Dr. Rong Wang

Job Titles:
  • Director
  • Professor of Surgery / Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
Rong Wang, Ph.D. is Professor of Surgery and Director of the Wang Lab. Previously, Dr. Wang had the distinction of being a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Michael Bishop, MD, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Chancellor of UCSF. Dr. Wang's team is engaged in state-of-the-art research involving key proteins necessary for blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) and arterial growth (arteriogenesis). They have found that the Notch 4 protein can cause dramatic blood vessel enlargement in adult animals and that the protein called focal adhesion kinase is essential for maintaining existing blood vessel structure. The ability to encourage the growth of blood vessels can increase healing in traumatic wounds, promote recovery from strokes and heart attacks, or generate the growth of new pathways around blocked arteries in the lower limbs to reduce the potential of gangrene and possible amputation. Rong Wang, Ph.D., Professor of Surgery and Director of the Wang Lab, has been invited to speak at the The American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP) 2016 symposium on the topic of "Angiogenesis in Organ Development and Function." The ASIP 2016 Annual Meeting will be held April 2-6, 2016, in conjunction with Experimental Biology 2016 at the San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, CA. The Program Committee has assembled a vibrant scientific program encompassing diverse topics relevant [...] Rong Wang, Ph.D., Professor of Surgery and Director of the Wang Lab, was invited to give a plenary speech at the 11th HHT International Scientific & Medical Conference in Captiva Island, Florida on June 11-14, 2015. The 2015 meeting brought together the world's leading HHT experts in both basic research as [...] Rong Wang, Ph.D., Professor of Surgery and Mildred V. Strouss Endowed Chair in Vascular Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), gave the keynote address at the 2014 commencement ceremony at San Francisco State University (SFSU). Dr. Timothy A.M. Chuter

Job Titles:
  • Presented SVS Medal for Innovation in
  • Professor Emeritus of Surgery / Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
  • Vascular Surgeon
Timothy A. M. Chuter, M.D. studied medicine at the University of Nottingham, England. He then moved to New York and worked as an assistant professor of anatomy at Columbia University. His first-ever publication was the head, neck, and upper extremity chapters of an anatomy textbook. He was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time when a computer glitch left the Columbia-Presbyterian general surgery program one intern short, thus starting his journey. In 1990, upon completing general surgery residency, Dr. Chuter moved to Rochester, New York for fellowship training in critical care and vascular surgery. His planned career as a general/vascular surgeon in a rural New England town took a different direction when he started to explore a few original ideas concerning the potential role of endovascular intervention as an alternative to maximally invasive surgery. These experiments were initially funded by Dr. Chuter's nighttime employment in local emergency rooms. Promising results attracted financial support and engineering help from Cook, Inc., a manufacturer of catheters, wires, and stents. The excitement generated by these early successes was enough to precipitate Dr. Chuter into a career focused on innovation, clinical application of new techniques, publication, and further innovation, all at a frenetic pace. Dr. Chuter completed his vascular fellowship and went back to Columbia-Presbyterian as an assistant professor of surgery in 1993. The first clinical implantations of a bifurcated stent graft took place in late 1993 at selected centers in Australia and Europe. In 1995, Dr. Chuter left New York to work in Sweden as an associate professor of interventional radiology at Lund University. In 1996, Dr. Chuter was recruited to UCSF as the director of the newly formed endovascular program. The other founding faculty member was Linda M. Reilly, MD, FACS, renown for her numerous contributions in the field. Dr. Timothy A.M. Chuter was presented the Society for Vascular Surgery Medal for Innovation in Vascular Surgery at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery on June 6, 2008. Dr. Chuter has been a leading developer of the technology utilized in endovascular treatment of vascular disease for over 20 years. The medal recognizes individuals whose contribution has had a transforming impact on the practice or science of vascular surgery.

Ronald J. Stoney

Job Titles:
  • Emeritus Professor
  • President of the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Professor Emeritus of Surgery / Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery / Co - Founder and Chief Medical Officer
Ronald J. Stoney, M.D. is emeritus professor of surgery at UCSF, where he was associated with Drs. Jack Wylie and Bill Ehrenfeld in the practice of vascular surgery for over three decades. Dr. Stoney joined the UCSF faculty as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1966, was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 1973, and then to full Professor in 1980. Dr. Stoney retired in 2000 and was named Emeritus Professor of Surgery. Dr. Stoney has served as president of the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, North American Chapter, and the Western Vascular Society. A little more than 25 years ago, Dr. Stoney took a three-month sabbatical leave from his high pressure operating schedule at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and traveled to Australia to teach surgical techniques at the University of New South Wales medical school. By the time he returned, he had dramatically altered the landscape of vascular medicine. Inspired by something he saw in an Australian hospital, Dr. Stoney perfected a now patented self-retaining surgical retractable system to improve efficiencies in the operating room. But more importantly, he made the bold decision to try to put vascular surgeons, himself included, out of business. "It's the dream all dedicated doctors have, really," explains Dr.Stoney. "If you're serious about medicine and helping people, ideally you want to find cures or ways to prevent people from having the conditions that ultimately require surgery." In 1982, he co-founded VascularCures - The Foundation for Accelerated Vascular Research (formerly known as the Pacific Vascular Research Foundation) to improve patient care and prevent death and disablity from vascular disease. Dr. Stoney has received numerous awards, including the Society of Vascular Surgery's Lifetime Achievement Award. He has lectured around the world, has published more than 100 book chapters and more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, and authored and co-authored more than a half dozen books and manuals on vascular medicine.
