UHAB was founded during the self-help housing movement, and we've witnessed the power of self-reliance in organized residents. We believe housing works best when residents are given the tools and resources to be in control... UHAB is a 50 year old community based organization working for resident-controlled housing across New York City and beyond. Our work spans affordable services for low-income housing co-ops, climate justice, homeownership loans, tenant organizing, co-op development, and advisement and technical assistance to residents and the organizations that serve them across the country... UHAB was created in 1973 during the self-help housing movement. We strive to take the lessons of this vibrant movement-that people can collectively steward their own affordable housing to strengthen their neighborhoods-and organize low-income New Yorkers for democratic community control. People of color have used democratic community control for decades to improve their housing in the face..
