Abigail McClain

Biography Abigail McClain is a secondary Special Educator at Achievement First Providence Academy Middle School, a public charter school. She began her career in education as a 2021 Teach For America Rhode Island corps member. Abigail is a passionate educator and advocate who is deeply committed to equitable access to education for all learners. During her first year teaching, leading both math and English intervention classes, Abigail prioritized an adaptive and asset-based approach to instruction while simultaneously maintaining rigor and challenge. She creates academic environments that support the varying learning needs of students by incorporating student choice into all aspects of her teaching. She believes students are best supported when they are at the center of their school experience. While at Brown and beyond, Abigail plans to focus her studies and work on implementing inclusive, culturally-responsive, trauma-informed, and asset-based approaches to support neurodivergent learners. Abigail received her education at Fordham University in New York City with a B.A. in English and Art History. She also holds a Master's of Education from Rhode Island College. She is eager to begin this new journey by working towards her second master's degree in Urban Education Policy while continuing her work as a teacher. Abigail believes for equitable change to occur at the systemic level, the belief and pursuit for equity must persist at the most fundamental level of teachers and students. Therefore, she is honored to work towards this goal as an Urban Education Fellow at Brown University and as a teacher in Providence, Rhode Island.

Alea Rubin Evens

Alea Rubin Evens is originally from Chicago, IL, and is a part of the MAT science cohort. She recently graduated from Georgetown University with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Education, Inquiry, and Justice. During college, she spent time in D.C. Public Schools science classrooms, serving in both tutoring and teaching assistant roles. Additionally, she worked as a program specialist for the Pivotal Network, a professional learning network for teachers of first-generation and lower-income students. Alea is passionate about facilitating science learning that is culturally sustaining and integrates local communities. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, trying new restaurants with friends, and watching movies.

Amanda Li

Amanda Li (she/her) recently graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in Chemistry and Education Studies and is now part of the MAT science cohort. During college, she worked as a tutor at Hope High School in a special education classroom, and in past summers, she has worked with middle and high school students as a summer school teacher in her hometown, New York City. Besides her passion for teaching, Amanda also loves reading, finding cool origami designs, video calling with her family, and learning new idioms. Upon graduating from the MAT program, she hopes to use what she has learned to teach chemistry in an accessible and culturally responsive way.

Amy volunteers with Brown Elementary After school Mentoring (BEAM) and spent the past summer assistant teaching at Nah Ah Shing Schools in Minnesota. Amy hopes to become a high school biology teacher at low-income schools.

Ayanna Tafe

Ayanna Tafe graduated from Brown University in 2023, with a degree in Comparative Literature with honors, with a focus on the translation of Latin and French literature. Prior to Brown, she matriculated through the Providence Public School system and is a proud graduate of Classical High School. While an undergraduate student, she was a teaching assistant in a Providence elementary bilingual classroom as a Bonner Community Fellow. During her senior year, she studied abroad at the Sorbonne in their Comparative Literature department. She is passionate about teaching, language learning, and how the intersection of culture and language can be integrated into the classroom to create equitable spaces for students from varying socio-economic backgrounds. She hopes to use her language skills to become an English or a world language teacher. Outside of academia, she enjoys playing the flute, drinking coffee, and making Pinterest boards. Celenah Watson (she/her) is a graduate student at Brown University, pursuing her Master of Arts in Teaching in Social Studies. Celenah was born in Detroit, MI, but grew up in Hackensack, NJ, where she attended local public elementary and middle schools. As an undergraduate at Brown University, Celenah assisted with her professors' research on racial disparities in school discipline, ways in which educators can improve student learning and retention in STEM classes, and on school/classroom interventions targeted toward student academic achievement. She spent her final semester at Brown volunteering with a bilingual classroom of 3rd graders at William D'Abate Elementary, a public school in Providence, RI. With her MAT, Celenah is looking forward to being a Social Studies teacher for middle and/or high school students in Providence Public Schools. David Rangel is a sociologist of education. He studies the relationship between education and social inequality, with emphasis on the Latinx experience in the United States. Diane Silva Pimentel

