IOM's recent entry into the United Nations, 19 September 2016 and thus the need to integrate its migration capacities into the UN so that the UN System leverages IOM's migration competencies in a predictable manner, much the same way that the UN System turns to UNDP on development, UNHCR on refugees or UNICEF on children... The UN now has a new migration mandate acquired at the UN Global Compact for Migration (GCM) Conference on 11-12 Dec 2018, in Marrakesh, Morocco to specifically support: (a) GCM implementation, (b) GCM review and follow up, and (c) the roll-out of UN capacity building mechanisms;... UN has tasked IOM to be the coordinator of the UN Network on Migration and to provide secretariat support. As the coordinator, IOM is expected to collaborate closely with other UN agencies that have a direct role on migration, making IOM responsible but also accountable to the UN.
