Dr Alessandro Sancino

Dr. Alessandro Sancino (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in Management at the Department of Public Leadership & Social Enterprise, where he brings extensive academic experience from posts held in Italy, Switzerland, Peru' and the UK. Alessandro is a truly international scholar and he has published in top journals in the fields of public administration and regional studies with co-authors from about 20 different Countries. He is a member of the Executive Board of PUPOL (Public and Political Leadership Network) and of the Regional Studies Association Publications Committee. His research has been funded by several institutions, such as The College of Policing in UK, the UK Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Netherland Institute of Government, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). Before coming to the UK, Dr. Sancino held top political leadership positions in Italy, nationally during the Monti Government and locally, including leader of the Council in his home town (the youngest in Italy at the time of his election, 2007) and councillor for the Milan metropolitan area. Dr Sancino's research is focused on cities, democracy, government-citizens relations, public value and social innovation. Some of the topics he is currently researching are: place-based leadership approaches, especially city leadership, the managerial work of city managers and smart cities; the relationship among technocracy, technology, populism and social movements in 21 st century democracy; co-production of public services; the social context (mega-trends, grand themes and societal challenges) and the role of public management. Dr Sancino's teaching interests centre around the areas of strategic management for public purposes, corporate social responsibility, city management and political leadership. In the past he has taught postgraduate modules on human resource management in public sector, public network management, city management and co-production of public services at the Post Graduate School Business & Society of the Catholic University of Milan. At the Open University (OU) he has been producing modules on the role of context (economic, political, global) in business and management and on leadership practice. He has successfully chaired and been part of the team of the B100 module, the biggest undergraduate module at the OU.

Alex Bristow is Senior Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour at the Open University Business School. She previously worked at the Universities of Lancaster (where she completed her PhD), Surrey, and Birmingham. Alex is Director of the OU's Research into Employment, Empowerment and Futures (REEF) academic centre of excellence (the role she shares with Caroline Clarke). She is also Chair Elect of the Academy of Management Critical Management Studies (CMS) Division, Associate Editor of Management Learning, Co-Founder of CMS InTouch, and Co-Founder of the Critical Careers Network (CCN). Research interests Alex's research takes a critical approach to management, work, and organisation. She is particularly interested in: complexity, including tensions, contradictions, dialectics, and paradoxes political aspects of organisation, organising, and leadership, and their relationship with other organisational issues (change, identity, inclusion, knowledge, learning, expertise, technology) careers and, in particular, both doing and researching careers differently innovative approaches to research and writing Alex has published widely in high-quality international journals, including Academy of Management Learning and Education, Ephemera, Human Relations, Leadership, Management Learning, Organization, and Organization Studies. She is Co-Editor of the book Doing Academic Careers Differently: Portraits of Academic Life (2024) and contributed chapters to the edited books on The Future of Management Education (2022), The SSCI Syndrome in Higher Education (2014), and The Dark Side 2: Critical Cases on the Downside of Business (2013). Alex's PhD thesis is a winner of the Best Dissertation Award of the Academy of Management CMS Division (2011). Alex has supervised nine Doctoral students to successful completion, with five further supervisions currently in progress. She is also actively involved in the training and development of Doctoral students and early-career academics at institutional, national, and international levels, and at the OU has completed her term as the Deputy Director of Research Degrees for the Faculty of Business and Law (2019-2022). She has contributed to the development of innovative Doctoral programmes, designed and led Doctoral training modules, and developed the FBL Teaching Scheme for PhD students. Alex is currently at full PhD supervision capacity but welcomes invitations from current PhD students and supervisors seeking an external examiner. Alex is a co-founder of the Critical Careers Network (CCN), an international, interdisciplinary community for those interested in researching careers critically and also developing their own or others' careers differently from established mainstream norms. By 'critical' we mean questioning career performativity, functionalism, managerialism, linearity, and individualism, as well as other career norms. The purpose of CCN is to foster collaboration in critical career research and education, and to act as a forum to support career development for those who do not identify with expected career conventions. CCN is open to all academics, activists, and practitioners interested in critical approaches to careers. Alex is also a founding editor of CMS InTouch, a global digital platform for real-time conversations on critical issues in management and organisations. CMS InTouch works in partnership with the Academy of Management CMS Division and the journal Organization to connect and support critical scholars, activists and practitioners across geographical, political, financial and other boundaries through free and open webinars and online events. Alex is Associate Editor of Management Learning. She is currently co-editing a Special Issue of Management Learning on 'One hundred years of Paulo Freire: Rethinking critical pedagogy, management learning and education' (in production) and a Special Issue on ‘Learning to do careers differently: challenges, tensions, and possibilities' (paper submission deadline 2 nd September 2024). Alex is also an inaugural member of the British Academy of Management Peer Review College. Alex is an executive member of the Academy of Management Critical Management Studies Division, in the five-year Division Chair track role. As part of this track she has completed her terms as PDW Chair (2021-2022) and Scholarly Program Chair (2022-2023), and is now Division Chair Elect - a role she shares with Ghazal Mir Zulfiqar at LUMS, Pakistan.

