Amanda Bird

Job Titles:
  • PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

Amber Gamma

Job Titles:
  • Certified Genetic Counselor
  • GENETIC COUNSELOR
  • GENETIC COUNSELOR / Basking Ridge, NJ
After earning a Bachelor of Science degree with a specialization in Molecular Genetics from the University of Alberta in Canada, Amber enrolled in the graduate program at Sarah Lawrence. Her desire was fueled by a passion for both science and helping others. "The science behind genetics and the translation to human health and reproduction is a huge source of fascination for me, but I wasn't built to do basic research," she says. "I wanted to work with people." After graduating, Amber did just that, working as a certified genetic counselor at Recombine and Northwell Health before joining RMA in 2022. In addition to its focus on research and evidence-based medicine, Amber was impressed by RMA's commitment to launching a genetic counseling program, a rarity among fertility clinics. Her colleagues in the assisted reproductive technology (ART) space inspire her as well. "There are so many bright minds and passionate hearts among us, and I'm always learning from them," she says. Amber is also dedicated to sharing her knowledge with prospective parents. When discussing PGT-A, a genetic test performed on embryos that screen for chromosomal abnormalities, she is always sure to explain its benefits and limitations: While normal PGT-A results increase the chance of having a successful pregnancy, "PGT-A does not test for every genetic condition, and there are things that may come up during pregnancy that are not caused solely by genetics. In addition, PGT-A is a screening test, so we still recommend follow-up screening or testing for the things PGT-A can look for during pregnancy," she says. When not at work, Amber can be found lost in a good book, playing soccer, cooking, or spending time with her fiancé and their sphynx cat.

Andrés Reig

Job Titles:
  • REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST
Andrés Reig, MD, FACOG, is a Reproductive Endocrinologist and Research Faculty at Reproductive Medicine Associates (RMA). Born and raised in Valencia, Spain, Dr. Reig earned his medical degree from the Medical University of Lodz in Poland. He focuses his work on advancing research and performing fertility evaluation and treatment procedures for RMA patients. Coming from five generations of doctors, Dr. Reig was particularly drawn to reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI), as his mother and other family members were REI providers. "That was the initial spark - the idea that ‘normal' people I knew were doing great science that could, quite literally, change the world," says Dr. Reig. After medical school, Dr. Reig moved to the U.S. and worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Yale School of Medicine. He later completed his residency in OBGYN at Bridgeport Hospital - Yale University followed by an REI fellowship with the Jefferson-RMA program. His research interests include low ovarian reserve and poor ovarian response, in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes, and ovarian and embryo biology, and he hosts the FertiliPod podcast and produces the Fertility and Sterility On Air podcast. While Dr. Reig is passionate about advancing the field of REI, he also brings personal experience, as he and his wife turned to RMA to conceive their first child. That's also why joining RMA as a researcher was an easy decision. "When someone is the very best at something, you want to understand why," he says. "After you join RMA, it's immediately obvious: RMA simply cares - absolutely, about everything - to the utmost extent." He is honored to contribute to scientific breakthroughs that help patients all around the world build the family of their dreams. When away from the research lab, Dr. Reig enjoys woodworking, photography, and adventure travel, and he loves any activity on the water. In the future, he is eager to take his children to a Valencia CF soccer game, travel to Morocco with his wife, and sail with his family. Expertise "Experiencing firsthand the incredible changes that have happened over the past 30 years, transforming infertility treatment from a Hail Mary option to almost expecting that it will always work, makes it very real to me that we can actually have a real, profound impact on people's lives through our work."

Angela Q. Leung

Job Titles:
  • REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST
Dr. Angela Leung is a reproductive endocrinologist who helps men, women and couples who want to have a baby, preserve their fertility, or just take care of a reproductive health issue. Her focus, besides helping her patients achieve success, is developing a close relationship with them so they feel safe showing vulnerability, confident asking questions and comfortable investing in their fertility journey. "My goal is to develop a personal relationship with every one of my patents," Dr. Leung said. "To know small things about them, like what they do for work or some detail about their family. I want them to be comfortable asking me questions, because if you don't feel connected with your doctor, or feel judged for asking questions, you won't inquire about the things that matter to you, and that has an impact." Attracted to the east coast as a young woman, Dr. Leung moved from the Midwest to Princeton, New Jersey to pursue her undergraduate degree at Princeton University, where she studied ecology and evolutionary biology, and along with her degree earned a minor in neuroscience. She then headed back to Indiana for medical school, earning her MD at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. It was there that she began to narrow her medical path. At first, the dexterous Dr. Leung (she plays piano and violin) thought she might want to focus on surgery, but as soon as she got a taste of obstetrics and gynecology, she was hooked. "My OB/GYN rotation in medical school was the best experience," Dr. Leung said. "I really enjoyed the relationships I built with patients." Following residency, Dr. Leung strayed in the Boston area to complete her REI fellowship - another three years of training focused specifically on infertility - at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School and Boston IVF. Board-certified in OB/GYN, Dr. Leung has conducted numerous research studies in the field of infertility. She has used single cell sequencing to compare the sperm of fertile and infertile. She's found that prior exposure to hormone therapy in trans men had no effect on the number of eggs retrieved during IVF (their counts were comparable to the egg counts of cis women). And she's studied the question of how many eggs are necessary to achieve multiple live births with one IVF cycle (it's greater than 15). In addition, she's investigated dozens more topics in translational research whose outcomes matter to patients. Expertise Dr. Leung's professional expertise includes egg freezing, with a focus on helping patients understand the process - and their chances of success - better. In 2021, Dr. Leung added an important piece of egg freezing research to the existing scientific literature that addresses the likelihood of achieving a live birth with frozen eggs. Dr. Leung looked at real outcomes of people, aged 34 to 42, who came to Boston IVF to freeze their eggs for elective purposes and then came back later to use those eggs to achieve a pregnancy. While about 1/3 of the patients were successful, Dr. Leung cautioned that a woman's chance of success with previously frozen eggs depends on her age and the number of eggs frozen. Dr. Leung is committed to raising the bar on conversations around egg freezing so women are fully educated on the process and who may benefit.
