Alfonso joined SME's Marietta, Georgia, office in 2022 as a civil and environmental engineer with experience in supporting a range of site development projects, from early-stage planning through construction. He has expertise in performing due diligence investigations; creating grading plans for water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater networks; and creating erosion and sedimentation control plans to mitigate the effects of land disturbing activities during construction.
Alfonso is a graduate of the University of Michigan with dual bachelor's degrees in civil engineering and environmental engineering. In college, he was vice president of the campus chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Outside of work, Alfonso is an outdoor enthusiast, an avid traveler, and a huge fan of soccer!

Andrew has over 15 years of experience in the geology field. He specializes in groundwater flow modeling, subsurface wastewater disposal system design, and geologic and hydrogeologic investigations for water resource development, characterization of landfill and remediation sites, and permitting of quarries and borrow pits.
He is a graduate of Boston College with a bachelor's degree in Geology and a master's degree in Geology and Geophysics.

Anthony joined SME in 2020 as an Environmental Engineer and assists clients through his work as part of the firm's Environmental Compliance group. He has six years of engineering and technical experience in environmental compliance and remediation, with specialized expertise in the oil and gas industry. Anthony's professional background includes conducting groundwater and air sampling activities; subcontractor oversight of monitoring well installations; chemical injections and vacuum remediation events; and the operation and maintenance of systems for sparge/soil vapor extraction, groundwater pump and treatment, and active product recovery.
He is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.
Anthony and his wife recently relocated to Maine where they look forward to camping and hiking. Anthony also enjoys weightlifting, Italian cooking, and hockey.

Brandon joined SME in 2022 with experience in civil and environmental engineering, design, permitting, and construction oversight for public and private projects across northern New England.
He has proven expertise in the design of stormwater management systems and municipal water/sewer works, and in performing hydrological and hydraulic modeling for highway/roadway, coastal, and marine engineering projects.
Brandon is a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono with a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
He enjoys being active with bodybuilding, motorsports, snowboarding, hiking, fishing, camping, and hunting. He also is active in his community through volunteering and coaching.
Brian has more than 25 years of experience in project management, design and construction oversight of civil and environmental engineering projects. He is responsible for both the technical and supervisory aspects of projects, including client regulatory agency relations, detailed design, permitting, construction, and operations for civil and environmental projects. Brian also serves as the company's Chief Engineer in charge of internal project review prior to distribution to clients and regulators.
He has a bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Maine and is a Professional Engineer in Maine, Massachusetts, Arizona, Ohio, and Maryland. Brian is an active member of ASCE and an active board member in the Northern New England Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).
Brian enjoys spending time with his family and being on the water fishing. Brian has been active in his community as a coach and athletic booster.
Brian joined SME in 2000. As an environmental technician, he works in the field sampling air, water, and sediments. He received a degree in Environmental Science from Unity College.
Brian has a passion for the outdoors and enjoys hunting, fishing, and skiing.

Bruce leads SME's Water Resources team, tapping his 40-plus years of experience in all aspects of water resources exploration, development, permitting, sustainable yield assessment, well redevelopment, aquifer storage and recovery, and management. His extensive career portfolio includes major projects for public, industrial, and agricultural clients across the U.S., including the country's largest water utility.
Bruce's substantial hydrogeological expertise, experience, and innovative thought led to the patented invention of the Packer-Purge System™ (U.S. Patent No. 11,021,937), a highly cost-effective technology for relief well development and restoration. He has a bachelor's degree in Geology from Boston University and a master's degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Vermont.

Chris joined SME's Phoenix, Arizona office in 2019 to support our firm's expansion in the southwestern U.S.
As a Senior Industrial Hygienist, Chris consults with clients to provide professional services that focus on protecting and enhancing the health and safety of people in workplaces, schools, hospitals, and other public places.
Chris has over 20 years of experience in environmental, industrial hygiene, and construction consulting, including oversight of inspection and abatement activities for asbestos, lead, and mold at large commercial, military, and industrial sites throughout the country.
Chris has performed and overseen numerous complex environmental projects and has served as an expert witness on several asbestos legal cases and regulatory hearings.
He is a Cal-OSHA Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) in California and is approved by the U.S. EPA and Cal-OSHA for course instruction and certification of asbestos professionals. He also serves on the Board of Directors and is the Immediate Past President of the Environmental Information Association (EIA).
Chris has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Northern Arizona University.
In his free time, Chris enjoys spending time with his family, being outdoors, hiking, mountain biking, camping and playing guitar. He is also a licensed private pilot.

