GUINEA PIG CARE AND ADVICE

Guinea pigs utilize FLOOR SPACE rather than vertical space. When the cage is vertical it gives variety in the levels, but what is really needed is floor space that gives them the area they need to exercise, such as zoomies, popcorn, chasing their roommate... Aquariums (and the plastic tote) are not only too small but there are much bigger issues with this. When animals breathe, they inhale oxygen & exhale carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide is HEAVIER than surrounding air…..so it sinks and in a glass tank it stays there as it cannot dissipate. Which means the guinea pig re-inhales the CO2!! We all know what happens to the brain and body when people inhale CO2 -brain damage, organ failure AND death!... Aside from lack of ventilation and CO2 risks, there is a big risk of upper & lower respiratory issues occurring from constant inhalation of ammonia… unless cages are kept scrupulously clean the ammonia from urine & feaces can build up in the cage which is then breathed in by pig.