Dr Anna John holds PhD from Dublin City University Business School in Ireland (2011) and an Exec. MA in International and European Relations and Management from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands (2004). Dr Carla Pereira

Dr Carla Pereira has joined the OU Business School (Faculty of Business and Law / Department for People and Organisations) in February 2022 as a Lecturer in Operations & Supply Chain Management. She also holds the position of Visiting Lecturer for the Masters in the Civil Engineering programme at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC), supervising and conducting research projects on urban resilience and lean construction. Prior to her role at the Open University, Carla held the position of Assistant Professor within the Department of Production and Systems Engineering at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC, Joinville, Brazil) from 2016 to 2021. She had also worked in other Brazilian universities (PUC, UNIP and UFSCar) from 2014 as a lecturer in Operations & SCM. Dr Pereira holds a B.Eng. (2008) degree in Production Engineering from the State University of Maringá (UEM / Brazil), and MSc. (2011) and DSc. (2014) degrees in Production Engineering from the Federal University of São Carlos (Brazil), with exchange studies at Cranfield University's School of Management in the United Kingdom. Research interests Carla's research interest covers different approaches in the supply chain management, such as risk, sustainability, food waste and resilience. She is also interested in lean thinking (manufacturing, distribution, construction and healthcare). From 2016 to 2021, Carla coordinated a research group in supply chain (Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Supply Chain), and following her move to the United Kingdom, is now a sitting member of it. Some of the research projects conducted within this group include The Role of Sustainable Practices in Resilient Supply Chains; The Influence of KPIs in creating Resilience in Supply Chains; and The Application of Lean Tools on Process Improvement. Additionally, Dr. Pereira is part of several broad projects in conjunction with the Federal University of Sao Carlos (UFSCar) in resilience, food waste reduction and food recall (all of them from a supply chain perspective). These projects were financially supported by FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation). She is also working on a collaborative project between Polytechnique Montreal (Canada) and the Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy) in digital maturity and resilient strategies for operations. Currently, she is involved in a pilot project (funded by FBL research seedcorn funding) about ‘Exploring distinctive skills and capabilities required for supply chain professionals working in the service industry'. Another key areas of her current research interest are: ‘resilient practices as an alternative to deal with surplus food for human consumption' (potential future proposal for PhD students) and ‘lean and sustainable approaches in the construction sites' (master students' supervision). She has published in key academic journals in the area of O&SCM, such as the Journal of Cleaner Production, the International Journal of Production Economics, Supply Chain Management: an International Journal, and the Journal of Industrial and Production Engineering. Dr Charles Barthold is a senior lecturer at the Open University. Previously, he worked at Kingston University and the University of Leicester. He holds a PhD from the University of Leicester (2015), a Masters in Philosophy from Paris-Panthéon-Sorbonne University and a Masters in Social Sciences from Sciences-po Paris. Research interests Charles employs a variety of approaches to organisation studies and leadership in relation to contemporary economic, environmental and social issues. Firstly, he is interested to study how organisations and leadership reproduce power relations. This includes different types of organisational power relations such as organisational control; anthropocentrism in relation to the environment; and organisational logics informed by gender, racialisation and precarious work. Secondly, his project is to analyse how resistance, politics and ethics in organisations can bring about novel forms of democratisation and emancipation. Thirdly, Charles is interested about organisational discourses. Methodologically, his work is qualitative (ethnography, film analysis, discourse analysis) or conceptual. It is linked in particular to studying discourse and visual culture. Charles is a member of the Research into Employment, Empowerment and Futures (REEF) academic centre of excellence. Finally, Charles is associate editor for Culture and Organization and one of the editors of MayFly Books. The work of Charles was published in leading journals such as Organization; Journal of Business Ethics; Business Ethics: A European Review; Critical Perspectives in Accounting; Scandinavian Journal of Management; Gender Work and Organization; Culture and Organization; and Theory, Culture and Society. Charles also published a book: Resisting Financialization with Deleuze and Guattari. Charles co-organised a ‘Creaturely Ethics, Poetics and Animal Studies' stream at the 11 th International Critical Management Studies Conference (2019).
