John Harris

Job Titles:
  • Staff Field Engineer at VMware
Hi! My name is John and I'm a Staff Field Engineer @ VMware where I work with customers to help design and implement Kubernetes solutions, in addition to contributing back to upstream open source projects. I've always been interested in technology and after a 5-year stint as a semi-professional basketball coach in England, I stumbled into a role as an instructor for various DevOps / Continuous Delivery tools. When container technology started gaining interest, I joined Docker to lead the West Region Technical Account Management team. While at Docker, I helped design and implement container strategy and tooling for some of their largest customers and spoke at DockerCon SF in 2018. Eventually, I wanted to be more hands-on with Kubernetes and the upstream open source community. That led me to VMware (via the Heptio acquisition) where I now focus primarily on Kubernetes and associated CNCF projects to help customers make the transition to a cloud native world. Outside of work I love to follow most Boston sports (go Celtics!) and am active in the Seattle tech community. I co-lead DevOps & Linux Meetup groups and volunteer as an industry mentor for ADA Developers Academy. I tweet at @johnharris85 so please come and say hello!

Jonathan Smith

Job Titles:
  • Instructor
  • Director in VMware 's Cloud Native Field Engineering and Education
  • Instructor at VMware
My path to technology took a circuitous route-I started my career working in a microbiology lab. Eventually, I enjoyed the time spent learning how to analyze our data and share with the world via the Internet more than lab work (and was drawn to the much faster results). So, I jumped into technology by completing a Master's in Information Security & Privacy, and joined The Vanguard Group as a software engineer. I spent most of my early career in technology as a software engineer at Vanguard, then as a software consultant at a boutique consultancy, developing large-scale applications for the Enterprise. After an acquisition by Red Hat, I led teams helping our customers implement middleware solutions and build applications to support their businesses. After a foray building the West Coast arm of a boutique consultancy, I arrived at VMware (via the Heptio acquisition) where I manage teams responsible for delivering solutions to customers on the Kubernetes platform. Eitan is an instructor who joined VMware via the acquisition of Pivotal. In this capacity, Eitan has delivered training on the Tanzu Application Service (TAS), on Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition (TKGI), and on Platform Automation with Concourse. Prior to VMware, Eitan was a Principal Consultant at ThoughtWorks, where he had the opportunity to lead teams and assist enterprise customers with delivering software, with automated software testing, and with agile transformations. Eitan has many years experience as a software developer, and spent four seasons as a speaker on the No Fluff Just Stuff conference tour. Eitan's first open source project dates back to 2002 when he developed a database-backed Java API documentation system, which achieved some measure of notoriety after being written up on java.sun.com and later adopted by dzone.com.
