Alex Herman is a Patent Engineer with a background in mechanical engineering. Before joining Avek, Alex worked in new product development and certification at a leading entry door manufacturer, where he provided engineering solutions and assistance with 3D modelling, as well as logistics and supply chain support. Elsewhere, Alex assisted in the design and manufacture a low-cost aerodynamic testing apparatus. This included 3D modelling of various components, finite element analysis, aerodynamic analysis, and preparation of technical reports and user manuals. Anna Quinn

Anna Quinn focuses her practice on intellectual property matters and is a member of Avek IP, LLC. As a registered patent attorney, she counsels clients in all areas of patent portfolio management in the U.S. and abroad, including drafting and prosecuting patents covering a wide variety of technologies. Anna has taught Patent Prosecution as an adjunct professor at Washburn University School of Law, and she authors articles on intellectual property legal issues. Beth Felix

Blake E. Vande Garde

Blake E. Vande Garde began practicing law in 2001 after graduating from the University Of Kansas School Of Law. Blake has extensive experience in the preparation and prosecution of biological, mechanical, chemical, battery separator, fuel cell, nanotechnology, textile and fiber patent applications in both the United States and abroad. He also has experience conducting and evaluating due diligence, infringement, freedom to operate, clearance and patentability opinions. Blake also has extensive experience in the preparation and prosecution of trademark applications in both the United States and abroad (in both Madrid Protocol and non-Madrid Protocol jurisdictions). Justin Poplin is a registered patent attorney and a member of Avek IP, LLC. He served as Chair of the Intellectual Property Prosecution & Transactions department in a national law firm from 2013 to 2016, and he was a founding member of Avant Law Group (a predecessor to Avek IP). Companies of all sizes - from large multi-national corporations to startups - rely on Justin's legal advice on patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, licensing, and confidentiality issues. And many clients utilize Justin as outside general counsel because he efficiently prevents and solves problems in ways that minimize disruption to their businesses. He has been the lead patent attorney in litigated matters and has prepared and conducted inter partes reviews, inter partes and ex parte reexaminations, supplemental examinations, and broadening and narrowing reissues. He has aided clients with obtaining, enforcing, licensing, invalidating, and avoiding infringement of patents and trademarks in a wide range of technologies, and he is responsible for managing intellectual property portfolios globally. Justin argued and won some of the earliest inter partes review (IPR) cases, including one case against a large Johnson & Johnson subsidiary and another case representing Munchkin, and his docket has over 75 IPR cases. The Munchkin case is the first case invalidating a design patent through IPR. He has also successfully argued appeals at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Prior to joining Avek IP, Marshall worked in the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) as a patent examiner and then as an associate solicitor. He also previously served as a partner at an Am Law 200 firm. As an examiner, Marshall reviewed and acted on patent applications directed to, among other things, lighting arrangements and devices, computer display light guides, fiber optics, LED arrays, and complex automobile headlamp configurations. As an associate solicitor at the USPTO, he handled lawsuits brought against the Office and acted as a lead attorney in ex parte appeals to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Additionally, he co-managed the section of attorneys responsible for litigating disciplinary actions against patent practitioners. His previous matters include defending the USPTO commissioner as lead briefing attorney in BlackLight Power Inc. v. Rogan, and he also litigated disciplinary complaints against patent practitioners on behalf of the Director of the USPTO Office of Enrollment and Discipline (OED).
