Catia G. Saraiva

Job Titles:
  • Associate
  • Partner
Ms. Saraiva has handled hundreds of complex cases to successful completion and obtained multiple seven-figure results for her clients. She began her legal career working full-time at Dreyer Babich Buccola Wood Campora as a law clerk during the day while attending McGeorge School of Law's evening program. In 2004, Ms. Saraiva graduated from McGeorge School of Law, ranking number two in her class and earning Order of the Coif membership, awarded to only the top 10 percent of students at recognized law schools. She was one of only two candidates selected as a 2004 Judicial Extern to a United States Federal District Court judge. Ms. Saraiva has devoted her legal career to exclusively representing injured victims. Her mission is to work on behalf of the most vulnerable members of our society who often have no one to champion them. In 2010, Ms. Saraiva was nominated for Attorney of the Year by CAOC (Consumer Attorneys of California) for her work in the Linville v. PSI, Inc. case where, with Mr. Buccola, she represented the heirs of a dependent adult patient (under the California Elder Abuse & Dependent Adult Laws) who died days after her admission into a Sacramento acute-care hospital due to use of an unsafe restraint. As a condition to settlement, the hospital had to change its policies and training practices in several key areas of patient neglect uncovered during the case. In 2011, Ms. Saraiva earned a second Attorney of the Year nomination and a Woman Trial Lawyer of the Year nomination for her work in the trial of Parken v. Smart-Vasquez, where she obtained a $3.6 million verdict (with Mr. Greenblatt) in a rear-end collision case. In 2013, Ms. Saraiva once again received a Woman Trial Lawyer of the Year nomination. Along with Steve Campora, she represented the Botell Family in Botell v. United States, arguing the management of Lassen National Park was to blame for the death of Tommy, age 9, and injury to sister Katrina, age 13, during a family vacation. The government denied all liability, but the court struck the government's defense and sanctioned the United States for destroying evidence in the case. Rather than face arguments regarding the superintendent's failure to comply with mandatory park policies, the United States settled shortly before trial for a substantial amount. In 2018, Ms. Saraiva co-tried a case against Comcast on behalf of a young man who was struck by a Comcast van while riding his motorcycle. The case went to trial after the last offer from the defense of $300,000 was rejected. At trial, the issue of the plaintiff's lower back injuries was in question. Comcast emphasized the fact that no low back complaints were documented in the ambulance and hospital records on the day of the accident, although Comcast conceded the accident did cause some lower back injury, albeit less than the plaintiff claimed. Additionally, the defense surgeon pointed to prior automobile accidents in 2007 and 2008 as causally related to the degeneration seen on the plaintiff's MRIs. The defense doctor opined that the plaintiff's congenitally narrow spinal canal-a condition that ran in the plaintiff's family-was also a contributory factor unrelated to the accident. After an eight-day trial, the jury returned a verdict of $1.069 million. With an expired CCP 998 Offer, Comcast was forced to pay an additional $328,000 in interest and recoverable costs, bringing the total recovery to over $1.39 million. Ms. Saraiva is Distinguished peer-review rated* through Martindale-Hubbell®. In 2012, Ms. Saraiva earned membership selection into The National Trial Lawyers: Top 40 under 40 for individuals who exemplify superior qualifications, trial results, and leadership. Ms. Saraiva was selected as a Super Lawyers® Rising Star from 2010 through 2015. This recognition is bestowed on less than 2.5 percent of all attorneys. In 2016, Ms. Saraiva was first selected to Northern California Super Lawyers® along with less than 5% of her peers; she was again selected in 2017-2019. She has been recognized by San Francisco Magazine as one of Northern California's Outstanding Young Lawyers and selected by Top Attorneys-Sacramento's Outstanding Young Lawyers. In 2013 and 2014, Ms. Saraiva was recognized as one of the Top Women Attorneys in Northern California by San Francisco Magazine, which names attorneys who have received the highest point totals based on peer review, professional achievement, and the independent research of Law & Politics magazine. In 2013, Ms. Saraiva was selected as one of 14 inaugural class members for the 2014 New Leaders Council-CAOC Legal Institute which worked to recruit and train Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC) members for future leadership roles in the CAOC, professional settings and communities. As part of the 2014 NLC class, Ms. Saraiva joined one of over 600 nationwide NLC Fellows who have gone on to become leaders and luminaries in their professions. After emigrating from her native Portugal as a child, Ms. Saraiva grew up in a working-class neighborhood of South Sacramento, attending Christian Brothers High School, where she competed in volleyball and softball. She is proud of her roots and remains fluent in Portuguese, as well as Spanish. Ms. Saraiva is active in her community through various organizations and volunteer work to better our Sacramento community.

