Michelle Smith (formerly Pennies) was born and raised in El Paso. After high school, she attended the University of North Texas in Denton where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. She went on to attend law school in Miami, Florida before ultimately settling down in San Antonio, Texas and receiving her Doctor of Jurisprudence from St. Mary's University School of Law.