Diane Silva Pimentel's career has focused on secondary science education, but she works towards creating educational settings that support the growth and success of all students. She began this work as a classroom teacher and continues this work now working with pre-service and in-service teachers. As the Director of the Brown Master of Arts in Teaching program, Silva Pimentel's goal has been to develop a program that prepares our graduate students to meet the multifaceted responsibilities of the teaching profession in a way that positively impacts their students and communities. Specifically in science education, her main interests focus on supporting the participation and persistence of underrepresented students in STEM. She accomplishes this by serving as a faculty member in teacher preparation, creating professional development opportunities for science teachers that support the implementation of reform-based and culturally responsive teaching approaches, and with her scholarly contributions to the field.

Doré Young has wanted to be a teacher since 8th grade. This ambition prompted her to use high school as job shadowing and teach at MESD Outdoor School in Oregon, where she sang silly songs and unearthed many earthworms. She was later crowned a Portland Rose Princess and received the Friends of Outdoor School scholarship. At Colorado College, she was the Student Body President, won the Exceptional Engagement in Diversity and Inclusion Award, and totally fell in love with chemistry. Doré is excited to show students that pouring from containers to other containers (one of our most primal human instincts) can serve as a way to a brighter future. Along with being a scientist, she is a choreographer excited to expand her creative horizon Eastward. After completing the MAT program, Doré will stay in Rhode Island as an Urban Education Fellow.

Elliana Reynolds (she/hers) is currently pursuing her MAT in Social Studies at Brown University. Originally from Zion, Illinois, she previously graduated from Brown with two bachelor's degrees: History and Education Studies. During her time there, she volunteered at local schools as a mentor to younger students, conducted early American research, wrote in student publications, and passionately participated in an activist group dedicated to promoting student equity in Providence and at Brown. In her day-to-day life, she enjoys reading, writing short stories, watching period pieces, and discussing and putting into action intersectional feminism. While in and after graduating from the MAT program, Elliana is excited to be a social studies educator rooted in values of social justice, critical thinking, curiosity, empowerment, joy, and community.

Emily Greenberg graduated with her Bachelor's degree in English and Education from Brown University in 2019. She taught fourth grade in Nampa, Idaho where she became especially curious about how teacher education programs often recreate systems of violence and how teacher training can be a disruptive and liberatory practice. She currently lives in Providence, Rhode Island, and works in higher education administration. Outside of work, Emily is writing two novels for children inspired by her visions of education beyond the traditional classroom. Emily Kalejs Qazilbash is a Professor of Practice in Education at Brown University. Dr. Qazilbash most recently served as Chief Human Capital Officer in the Boston Public Schools. After beginning her career as a teacher in Baltimore and Boston, she conducted research focused on issues of teacher quality and worked on issues such as educator evaluation, teachers unions, school reform efforts, and Peer Assistance and Review (PAR) programs. Emily Plummer is from San Diego, California, and moved to Providence during the summer of 2022. She is an elementary school teacher in Central Falls, Rhode Island, and will teach throughout her studies at Brown. Emily became interested in education policy while studying international relations and political science at Simmons University in Boston, Massachusetts. She was able to immerse herself in local politics through various internships at the City of Boston, the Mayor's Office of Women's Advancement, the Massachusetts State Treasurer's Office of Economic Empowerment, and the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Emily's interest in educational equity and passion for working with children motivated her to pursue Teach For America as a postgraduate pathway. As a Teach For America Rhode Island 2022 corps member, Emily began her career in education as a 5th-grade science teacher and quickly found her love in advocating for high-quality, rigorous educational experiences for all students. During Emily's first year of teaching, she also pursued her Master's degree in Elementary Education from Rhode Island College. During her meaningful experience as a first-year teacher, Emily saw firsthand the dire need for increased support and allocation of resources in an effort to close the opportunity gap for students who are disproportionately affected. Through the UEP program, Emily hopes to find out answers to the questions she has run into as an educator in Providence and seeks to be an agent for positive change within the educational system at the local level. Ezequias Jagge Teixeira

