Often as a child, I found myself taking things apart. However, I quickly learned from my parents not to select items that were in perfect working order. On the other hand, I could take apart broken items with no problem!... Many activities in business revolve around a similar manner of operation. We typically hear the reframe, "Don't touch what's working!" Resulting in applications and processes getting much needed attention only when it breaks. Through my experience, I learned taking things apart provided deeper understanding. What was its purpose? How can this be done differently? Better? Getting that level of understanding not only generates appreciation, but also sets in motion ideas for innovation.
