Dr. Alan Schwartz

Dr. Alan Schwartz is a world-renowned sleep medicine specialist with an innovative, patient-centered approach to diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. He has held leadership positions at Johns Hopkins Sleep Center for the past three decades. He was most recently Director of the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center, where he specialized in using nerve stimulation and tracheal and nasal insufflation to help patients successfully manage obstructive sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing. Dr. Schwartz's rich history of research and product development allow him to draw from a wide spectrum of treatment options to make recommendations well-suited for each individual patient. Dr. Schwartz has authored more than 150 articles and is inventor on three patents. He was co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Interdisciplinary Sleep Research from 2009-2019, where he supported a panoply of sleep research studies and focused on developing physiologic tools to detect, assess and treat a wide variety of sleep and breathing disorders. In addition to his private practice and research roles, Dr. Schwartz is an accomplished educator and recipient of the David M. Levine Excellence in Mentoring Award from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Medicine. He spent more than 30 years teaching for JHU's School of Medicine, rising to Professor of Medicine. From 2003 to 2018 he was also the Director of the Johns Hopkins Clinical Sleep Fellowship Training Program, in which he mentored physicians who have gone on to make significant contributions in the field. Dr. Schwartz continues to give presentations on sleep medicine around the globe. Dr. Brian Bohner

  • Founder and President of Sleep Medicine Associates of Maryland
Dr. Brian Bohner is board-certified in sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) and with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). He also is certified with ABIM in internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care medicine. He earned his medical degree from Penn State University College of Medicine and completed his specially training at USAF Medical Center Keesler and Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. He provided pulmonary and sleep medicine services during his career in the United States Air Force at Carswell USAF Base Hospital where he served as the intensive care unit and sleep center director. Dr. Bohner is the founder and president of Sleep Medicine Associates of Maryland (SMAM), one of the largest sleep medicine practices on the East Coast. He is also a founding partner of Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates of Baltimore (PCCAB) and currently serves as the managing partner of the practice. He is medical director of the Central Maryland Sleep Center in Towson and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital Sleep Center in Baltimore. He practices pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Maryland Saint Joseph's Medical Center and sees pulmonary and sleep patients in PCCAB's Towson, Maryland office location. PCCAB is actively involved in sleep pharmacologic and CPAP research. Dr. Bohner is currently recognized as a "Top Doc" in Sleep Medicine by Baltimore Magazine for the most recent 11 consecutive years. He is a past president of the Maryland Sleep Society, and in 2018 was awarded the society's Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Bohner has been invited to present at local, regional, and national sleep meetings. He also travelled overseas to provide sleep medicine courses to several international medical schools. His academic focus has been on providing highly successful treatment to patients utilizing a unique educational product, followed by a customized treatment approach for each patient. Dr. Bohner lives in Sparks Maryland with his wife Wendy and son Justin. They enjoy traveling and managing a small animal farm. In the Sleep Academy series, you will be introduced to a different member of the farm at the end of each session!

Dr. David Weisman

Job Titles:
  • Associate Program Director and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown School of Medicine
Dr. David Weisman is an associate program director and assistant professor of medicine at Georgetown School of Medicine. He is a graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency training at the University of Illinois at Chicago. After serving as a fourth-year chief resident at the University of Illinois at Chicago he remained as faculty member until 2002 when he moved to Baltimore. Since that time, he has worked at MedStar Health and became a teaching core faculty member in 2003. Dr. Weisman's scholarly work focuses on improving residency training in evidence-based medicine, residents' engagement in quality improvement activities and research that involves experiential learning and hypothesis testing. He has completed a certificate in point of care ultrasound training through SHM/CHEST and has developed a point of care ultrasound curriculum focused on enhancing resident clinical assessments. At MedStar Good Samaritan and MedStar Union Memorial Hospitals, he is the committee chair of the Mortality Committee; and former President of the Medical Staff at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. In addition, he has a special interest in teaching students and residents about interpretation of the medical literature. He oversees the evidence-based medicine curriculum and monthly Journal Clubs. He has helped to develop a resident research curriculum and has published in several peer-reviewed journals with residents and students. He is a triple recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award and the Dr. Conley Award recipient for recognition for resident teaching and research, Maryland ACP in 2019. He is a Baltimore native and likes to give back to the community by serving as an active primary care physician with over 600 patients in his practice. Most of all, he enjoys teaching residents and students the intricacies and challenges of general internal medicine. Dave spends most of his free time with his wife and chasing after their two boys.

Dr. Peter Sloane

Dr. Peter Sloane is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Cornell University Medical College in New York and completed his specialty training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Prior to entering practice in 1991, he had participated in clinical and basic laboratory research in acute respiratory distress syndrome; this research continued over the years as a site investigator in the National Institute of Health's ARDS Network. He also has a special interest in the application of information technology to enhance patient care and medical education. Dr. Sloane was a founding partner, prior managing partner, and past president of Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates of Baltimore (PCCAB). He is currently Chief of Pulmonary Medicine, Director of Respiratory Care, and Associate Director of Critical Care at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and also serves as Chief of Pulmonary Medicine and Associate Director of Critical Care at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. He is on the teaching faculty of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Dr. Sloane has garnered seven Top Doctor recognitions from Baltimore magazine and two Golden Apple Teaching Awards from MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. He was elected a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians. Prior to joining PCCAB, Dr. Sloane was the Ward Melville Valedictorian of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a National Institute of Health National Research Service Award recipient. Dr. Sloane and his wife, Amy, live in Owings Mills, Maryland. He has two sons who reside in the Washington DC area and one daughter in Sydney, Australia. He is currently seeing outpatients with pulmonary and sleep disorders in PCCAB's Towson, Maryland office and caring for patients along with teaching resident physicians and medical students at MedStar Health. He enjoys traveling, spending time with his family and his favorite two hobbies, robotics (where he has been a mentor for the great US FIRST Team 1719 "The Umbrella Corporation" for almost 10 years) and photography (look for some of his photographic work at the end of each session!)
