture and on greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities. He is currently involved in three EU projects on climate change: Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from livestock systems; Interaction between climate change and soils; and Novel legume cropping systems. He is currently project leader of two national research projects and participates in several other national and international projects.

Prof. Dr. Luisa M. Trindade

Job Titles:
  • Leader of the Biobased Economy Groups
  • Wageningen University & Research, the Netherlands
Prof. Dr. Luisa M. Trindade is the leader of the Biobased Economy Groups and a Full Professor of Bioresources Breeding and Genetics at Wageningen University & Research. The overall theme of her research is on the genetics and breeding of (new) crops that are better suited for a Circular and Biobased Economy. Specific areas of her interest include designing plants for whole biomass use. She is particularly interested in the efficiency and sustainability of plant bioresources in a production chain contest. Her research focuses on developing tools to breed for plants that are efficient in te use of (natural)resources and produce high biomass yields with the right properties for different products, both food and non-food applications. Luisa has (co-)authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications, mostly in Q1 Journals. She is member and/or advisor of the Editorial board of different journals, including GCB Bioenergy, Bioenergy Research and Frontiers in Plant Science. She has coordinated several national and international consortia. Currently she is participating in three EU consortia aiming to develop new crops for Europe: new protein crops (LIBBIO), new/better fibre crops (GRACE) and different crops for marginal lands (MAGIC). Prof Trindade is often advisor of both public and private organizations, national and international, on different issues related to breeding of (new) crops.
