The land is located near Shalfleet, Isle of Wight adjacent to Shalfleet waste water treatment works. Shalfleet Treatment works discharges directly into the Caul Bourne River. The Caul Bourne River terminates at Newtown Harbour (designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area and Ramsar) which is in unfavourable condition due to excessive nitrogen... The mitigation scheme will reduce the concentration of nitrogen entering the Caul Bourne River and Newtown Harbour. This will be achieved by constructing a wetland to further purify the Shalfleet water treatment works effluent. Four cells of wetland will be constructed and planted with native wetland species. The removal of nitrogen from the effluent will occur by a process called de-nitrification which releases nitrogen gas into the atmosphere.
