Adam Kuczynski

Adam Kuczynski is a PhD Economist and researcher at SEO. He applies his skills and expertise to find pragmatic answers and solutions to a wide variety of questions, for both the public and the private sector. Adam joined SEO in 2022, and works at the division Finance, Regulation and Governance. His activities include developing policy evaluations, quickscans, strategic monitors and performing valuations. He enjoys working on empirical analyses, and often makes use of the latest, most sophisticated econometric models and techniques. Next to his work as a researcher, Adam is an enthusiastic full-stack developer, and a skilled data scientist. Herein, he has a keen interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Before joining SEO, Adam completed a bachelor's degree in Economics and a research master degree in Economics at the University of Maastricht and the National University of Singapore. For both degrees, he graduated with distinction. Following these studies, he enrolled in a PhD programme at Maastricht University. The PhD programme also included a brief research visit at the City University of Hong Kong. His PhD research focused on the relationship between economic crises and political turmoil, on the developments of income inequality and income redistribution and on the macroeconomic consequences of financial liberalisation.

Albert Rutten

Albert Rutten works for SEO's labor division since 2023. He obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degree from Tilburg University. In addition, he got his PhD degree in November 2023 from the same university. During his PhD, Albert specialized in handling CBS microdata. He uses these data to estimate the causal effect of several Dutch labor market reforms by making use of several econometric estimation techniques (causal inference). Summaries of his research papers are already published in ESB and MeJudice. In addition, he also appeared on the Young Economist Podcast to talk about his research. Currently, he is also a fellow of Netspar, network for studies on pension, aging, and retirement. Albert works on a variety of labor market topics within SEO.

Antonia Petrat

Antonia is junior researcher at the cluster Competition, Aviation and Innovation. She is working at SEO Amsterdam Economics since June 2022. During her bachelor studies in Economics at the University of Hamburg, Antonia did an exchange year at the University of Amsterdam. Afterwards, she completed two master programs at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam: Economics and Econometrics. Within her master thesis in Economics she conducted a causal impact analysis in R in order to analyze the effect of the introduction of the new code of conduct for mortgage loans in 2011 on the Dutch housing market. She expanded this thesis into a scientific publication. Within her thesis in Econometrics she examined whether the inclusion of Google Trends data within a traditional model for house price prediction (dynamic factor model) can improve the forecasting accuracy. In the course of her studies, Antonia gained experience with working with statistical software to apply econometrical models and conduct statistical analyses. Furthermore, Antonia worked as a data analyst intern at Randstad and gained practical experience with research on labor market scarcity.

Arjan Heyma

Arjan Heyma is Deputy Director and since 2006 Head of SEO Amsterdam Economics' Labour & Education practice. He is specialised in the combination of microeconometric analyses with policy research. Arjan has a doctorate in Labour Economics and has more than 20 years of experience in the field of labour, education and regional economic developments. His research and advisory tasks are primarily aimed at the functioning of the labour market and education market and the relationship between these two. Besides offering policy advice and leading (complex and multidisciplinary) research projects in these areas, he is also involved with (econometric) analyses of labour market developments and the effects of labour market policies (e.g. employee insurance, reintegration services, wages, flexible labour, labour migration, schooling and training), economic implications of ageing, mismatches in the labour market, and innovations in and the added value of education. In addition to numerous econometric methods, Arjan also makes use of qualitative research techniques including focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and observations to be able to support effect evaluations with realistic evaluations in order to better explain why effects appear. This way, tools for policies can be more easily identified. For the valuation of effects and policy alternatives, Arjan makes use of Social Cost-Benefit Analyses (SCBA), among other methods, an instrument for which, in the past years, he has been involved with the development of several guidelines. Arjan studied Econometrics and Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. In 2001, he was awarded a PhD for his thesis ‘Dynamic Models of Labour Force Retirement', which was based on research carried out at the Centre for Economic Research on Retirement and Ageing (CERRA, Leiden University) and a short stay at Yale University. Arjan was researcher and project manager at TNO Inro from 1998 to 2001, where he carried out research into issues including regional labour market developments, transport conduct, transport mode choices and road pricing. His scientific articles have been published in international journals such as the Journal of Applied Econometrics, the Journal of Population Economics, and the International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health.