Dan is vice president of SME and leads the firm's Civil Engineering team. He has more than 19 years of experience on a wide variety of civil engineering design and construction management projects for private and public sector clients. He has experience in engineering, design, and construction services for land development projects, commercial and medical site developments, educational campuses, stormwater management and erosion control projects, and local, state, and federal permitting.
Dan received a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine, Orono, and is LEED AP BD+C certified in sustainable building design and construction. He is also certified by the Maine Department of Transportation as a Local Project Administrator.
Dan is president of the Maine Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies and is an active member in a number of other professional organizations, such as the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Association of Watershed & Stormwater Professionals.
He lives in New Gloucester with his wife Meghan and two children and enjoys exploring the outdoors with friends and family.

Darren joined the SME Civil Engineering staff in 2020. His professional experience includes construction oversight, cost estimate analysis, quality assurance testing, and other engineering-related work.
Darren graduated from the University of Maine-Orono with a B.S. in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Water Resources.
In his free time, Darren enjoys camping, hiking, and watching sports.

Dave has been with SME since 1988. He started his career in the field, collecting water and soil samples and performing various types of field chemistry.

Erik leads SME's Remediation group. He is an expert geologist with 28 years of experience in geologic investigations, specializing in hydrogeology, geochemistry, sediment transport, and geotechnical issues. He has supervised and conducted regional and international research projects for the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Geological Survey, and some of the region's largest manufacturing companies. Erik is a member of the E2Tech board of directors with a passion for clean energy topics.
He received bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees in Geology from the University of Vermont.
Erik is an avid off-piste skier, mountain biker, brewer, and lover of live music. Erik currently spends much of his free time in a support role to his teenage children.

Eve joined SME in 2020 as a Project Accounts Assistant, providing financial administrative support to SME's accounting team. Eve is an experienced accounts specialist with outstanding operations and interpersonal and communications skills.
She previously worked in account administration and client relations for a large international organization, and lived and worked in the Netherlands.
Eve is a graduate of Smith College.

Herb has over 30 years of experience in Information Technology supporting environmental and civil engineering projects. In addition to design and administration of information infrastructure, he also designs, codes, and implements technical software solutions for business and engineering solutions. His experience includes designing solutions for both in-house operations and SME clients.
Herb has a bachelor's degree from the University of Lowell.
Herb is active in local government as a selectman on Chebeague Island and is a musician who plays at venues up and down the coast of Maine.

Jace has over 15 years of experience in the handling of petroleum and hazardous materials. He manages all facets of long-term monitoring related to the release of petroleum and/or hazardous waste, and assists in the design and implementation of remediation systems. His work includes the preparation of work plans, site safety plans, budgeting, contracting, technical review, conducting and supervising field activities, report writing, and contact with regulatory personnel.

Jason makes sure SME clients keep pace with complex and ever-changing environmental regulations. He is involved in all aspects of environmental compliance programs, such as performing environmental management system audits, conducting training, drafting regulatory manuals and plans, and completing environmental reporting.
Jason is a graduate of St. Lawrence University with bachelor's degrees in Biology and Environmental Studies.
Maintaining clean water is critical to one of Jason's hobbies - it is an essential ingredient in the beer he homebrews.
Jenna works on a variety of assignments primarily in civil design and engineering, stormwater management, and permitting. She is a 2019 graduate of the University of Maine, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a concentration in Water Resources Engineering. Jenna has experience in a range of civil, geotechnical, and hydrological engineering projects in which she has gained expertise in subsurface investigations, stormwater systems, and roadway design and construction.
Jenna is qualified by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection as a Site Location of Development (Site Law) Third-Party Inspector.
In her free time, Jenna enjoys playing tennis, running, yoga, and rollerblading.
Jennifer has over 20 years of experience in office administration and business management. Her work at SME includes billing administration, high-level project support, document review, and HR assistance. She also has experience with event planning and a knack for managing growth.
She has a bachelor's degree in political science from Tufts University.
Jennifer is an active dressage horse trainer and competitive rider. She also enjoys photography, boating, and spending time outside doing just about anything.