Hank G. Greenblatt

Job Titles:
  • Partner
Mr. Greenblatt spent the first 10 years of his career (from 1989 to 1999) as an insurance defense attorney representing insurance companies and their insureds. This gave him a unique insight into the litigation process and the way insurers evaluate and adjust injury claims. Mr. Greenblatt focused on first-party (uninsured motorist) claims, premises liability defense and investigation of suspected fraudulent claims for insurance company special investigation units. In 1999, he joined our team at Dreyer Babich Buccola Wood Campora. Since, he has achieved (many with his partner Mr. Buccola) over 12 $1-million-plus results for his clients.

Jason J. Sigel

Job Titles:
  • Associate
  • Partner
Jason J. Sigel is a partner with Dreyer Babich Buccola Wood Campora, LLP. His practice is devoted exclusively to litigating on behalf of people injured through the negligence of others or by defective products. In acknowledgment of his zealous and successful advocacy on behalf of his clients, Jason has been selected for inclusion as a Rising Star by Northern California Super Lawyers in 2010 and 2012-2015. This recognition is bestowed on less than 2.5 percent of all attorneys. While still an associate at DBBWC, Mr. Sigel, along with his partner Hank G. Greenblatt, was named Capitol City Trial Lawyers Association Advocate of the Year in recognition of his record personal injury verdict in Amador County. Mr. Sigel is the only attorney in the history of the firm to obtain this prestigious recognition as an associate. He fought on behalf of his client for more than four years before the case ultimately went to trial in September 2014 after the defendant's insurance company refused to pay the $250,000 policy limits despite the fact the plaintiff underwent cervical disk replacement surgery. After a two week trial, the jury returned a record $3.7 million verdict, the largest personal injury verdict ever obtained in Amador County. Following an appeal after the trial, which Mr. Sigel briefed and argued in the Third District Court of Appeals, the case settled for $4.2 million. Mr. Sigel's other trial victories include a $2.9 million verdict on behalf of a young woman rear-ended by a commercial vehicle. The case went to trial after the last offer from the defense of $350,000 was rejected. The jury awarded the plaintiff more than $1 million for past and future medical care and an additional $1.9 million for past and future pain and suffering. Mr. Buccola, Mr. Campora and Mr. Sigel obtained a wrongful death verdict of more than $2.4 million in the case of Jacobs v. Sacramento Regional Transit. The verdict came nearly five years after Mrs. Jacobs was killed by a left-turning bus at the intersection of 8th Street and Q Street in downtown Sacramento. Liability was hotly contested throughout the trial with RT's lawyers contending that Mrs. Jacobs was jay walking at the time of the accident. As a result of the extensive forensic testimony put on at trial by the plaintiffs, the jury sided with the Jacobs family when they determined that Mrs. Jacobs was struck and killed while in the crosswalk. Mr. Buccola and Mr. Sigel also obtained a record wrongful death verdict and settlement in the case of Barber v. Mossy Ford, Inc. The gross verdict totaled $14,465,864 with another $8.3 million recovered in pre-trial settlements from other defendants. The combined verdict and settlement is the largest wrongful death compensatory damage recovery in the history of San Diego County. The case involved a negligent tire repair by a Ford dealership that caused a tread belt separation that claimed the lives of Casey and Melanie Barber. The Barbers were survived by their three young sons. As a condition of the settlement reached after the verdict was rendered against Mossy Ford, the dealership agreed to bring its tire repair training practices up to industry standards so that a tragedy like this cannot happen again. Mr. Sigel is particularly proud of the settlement he and Mr. Buccola obtained in Dickson v. Heavenly Valley, a wrongful death case in which a husband was thrown to his death from a chairlift in August 2009 while visiting Heavenly on his honeymoon. The case was litigated for four years during which more than 125 depositions were taken in an effort to uncover the truth about the safety failures that led to Mr. Dickson's death. Before agreeing to settle the case, Mr. Buccola and Mr. Sigel fought to ensure that Heavenly would make several crucial improvements to safety practices on the mountain so that a preventable calamity like this cannot happen again. As a result of their aggressive advocacy, Heavenly agreed to make those changes as a condition of the settlement. Mr. Sigel's success extends beyond the trial court to the appellate level. He has participated in a number appellate cases, several of which have resulted in published opinions, including Lane v. City of Sacramento (2010) 183 Cal.App.4th 1337, which clarifies and limits the grounds on which a governmental entity can defend premises liability claims and ensures citizens across California get their day in court if they are injured by a dangerous condition of public property. In addition to representing clients in trial and on appeal, Mr. Sigel has published and presented papers related to automobile defect litigation at engineering and legal meetings across the country including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Association for Justice, Attorneys Information Exchange Group, and Consumer Attorneys of California.