Arnout Jongeling

Arnout Jongeling is part of the team ‘Competition, aviation and innovation' at SEO Amsterdam Economics. Arnout has been working at SEO since October 2019. He is specialized in air connectivity analysis, benchmarking airport charges and economic impact studies. Arnout strengthens the team ‘Competition, aviation and innovation' with his knowledge of empirical research methods. He has experience with analyzing cross-section data, time series and panel data. Arnout participated in a diverse range of projects. For the European Commission he investigated the economic developments of the EU air transport market. On behalf of ACI he studied the connectivity of European airports. Arnout studied economics and law at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. As part of his economics study he followed the master Policy Economics. In the master thesis that he has written to complete this master he has researched the effectiveness of non-financial incentives in university education. In this thesis Arnout made use of a ‘regression discontinuity design'. Arnout also followed the master constitutional and administrative law. As part of this master he has written a thesis about the influence of King Willem III on governmental policy.

Astrid Lensink

Astrid is a researcher in the Finance, Governance and Regulation cluster. She joined SEO Economic Research in August 2021. Her main research areas cover financial markets, regulation, housing market, and the level and structure of executive compensation. She has also conducted research in the areas of agriculture, climate and VAT exemption. Her expertise is in data analysis and surveys. She also has extensive experience with desk research, literature studies, experiments and interviews. Before Astrid joined SEO, after completing her Bachelor's degree in Economics and Policy at Wageningen University and Research, she completed two Master's degrees at VU University Amsterdam: Economics and Econometrics. She completed the master's degree in Economics cum laude. In her master's thesis Economics, she examined the effects of monetary policy shocks on productivity growth in the US. She wrote this thesis at the Dutch central bank (DNB). One year later she wrote her second thesis at Triodos Investment Management. There she mapped the role of institutions on companies' sustainable development goals (SDG) scores.

Bas Greefhorst

Benjamin van Casteren

Benjamin van Casteren is a researcher for the cluster Health & Social Policy. Benjamin obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in econometrics at the University of Amsterdam, where he was a tutorial teacher since his second year. He is proficient with numerous econometric techniques and statistical programming languages. During his studies, he specialised in microeconometrics. To write his master's thesis, Benjamin completed an internship at SEO. During his internship, he estimated the effects of paternity leave on the earnings gap between mothers and fathers. He also evaluated the Dutch parental leave system and formulated a policy recommendation.

Carl Koopmans

Carl Koopmans is Research Director at SEO Amsterdam Economics and Professor of Economics at VU University Amsterdam. Carl, specialised in social cost-benefit analyses (SCBA), is one of the Netherlands' leading experts in this field. He is co-author of several Dutch SCBA guidelines. Carl makes use of his SCBA knowledge in many policy areas: for example, he carried out research into the costs of power failures and the benefits of the World Cup Football, and analysed road pricing and the housing market. He also carried out impact analysis in many fields. Carl joined SEO Amsterdam Economics in 2002. He was Director of the Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis (KiM) from 2006 to 2007 and professor at the University of Amsterdam from 2002 to 2009. He was previously Head of the Transport and Energy departments at the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, and project coordinator for the Scientific Council for Government Policy, where he carried out research into energy, environment and decision-making in large infrastructure projects. Carl was awarded his PhD for a thesis on informal labour in 1989. He studied econometrics at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Charlotte Jenniskens-Linders

Charlotte Jenniskens-Linders has been working at SEO Economic Research since October 2019 as a quality coordinator. She is involved in the further development, management and implementation of the managementsystem in accordance with ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 27001 (information security). She also fulfills the role of privacy officer and supports colleagues with issues concerning the AVG. After studying business economics at Tilburg University, she worked as a researcher at a market research agency for a number of years. She then went on to work as a quality manager and was responsible for setting up, managing and implementing the management system and associated ISO certifications. Charlotte was also responsible for supporting colleagues in compliance with the GDPR. At an IT service provider in healthcare, Charlotte contributed to optimizing the Information Security Management System and was responsible for the internal audit for ISO 27001 and NEN 7510. She was also responsible for developing a risk management framework and reporting for ISAE 3402 (assurance standard for outsourcing).

