Athenea studied her bachelor's degree in Psychological Counselling through UNISA, which she achieved cum laude. She then went on to complete her Honours degree (cum laude) in psychological counselling through UNISA. Despite the numerous rejections she faced when applying for Masters, she was thankfully accepted into the Master's Programme at University of KwaZulu Natal. She completed her Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, cum laude. She completed her intensive Clinical Psychology Internship at the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, and Groote Schuur Hospital in the Western Cape, and provided a weekly therapeutic service to the Lotus River Community Health Centre.