Biography Originating in a slum called Esqueleto in the city of Duque de Caxias, Brazil, Ezequias embarked on a journey characterized by social impact, personal growth, and an unwavering commitment to anti-racism movements. His path of community engagement started with a course called Social Projects Agent at SENAC when he was a freshman at Polo Educacional SESC High School, where he learned how to plan, organize, and execute impactful projects that ensured access to food and leisure for marginalized communities, laying the foundation for his passion for community involvement. Later, during his studies in Social Sciences and Management and Evaluation of Public Policies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, he showcased his dedication to community well-being and social progress through his long involvement with Coletivo Nuvem Negra. There, he participated in, organized, and led meetings for black and brown student activists focused on proposing concrete actions to promote human rights and anti-racism both within and outside the college. In 2019, he was awarded a full-ride scholarship from Brazil's federal government to study Community Development, Urban Communities, Public Policies, and African-American Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). This transformative experience deepened his dedication to uplifting underprivileged communities. Subsequently, after his time at UIUC, he continued his educational journey as a Sociology Teacher, learning how to develop innovative smart-learning active teaching methodologies and honing his pedagogical skills to engage high school students in both traditional classrooms and remote settings. His unwavering commitment to volunteerism relies on his hope to leave a lasting impact on communities in Rio de Janeiro and beyond. He passionately dedicated his time and expertise to empower underprivileged adolescents, participate in the distribution of essential supplies to thousands of families in need, and promote human rights and progressive political perspectives in marginalized areas through organizations such as Instituto Identidades do Brasil, Nós em Movimento, Rede Cruzada, Junior Achievement, and Coletivo Esperançar. John Papay is an Associate Professor of Education and Economics at Brown University. His research focuses on teacher policy, the economics of education, and teacher labor markets. Through her involvement in the Ronald McNair internship program, Julia conducted research on implicit bias among educators, specifically focusing on school disciplinary disparities. She is driven by her passion for equity and social justice in education. Her work in multiple undergraduate research labs at UofSC centered around race and equity services, allowing her to work on projects related to racial redlining and energy vulnerability. Julia's ultimate ambition is to return to the classroom and teach, and later work for the Federal Department of Education, advocating for policies that address educational disparities and ensure equal opportunities for all students. Her research connects teacher education pedagogy with anti-racist best practices in K-12 schools. Larkin Denlinger

Larkin Denlinger (she/her) was born in Bangalore, India - along with her twin sister! - and moved to the U.S. when she was adopted at the age of one. She grew up in rural New Jersey with a backyard full of pets and a house full of siblings. Larkin attended public schools and then Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She graduated Class of 2022 with a B.A. in Biology and Educational Studies. As an undergraduate, Larkin was involved with Colby Cares About Kids, Colby Outing Club, Colby Outdoor Orientation Trips, tutoring at the local YMCA, and Colby College Billiards Society. These extracurricular activities focused on her passion for creating community and connection, among both youth and her peers. She also completed two Breakthrough Collaborative summers in Manchester, New Hampshire, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Both summers she taught chemistry to traditionally underrepresented middle school students in these urban areas. She also advised and organized club activities during this time. Breakthrough was what solidified Larkin's goal to become a teacher. After graduating, she spent a year as a Science Teaching Fellow at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina where she served in middle school and upper school science classes. Larkin is pursuing an MAT in Secondary Biology Education in hopes of becoming a high school biology teacher and sharing her love of the sciences, particularly botany! Lindsay C. Page

Lindsay C. Page is the Annenberg Associate Professor of Education Policy at Brown University and is a faculty research fellow of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Her work focuses on quantitative methods and their application to questions regarding the effectiveness of educational policies and programs across the pre-school to postsecondary spectrum. Much of her work has involved large-scale experimental or quasi-experimental studies to investigate the causal effects of strategies for improving students' transition to and through college. She is particularly interested in policy efforts to improve college access and success for students who would be first in their families to reach postsecondary education. Outside of teaching, he has worked on political campaigns and with activist groups in Providence. During his time as an undergraduate at Brown, he contributed to student publications as a writer and editor.