Christiaan Behrens

Christiaan Behrens is senior project manager at SEO Amsterdam Economics and is specialised in aviation and competition economics. He also holds a professorship at Nyenrode Business Universiteit. Christiaan has over fifteen years of experience in quantitative and qualitative research in the areas of competition economics, marketing, and consumer behaviour. Christiaan uses this experience at SEO to analyse a variety of economic questions, such as the definition of the relevant market, quantifying market power and abuse thereof, the quantification of economic damage, and the economic conduct in aviation markets. Christiaan joined SEO Amsterdam Economics in early 2017. He is an experienced researcher and project leader in the Competition, Aviation & Innovation team of SEO and is responsible for several large-scale competition cases and aviation studies. Examples include determining economic damage due to the abuse of market power and identifying the economic consequences of tenders in various sectors. His research often involves innovative markets, products, or services, such as the platform economy. He regularly publishes in scientific journals and professional literature on transport economics, with a focus on aviation topics. For example, he has published papers on the relevant market for airports in Europe, competition between high-speed trains and airlines, and the effect of (national) loyalty on competition in the aviation industry. He is affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit, department of Spatial Economics, as visiting fellow and teaches microeconomics, public sector economics, and transport economics. In his dissertation he studies the relationship between competition, marketing, and consumer behaviour in the transport sector. He is specialised in analysing and quantifying the competition in imperfect markets using various advanced econometric tools.

Claudio Corte Coi

Claudio is a researcher in SEO's Global Economics team, where he focuses on international macroeconomic research and evaluations of international development programmes. In his work at SEO, Claudio implements state-of-the-art qualitative and quantitative research methods to applied economic research questions and evaluations. Among other topics, he has been assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of macroeconomic policy reforms; subsidies and minimum prices; and capacity development programs conducted by the IMF and the World Bank. Before joining SEO, Claudio spent a year at the European Central Bank, where he analysed the effects of non-conventional monetary policy instruments introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic on the lending behaviour of euro area banks. He also previously worked as business analyst for various FinTech and manufacturing companies in Europe. Claudio holds a master's degree in Economics with a specialisation in International and Macroeconomic Policy from VU University Amsterdam. In addition, he holds a master's degree in Physics from the University of Bologna (Italy).

Daniel Pritsch

Daniel Pritsch is a junior researcher in the Education cluster. He uses state-of-the-art research methods to retrieve causal effects, for example through policy evaluations. Daniel completed his master's degree in Policy Economics at Erasmus University cum laude in 2022. Before that, he studied Economics and Business Economics. For his master's thesis, he investigated the effect of air pollution on learning outcomes, using modern causal research methods. While completing his master's degree, he also worked for SEO as a student assistant, allowing him to already gain experience in practical research. As a junior researcher at SEO he studies the long-term effects of interventions for gifted students in primary education, and the effects of vocational education tracks spanning both secondary and post-secondary education.

Daniël van Vuuren

Daniël van Vuuren is head of the group Social Security at SEO Amsterdam Economics. He is also a professor of Social Security and Economics at Tilburg University. Daniël has 25 years of experience in applied economic research, with an emphasis on social security, the labour market, and pensions. Before joining SEO, Daniël worked primarily at the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, amongst others as head of the sectors Public Finance (2018-2019) and Labor, Education and Pensions (2014-2017) and as head of the Social Security unit (2008-2013). At CPB he was responsible for, among other things, macroeconomic forecasts, ex ante policy evaluations at the request of ministries and parliament and many studies. He conducted his own research into subjects such as early retirement, hidden unemployment in disability insurance, self-employment, part-time pension, and the Generation Pact. Daniël studied econometrics at the VU University Amsterdam (1993-1997) and obtained his PhD at the same university (1998-2002) with a thesis on the pricing of passenger rail transport. In addition to his work at SEO and Tilburg University, Daniël also is a board member of the KVS (Royal Society for Economics), fellow of Netspar and editor of the scientific journal Work, Ageing, and Retirement.

Debbie Keijser

Debbie Keijser is a researcher at SEO's Global Economics cluster. She specialises in applied macroeconomics, international trade, and evaluations of economic development programmes. Her experience with the latter focuses on inclusive private sector development; capacity development for micro, small and medium enterprises; and agricultural value chains in developing countries. She contributed to evaluations of FMO-MASSIF and its capacity development fund, B-CD (2020), and 2SCALE (‘Toward Sustainable Clusters in Agribusiness through Learning and Entrepreneurship'). In addition, Debbie frequently contributes to the development of M&E frameworks , including the design of Theories of Change, SMART indicators, and monitoring tools. In her work at SEO, Debbie implements both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The first include economic data analysis, portfolio reviews and survey data analysis. With regards to qualitative methods, she has experience implementing contribution analysis, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and structured surveys. Before joining SEO, Debbie worked as a consultant at First Consulting. During her master's in International Economics at the University of Amsterdam, she researched the effect of the composition of development aid on the tax revenue of recipient countries. In addition to her background in economics, Debbie has a strong affinity with languages: she speaks English, Spanish, and French. Additionally, she studied Mandarin Chinese in Beijing.

