It gives me immense pleasure to work as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Uttara University (UU), a twenty-one-year-old leading Private University in Bangladesh which follows the US curricula where each discipline of education is complemented by strong liberal arts component. This university has been founded by Professor Dr. Azizur Rahman who graduated with a Ph.D. in Economics from Vanderbilt University, USA and worked with US government for long time. The legacy of Professor Rahman who served for long time as the founding Vice-Chancellor has been rightly pursued by the current Vice-Chancellor Professor Eaysmin Ara Lekha who has a Ph.D. in Bangla Linguistic from Jadavpur University, the premier academic institution in India.
UU is a premier academic center of excellence where medium of instruction is English in all subjects except Bangla. UU provides enormous scope and potential for students all over the country who want to achieve higher education at an affordable cost. The University is situated near the Uttara Metro station, whereby it is connected to all areas of Dhaka City. There is also a timely free bus transport service connection to the campus from the city center to areas outside the city and the suburbs.
Currently, we are offering both Bachelor and Masters degree in fourteen disciplines from Arts, Social Science, Business and Engineering. Students completing these degrees from this University can easily compete with international level education around the world.
UU has a vibrant campus with modern infrastructural facilities and a student life with enjoyable environment in terms of sports, music and other cocurricular, and extra-curricular activities under different clubs and associations. Dr. Mohammed Sharif has a B.A. (Hons.) and an M.A. in Economics from the University of Dhaka and an M.A. in Political Economy and Ph.D. with Distinction from Boston University. He taught at the University of Chittagong before going to the United States of America for higher studies. After completing his studies at Boston University, he joined the University of Rhode Island, USA where he taught for 22 years as Assistant, Associate and Full Professor. His specialty is Economic Development. During his tenure at the University of Rhode Island, Professor Sharif has published numerous scholarly articles in professional international journals. In addition he has published two scholarly books both published by Ashgate Publishers. He also has presented his works in various professional conferences including annual meetings of the American Economic Association and World Congress of the Econometric Society. He has been a regular speaker at various public forums and TV and radio talk shows, and has been interviewed by many newspapers. Moreover, he used to organize an annual conference at the University of Rhode regularly.
After taking early retirement from the University of Rhode Island, Professor Sharif joined East West University as its Vice Chancellor in 2007 and successfully served it for four years. For his contribution to education during his long career, Dr. Sharif won many awards. Among them, Best B-School Award by CMO Asia held in Singapore in 2010 and Global Award by World Education Congress held in 2012 in Mumbai are his latest recognitions.

Prof. Dr. Eaysmin Ara Lekha, current Vice-Chancellor of Uttara University, was also the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university. In recognition of her meritorious services and experience in the field of education at the time, she was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor by the then Hon'ble Chancellor of this University. Before joining as Pro-Vice-Chancellor, she was the Dean of the School of Education and Physical Education and also the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Education. She is the author of a number of books. As a patron of learning, Dr. Lekha has established a couple of educational institutions including Sabira Rouf College, Gopalganj.

Prof. Dr. M. Azizur Rahman, founder Vice-Chancellor of Uttara University, is a former Economic Adviser of the US Embassy, Dhaka, a renowned academician of the country and an eminent economist of international repute. He is also an alumnus of Vanderbilt University, a Nobel Laureate University in USA. He possesses ingenuity in national education that benefits the students who would like to build up their sustainable career in modern global market. In this spirit, Dr. Rahman established a remarkable number of educational institutions including Uttara University, Dhaka where meritorious and enthusiastic students are benefited by their merit with qualitative ingredients.
