Mr Ben Hornung

Mr Hornung is a Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary, a tertiary referral centre and one of the UK's leading NHS trusts. After qualifying in 2003 and completing his basic surgical training in Yorkshire, he undertook a period of clinical research at University Hospital South Manchester investigating the pathophysiology of pelvic floor pathology. He then completed his higher surgical training in the northwest, gaining expertise in general and colorectal surgery at all the major tertiary centres. Mr Hornung has a specialist interest in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery and undertook a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Yorkshire prior to taking up his consultant post. He is the Clinical Lead for Colorectal Cancer at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Mr Hornung has published widely and presented at both national and international meetings. He is actively involved in research and recruits patients to a number of national multicentre clinical trials. Mr Hornung delivers patient centred care, building a relationship based on trust and clear communication. He offers best surgical management founded on evidence based practice for general and colorectal surgical conditions including haemorrhoids, anal fissure/fistula, pilonidal sinus, hernias, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit, inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disease, diverticular disease and bowel cancer. Away from work Mr Hornung enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his family. He enjoys most sports, particularly tennis and rugby and helps out coaching his son's junior rugby team on a Sunday. Paul is a consultant general surgeon with a specialist interest in UGI surgery at Manchester Foundation Trust. He was appointed in 2017. He graduated from The University of Leeds and subsequently trained in Yorkshire, where he attained an MD in "1H NMR spectrometric identification of biomarkers in renal transplantation". He moved to Manchester for higher surgical training and then spent a period of time in The Netherlands. Paul has over 30 publications and has presented his work nationally and internationally. Within his current consultant role he is general surgical lead clinician for the national emergency laparotomy audit and lead for frailty within general surgery where he is heading up an NHS England pilot study for care of patients undergoing abdominal operations with underlying co-morbidities. He takes an active role in undergraduate teaching.

Prof Aali Sheen qualified in medicine from the University of Dundee in 1993. Mr Sheen became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1998 (FRCS), obtaining a Doctorate in 2003 from the University of Manchester (M.D.) followed by his final specialist fellowship from the Intercollegiate board in General Surgery in 2005 (FRCS Gen Surg). Prof Sheen undertook training in General Surgery in London, Oxford and Manchester following which he undertook specialised HepatoPancreato-Biliary (Liver, Pancreas and Gallbladder) training in both Manchester and Leeds. He also undertook specialist hernia surgery training in Sweden. Prof Sheen's main clinical interests are diseases of the Liver, Pancreas, Gallbladder and Bile duct as well as gastrointestinal tract. Prof Sheen has expertise in advanced laparoscopic ‘keyhole' surgery and mainly undertakes procedures for the treatment of gallstones and cancers of both the Liver and Pancreas. Prof Sheen was appointed a Consultant General Surgeon in December 2005 at Manchester Royal Infirmary and has to date, undertaken over 1000 laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedures for gallstones and in approximately of 650 major cancer procedures involving the Liver and Pancreas with 70% of his cancer operations now being undertaken via the keyhole technique. Prof Sheen has both national and international recognition for his expertise and is regularly invited to speak on his research both in Europe and the United States.