Derck Stäbler

Derck Stäbler is researcher in the Finance, Regulation and Governance team at SEO Amsterdam Economics. His focus is on applied economic (policy) research and market analysis. Before Derck joined SEO, he worked as a senior policy officer at the Dutch ministry of Finance. He worked on several topics, including the housing market, fiscal policy, innovation policy, the corona support measures and aviation. Also, he co-wrote the Budget Memorandum (Miljoenennota). Derck has a double degree master in Economics and Economic Analysis from the University of Groningen and Universidad de Chile. Emina van den Berg

Emina van den Berg is an experienced researcher in all fields of education, from primary and secondary to higher education. She has extensive expertise in efficiently collecting information from education establishments and students through surveys and interviews. She uses this information in (quantitative) monitors and effect evaluations for various clients, including the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). Her expertise is not least focused on the process for these surveys. She is very competent at developing, programming, conducting, and analysing surveys among various target groups, and at revising and thoroughly studying the results of these surveys. To this end, she makes use of econometric analyses and tests, combined with a critical eye and an attitude aimed at solutions. Within the field of education, Emina has researched several themes. Some of the issues she has dealt with recently include school costs, accessibility of education, and the effects of a master's programme for teachers. What she likes most about her work with SEO, is the diversity of issues she deals with and being able to contribute to policy developments with her research. She always strives for the highest level of instructiveness in the presentation of her results. Emina graduated in General Economics at the VU Amsterdam in 2005. During her study she developed a passion for quantitative methods and techniques, which she applied to her graduation thesis on developing economics. After graduation she worked for nearly two years for the independent evaluation department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Policy and Operations Evaluation Department (IOB), where she was involved in the impact evaluations of primary education in Uganda and Zambia.

Erik Brouwer

Erik Brouwer is the head of the Competition, Aviation and Innovation group within SEO Amsterdam Economics and holds a professorship at Nyenrode Business University. With over 30 years of experience as a scientist, policy researcher, and advisor, Erik is a leading expert in competition, innovation, and the economic implications of violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Erik's approach in his work involves objectifying and rationalizing client choices by unravelling and isolating the main effects, utilizing his extensive knowledge in econometrics, Big Data Science, and economic theory. As a professor, he focuses on (sustainable) innovation, competition, and measuring broad prosperity. He is affiliated with the Expertise Center Accounting at Nyenrode Business University. His career encompasses leadership roles in numerous research assignments and advisory trajectories for diverse clients, including companies, consultancy firms, lawyers, industry organizations, regulators, and (local) governments both in the Netherlands and internationally. His experience extends to applied economic research and advisory work. Erik completed his study in econometrics at the University of Amsterdam, where he obtained his doctorate in 1997 with his thesis "Into Innovation: determinants and indicators". His career includes key SEO Economic Research, Dialogic, PwC, and LeasePlan positions. Erik has held a wide range of leadership and specialized positions in these roles, ranging from Director of Deals and Risk Management to an expert in competition and the economic consequences of GDPR violations. Since 2017, Erik has been leading the competition, aviation, and innovation cluster at SEO Economic Research. Additionally, he is an active member of the ACM Academic Council and contributes to scientific journals and professional literature, mainly on innovation, competition, media, and pricing issues.

Ferrie Boer

Ferrie Boer joined SEO Amsterdam Economics as an Accountant in November 2014. After his education in Business Economics at HES Amsterdam, he has worked in various financial positions, including at The Dutch Central Bank. In the past 13 years he worked as an Accountant at a car importer. At SEO he works together with Joan Hoogland maintaining all financial records, including payroll and personnel.