Jiayuan ("JY-yan") joined SME's Product Stewardship team in 2021 and is based in the greater Chicago area.
She is an innovative and analytical leader with 16 years of professional experience supporting international clients with research, testing, scientific justification, and problem-solving to meet product regulatory compliance. She is an experienced, organized, and methodical project manager with extensive knowledge of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and global regulatory requirements relevant to the food and pharmaceutical industries.
Jiayuan's work at SME focuses on understanding each client's specific challenges and developing high-quality, practical solutions that combine advanced science with common sense. Her professional background encompasses in-depth expertise and experience in analytical laboratory testing and methodology for product safety, regulatory compliance, and Good Manufacturing Practices as relate throughout food and beverage, dietary supplement, and cosmetics supply chains.
Jiayuan holds a master's degree in Pharmacognosy (Natural Products Chemistry) from the University of Rhode Island and a bachelor's degree in Chinese Pharmacology from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
She is fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese. In her free time, she enjoys reading, listening to music, hiking, and bicycling.
Joel is an OSHA-certified safety specialist with more than 20 years of experience in occupational health and safety and industrial hygiene in construction and industrial environments. He is responsible for project management, site planning, hazardous building materials inspection and sampling, abatement design specifications, oversight of hazardous material abatement, bid and construction services, permitting, document preparation, and public presentations for a wide variety of consulting assignments for commercial, industrial, healthcare, and residential clients. Joel has specialized training in addressing asbestos, mold, bacteria, and other areas of concern.
Joel is a retired U.S. Air Force veteran with 20 years of service. He has a B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University.
Joel is an outdoor sports enthusiast whose hobbies include surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, as well as motorcycle and UTV riding with family and friends.
Joel joined SME's CAD team in 2012. As a civil drafter/designer, he produces drawings, volume calculations, and figures for a wide range of projects, such as site development, subdivisions, private roads, landfills, and solar array installations. Joel has expertise with a variety of design software, including AutoCAD, Carlson, and ArcGIS. He also produces topographic and site surveys, and conducts tests in SME's Geotechnical and Soils Testing Laboratory.
Joel has an associate degree in Architectural and Civil Engineering from Central Maine Community College.
He enjoys being outdoors camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, playing disc golf, and spending time with his wife and two sons.

John joined SME's subsidiary, Environmental Safety & Health Associates (ESHA), in 2020, bringing over 35 years of experience in the Industrial Hygiene and Health and Safety field. He performs Indoor Air Quality and Industrial Hygiene investigations for residential, commercial, and industrial sites, as well as hospitals and governmental facilities.
John has extensive expertise in OSHA regulatory requirements, asbestos surveys, hazard recognition, hazardous material labeling, emergency response procedures, and contamination control techniques. He also has education and experience related to mechanical engineering and drafting; architectural design and drafting; general building construction; metallurgy; health and safety; and industrial hygiene assessment and sampling.
While employed previously by the Department of Defense, John was a registered emergency responder with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).
Outside of work, John enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking and entertaining, gardening, hiking/biking, attending sporting events, exploring the U.S. and the world, and being "Pop Pop" to his grandson.

Originally from Missouri, Justin recently relocated to Maine. He spends his free time golfing, playing music, and cooking.
Kaitlyn joined SME in 2022. She is a solutions-oriented Industrial Hygienist experienced in providing health and safety-related site inspections, investigations, and reporting in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. She is knowledgeable in state and federal regulatory requirements, particularly as related to indoor air quality assessments, chemical monitoring, AHERA asbestos surveys, monitoring, abatement, mold inspections and assessments, personal exposure monitoring, lead testing, noise surveys, and other assessments.
Kaitlyn's professional background includes a number of years in direct client relations, and she is skilled at communicating clearly on complex matters such as regulatory requirements or data interpretation which adds value to the client-consultant relationship.
Kaitlyn enjoys outdoors adventures with her family and keeps especially busy with a toddler son. Among her favorite activities are camping, learning to grow a garden, concerts, and summer days on Peaks Island.

Bob brings over 45 years of experience in industrial process and environmental chemistry to SME, which forms the basis for his environmental regulatory compliance and permitting practice. His experience also includes implementation of environmental management systems, site characterization and remediation, database development and data management, and health and safety consulting. He manages environmental affairs for numerous manufacturing facilities, nationwide.
He is a graduate of Tufts University with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
In the rare event that he is not helping clients improve their compliance status, he enjoys sailing and motorcycling. He also serves as Secretary for the Saco Coastal Waters Commission.