Joseph J. Babich

Job Titles:
  • Partner
Joseph Babich knows that the personal injury cases he takes on are often like David taking on Goliath, but instead of using a slingshot against his adversaries, Babich draws upon his deep well of professional experience, his native intelligence and his ability to form connections with people-whether they are clients or members of a jury. His success can be measured not just by the outstanding verdicts he has won for his clients but also by the recognition from his peers in the legal profession who have given him the top ratings possible for both his legal skills and ethics, including a "Lawyer of the Year" award in Sacramento in 2013, 2018 and again in 2024. Babich has represented thousands of individuals and families during his 43-year legal career. The wisdom born of experience has taught him what works and what doesn't, and he has obtained multimillion-dollar verdicts for clients who have suffered injuries or loss. He knows courtroom theatrics don't win the day; rather, it is the human connection made with clients and with juries that brings about the best outcomes. In one recent case, he represented a woman who had the misfortune of driving on a bridge in Sacramento when a counterweight collapsed, crushing the front end of her car and causing serious injuries. The woman, a mother of four young children who was also a late-stage cancer patient, had not been expected to live more than a few years before the accident. After it, those final years would be filled with additional pain and suffering. Traditionally, actuarial charts that look at earnings based on life expectancy are used to calculate awards but Babich, who himself is the father of four children, knew how critically important the woman's final years would be to her and her family. "I just put myself in her position. I was trying the case not only for her, but for her kids," Babich explained. The challenge in that case was to argue that pain and suffering damages based on her limited life expectancy with cancer didn't tell the whole story. To convey the depth of her loss, he introduced at trial photographs of the woman coaching her children's sports teams to show her active role in their lives just before the accident. The jury got it. He added, "I was very pleased with what the jury awarded her." Today's juries are tightening up on pain and suffering awards, principally due to several notorious cases that have been retold so often they are far removed from the facts and more in the realm of urban myth. Faced with such challenges, Babich believes being a good listener helps him get to know his clients in order to create for a jury a genuine picture of what each person's loss truly is. Being an astute observer also helps guide him. "Some lawyers don't like to look at the jury when they're trying the case. I am the opposite," Babich said. "I try to watch the jury; I try to get some signals from them." Babich employs the same degree of hard work and dedication in his professional life as he does in his private life. He took up running several years ago and embraced the sport by completing nine marathons in four years. Just as in the courtroom, with running there is what he calls a "real discipline and structure to training, and there's a real sense of accomplishment." Babich, a Sacramento native whose father was a Superior Court Judge, recognizes not everyone has had the benefits he has had in pursuing a legal career. To that end, he created a scholarship endowment for minority students at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a BA in economics, and another at Sacramento's McGeorge School of Law, where his son earned his law degree. "I really enjoy helping people and counseling them. When I was a deputy district attorney, my client was the State of California, so I didn't really have an attorney-client relationship. That's why I went into private practice," he said Helping people in need and treating them with respect, regardless of their circumstances, are values instilled in him by his parents. They are values that motivate him to fight hard for his clients. "I would say that 95 percent of the clients that come through my door don't have the means to pay us on an hourly basis," he said. "When people are not represented, claims representatives will take advantage of them and offer them a lot less than they clearly deserve." His respect for people extends to members of a jury, about whom he says, "collectively, they are brilliant. You are not going to pull the wool over their eyes. In addition to being named Lawyer of the Year in 2013, 2018 and 2024 by Best Lawyers®, a group consisting of his peers in the legal profession, Babich holds the highest rating (AV Preeminent®) through Martindale-Hubbell®*. Babich also has served as president of the Sacramento Consumer Attorneys and was honored as Advocate of the Year for his outstanding trial results in 2003.

During that time he worked for both large corporations as well as small businesses, and worked in all areas of the restaurant from host to server to bartender to manager, as well as occasionally helping out with the kitchen. Working in various positions in restaurants has helped him to understand appropriate standards of care in premises liability cases. While attending McGeorge School of Law, Mr. Jones took every specialty class available in Trial Advocacy, including a three week long summer seminar in Advanced Trial Advocacy. The balance of his education through law school with the simultaneous on-the-job training provided by Mr. Dreyer and Mr. Bale aided him in advancing his litigation skills rapidly before even passing the bar exam. Ultimately, Mr. Jones graduated a semester early from law school and passed the bar exam on his first try. He was immediately thrown into the fire by taking dozens of depositions on highly publicized cases. Mr. Jones has tried multiple cases with Mr. Bale, and continues to work with Mr. Dreyer and Mr. Bale on numerous cases, while also handling his own share of cases throughout all stages of litigation. As an attorney, Mr. Jones has resolved hundreds of cases for his clients whether that be through trial or negotiation. He has assisted in the continuing education of his peers with regards to California Lien Laws, ERISA liens, and Medicare/Medi-Cal lien statutes. Mr. Jones is licensed to practice law in California in both state and federal court.