Gerben de Jong

Gerben de Jong holds a doctorate in (business) economics and is up-to-date with the latest scientific insights in the areas of economics and management. At SEO he uses this knowledge to analyse complex economic issues and translate them into directly applicable insights for clients in the public and private sector. His expertise lies in the fields of competition economics, regulation, innovation and sustainability. In this broad area, he conducts policy evaluations for a variety of Dutch ministries and other (international) governmental bodies, is involved in analysing competition cases for regulators and law firms and monitors the state of innovation and the business climate in the Netherlands. Gerben is an expert in combining advanced econometric models with applied economic theory. He has extensive experience in working with large (micro)datasets such as those available at Statistics Netherlands (CBS), as well as with analysing novel data collected by means of, among others, (dynamic) questionnaires, controlled experiments and web scraping. In addition to his work at SEO, Gerben is affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His academic research focusses on improving the industrial organisation of aviation markets taking into account the behaviour of travellers and airlines and the often (conflicting) economic, ecological and social interests. He obtained his PhD in 2019 and won a prestigious NWO Rubicon grant for his academic work in 2020. This allowed him to spent a period of 18 months at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem - a leading institute in the field of economics. Since early 2023, he is back in the Netherlands to apply the acquired knowledge in (policy) research again.

Harriët Prins

Harriët Prins is a junior researcher within the Education cluster at SEO Amsterdam Economics. Harriët studied economics and law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. During her studies she has studied in Sweden for several months, at Örebro University and Umeå University. She followed the master International Economics, during which she wrote her master thesis on different techniques for measuring multidimensional poverty and on the effectiveness of a new method to decompose multidimensional poverty to establish the impact of different factors on multidimensional poverty. For her law studies, she followed the master Constitutional and Administrative Law at Leiden University. For her master thesis, she conducted research on the enforceability of duties of care in environmental law.

Henri Bussink

Henri Bussink is a senior researcher in the field of education and the labor market issues and the intersection between them. His expertise lies primarily in conducting applied economic (policy) research. Since 2018, Henri has been working at SEO Amsterdam Economics within the Labor cluster. In recent years, he has contributed to a wide range of projects (both as a researcher and as a project manager) for various clients (including several ministries, sector and employer organizations, and the European Commission). His main research areas include the link between education and the labor market, (international) labor mobility, sustainable employability, lifelong development and social security. Henri is knowledgeable in and experienced with quantitative research methods for evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of policies (monitoring and policy evaluations). Additionally, he has experience with analyzing administrative microdata from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and collecting and analyzing survey data. He also has experience mapping the financial consequences of policy (forecasts), potential behavioral effects of policy (vignette analyses) and the social value of policy (social cost-benefit analyses). He also regularly uses qualitative research methods, such as literature and synthesis studies (including policy reviews), in-depth interviews, and focus groups. In 2018, Henri obtained master's degrees in Policy Economics and International Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam. During these master's programs, he specialized in micro-econometric analyses and policy evaluations. He also pursued specializations in public finances, international financial markets, and quantitative macroeconomics. Iris Klinker

Iris Klinker has been working at SEO Amsterdam Economics since October 2020. She started as a student assistant and has been a junior researcher at the Labor cluster since September 2021. In 2020, Iris completed her bachelor's degree in econometrics at the University of Amsterdam. During her bachelor's program, she spent five months in Shanghai studying at Fudan University, where she took master courses on the Chinese economy. Her bachelor's thesis focused on gender inequality in starting wages and wage growth. After her bachelor's degree, Iris pursued a master's degree in econometrics with a specialization in Data Analytics at the University of Amsterdam. She wrote her master's thesis on the effects of paternity leave on the labor market position of mothers at SEO. Within SEO, Iris primarily focusses on data analysis and policy evaluations in the field of the labor market. As an econometrician, she has extensive knowledge of various quantitative research techniques. Her main research areas are the labor market tightness, flexible employment, and the transition from education to the labor market.

Jeroen Content joined SEO in 2023 as a researcher within the Competition, Aviation and Innovation cluster. He has extensive experience in conducting economic research on the topics of regional development, entrepreneurship, well-being and innovation. Before joining SEO, Jeroen worked as a scientific researcher at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, where he conducted research on well-being within the Netherlands. Prior to that, Jeroen conducted PhD research at Utrecht University on the topics of regional economic development and entrepreneurship. As a researcher, Jeroen has particular expertise in quantitative (econometric) research methods and data issues.

Joan Hoogland

Joan Hoogland joined SEO Amsterdam Economics in 2001. She began in a dual position as secretary/accountant. She has concentrated exclusively on the accounts since mid-2004.Joan's previous work experience includes the position of office manager for a stand construction organisation. Joeri Athmer is a junior researcher within the cluster Health & Social Policy. Joeri is an econometrician and especially engages in quantitative analysis. Before he started at SEO, he worked as quantitative researcher at Significant APE. During this period he amongst others researched causes for the disadvantage of unemployment insurance benefits recipients with a non-western migration background and the effect of the cost-sharing standard on sharing living space. In addition, he was involved in the maintenance of the GGZ-regional model. Joeri got his bachelor's degree Econometrics & Operations Research at Tilburg University and his master's degree Econometrics at Universiteit van Amsterdam. Within his master he specialized in Complexity and Economic Behaviour. He wrote his master thesis at Statistics Netherlands.

