David V. Hicks

Mr. Hicks attended Princeton University and after taking his A.B. there, read for an M.A. at Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and on the staff of the U.S. Naval War College, and has been the headmaster of several prominent independent schools, including St. Mark's in Texas, St. Paul's in New Hampshire, and Darlington School in Georgia. His book on K-12 education, Norms & Nobility, won the American Library Association's award as the outstanding book on education in 1981 and has been frequently reprinted. Scribner published his and his brother's new translation of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, entitled The Emperor's Handbook. Mr. Hicks also served as chief academic officer for the Meritas Family of Schools from 2006-15. He lives with his wife in rural Montana.

Prof. Nuno Crato

Prof. Crato was awarded by the President of the Republic with the Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction, the highest degree of this Order. Nuno Crato is Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Lisbon and current President of Iniciativa Educação, a nonprofit organization for fostering student qualification. His academic research focus on stochastic models with applications on economic and social problems, and statistical data-based evaluation of policy measures. He has published extensively on econometrics and statistical journals and worked on education policy analysis, namely on PISA and TIMSS country analyses. Education and Science Minister of Portugal from 2011 to 2015, took office as an independent minister after a scientific and educational career. He obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and worked as a college professor and researcher in the US before returning to Portugal. Has served as a dean at the Technical University of Lisbon and president of Taguspark, the largest science and technology park in Portugal. A prolific writer, his most recent books are his co-organized Data-Driven Policy Impact Evaluation (Springer 2019) and his recently edited Improving a Country's Education: PISA 2018 Results in 10 Countries (Springer 2021). He has been consulting for education policy groups and think tanks. He is founding organizer of Lisbon Economics and Statistics of Education. Prof. Crato was decorated in 2008 with the degree of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, after two European awards for scientific writing, one from the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and the other from the European Commission, and in 2016 with the Grand Cross of the same Order, the highest awarded to a national citizen in that Order. Prof. Crato is advising the TASIS Portugal board pro bono. His start with the school was as a judge for our inaugural TASIS Speaks event, and an interesting fact: he is friends with E.D. Hirsch, the creator of the Core Knowledge curriculum we use at TASIS Portugal!

Tony Davis

Vincenzo Campanale

Vincenzo Campanale has a master's degree in engineering and an MBA from the Polytechnic of Milan. Before joining TASIS in November 2015 as TASIS Group financial director, Vincenzo had a successful, multifaceted career as CFO and general manager for Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA), an academic preparation program, and worked in numerous roles with the Boston Consulting Group, Microsoft, and Swisscom. At TASIS, Vincenzo has developed the financial director function, supporting the TASIS Foundation in the definition of the long-term group financial strategy, managing the financial priorities of the Group, and developing new financial processes and reporting systems to support the schools, including supporting the launch of TASIS Portugal.