Joost Witteman

Joost Witteman is a senior project manager at SEO Amsterdam Economics. His expertise is mainly in the fields of public finance and taxation, capital market regulation and corporate governance, and (international) macroeconomics. Joost works for a range of clients, including the Dutch government, international organizations such as the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund, and the business community. Joost also coordinates SEO's contribution to the Dutch Network of National Security Analysts and is periodically seconded to various Dutch ministries. Joost directs complex research projects. Many of these projects draw on both quantitative and qualitative research methods. He also has extensive experience in providing capacity building in various countries, both within and outside of Europe. Joost studied history and economics at the University of Amsterdam. During his studies he specialized in monetary policy and banking.

Justus van Kesteren

Justus van Kesteren is a researcher for the Labour & Education practice. He has experience with econometric techniques to analyse panel-, time series- and cross-sectional data, systematic literature reviews and conducting surveys and interviews. Justus completed the master's programs Economic Policy (Utrecht University) and Economics and Governance (Leiden University) with distinction. During his studies, he worked as an editor at Economische Statistische Berichten (ESB) and as intern at the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB). He also wrote his master at CPB about the effect of the increase in flexible employment on the aggregated wage growth. This thesis was awarded with the U.S.E. Thesis Award 2017-2018. After his graduation, Justus worked as BoFEB-trainee at the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Kim van Berkel

Kim van Berkel works as a researcher in the Social Security group at SEO Amsterdam Economics. Her research focuses on the evaluation of policies that relate to social security and the labour market. Currently, Kim is also studying for her Master's degree in Policy Economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, where she has previously completed a Master's degree in Econometrics (2022, cum laude). She obtained her Bachelor's degree from Amsterdam University College (2019, summa cum laude). In the past, Kim worked as a researcher at the Applied University of Amsterdam, where she was part of the research team of the Amsterdam Experiment with Welfare, a study into different types of guidance for welfare recipients in Amsterdam. During her Econometrics studies, she also interned at the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, where she studied the causal labour market effects of the Tozo support for self-employed individuals during the COVID-19 crisis.

Koen Steenks

In 2018, Koen started the bachelor Public Administration and Organizational Science at the University of Utrecht. In addition to his bachelor, he worked as a student-assistant at USBO Advies and started as a junior researcher at Datawerkplaats. At Datawerkplaats, he is researching how the Digital Twin can be used for civic participation. After obtaining his bachelor's degree cum laude, he started the master Economic Policy in Utrecht. The focus on quantitative research within this master complements the qualitative skills from his bachelor. This master reinforced his interest in labour economics. Currently, he is doing a research internship at SEO, researching the effects of the (youth) minimum wage on inequality. In addition, he also works as a student-assistant on several projects.

Koen van der Ven

Koen van der Ven is an all-round senior researcher on educational issues. His expertise lies mainly in empirical evaluations, using micro-econometric techniques and administrative datasets. Within the Education cluster, Koen strengthens the research team with his knowledge of econometric and statistical research methods such as fixed effects models, regression discontinuity design, instrumental variables, and difference-in-differences models. He has experience in working with large administrative microdata files from CBS (Statistics Netherlands). Additionally, he frequently develops, programs, and analyzes surveys and enjoys engaging with stakeholders to enrich his research. He is skilled in managing multidisciplinary teams and enjoys leading a research project. Topics that Koen primarily focuses on include the transition from education to the labor market, equal opportunities in education, and macro-efficiency. He is knowledgeable about all education sectors, from primary education to academic education. Recent research revolves around newcomers (such as Ukrainian refugees) in education, the (challenging) transition to the labor market for vocational education students with a migration background, the teacher shortage, and the impact of COVID-19 on young people. He also conducts research in other areas, such as cultural topics (evaluation of the Museumkaart) and labor market issues. After completing his Bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Administration at the University of Amsterdam cum laude, Koen completed the Master's degree in Policy Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam. In October 2017, he defended his master thesis titled "The long-term effects of early tracking" which is about the long-term effects of the transition from primary to secondary school. He wrote this thesis at the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB), where he also worked before joining SEO.
