Dr. Subha Arthur

Job Titles:
  • Associate Professor
  • Director / Metabolic and Cellular
Research Interests Dr. Subha Arthur's research interests are broadly focused on understanding the regulation of intestinal ion and nutrient transport processes, with emphasis on their regulation in pathophysiological states such as inflammatory bowel disease and obesity. Her primary research focus as a COBRE ACCORD investigator has been to understand the regulation of increased intestinal bile acid absorption in obesity-associated dyslipidemia by deciphering the signaling pathways and molecular mechanisms involved in the transcriptional regulation of ASBT, the primary transporter of bile acids in the intestine, in Zucker rat model of obesity as well as in a diet induced rat model, both of which are appropriate models to study obesity-associated dyslipidemia. Her research will also explore the novel regulation of ASBT at the level of the caudal-oral length of the intestine as well as along the crypt-villus axis in obesity. Her research will enable better understanding of the regulation of intestinal bile acid absorption in obesity, which may result in novel and efficacious treatment modalities for treatment of obesity-associated dyslipidemia.

Gary O. Rankin

Job Titles:
  • Member of the Chair, Curriculum Committee
  • Member of the Leadership Team
  • Professor & Chair
  • Vice Dean / Chair / Department
Research Interests I was Chair of the Department of Pharmacology from 1986-2005, and when my department was merged with the Department of Physiology, I was made Chair of the combined department, a position I still hold. Over the years, I have mentored numerous undergraduate (26), graduate (40) and medical students (18), postdoctoral fellows (7) and faculty members, both within and outside my department and institution. In addition, I am the principal investigator of the NIH-funded West Virginia IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (WV-INBRE). In this capacity, I oversee a state-wide network composed primarily of new investigators at primarily undergraduate institutions across West Virginia, and serve as mentor for several of them. I have also served as a mentor for COBRE investigators at Marshall University and reviewed COBRE and other IDeA applications for NIH. Thus, I have over 30 years of experience as a mentor in many different capacities. It is also worth noting that my laboratory has been involved in translational research. One of our recent projects involves examining the pharmacogenetics of humans who died from methadone overdose. Working with medical examiner's offices in West Virginia and Kentucky, we have obtained DNA from autopsy blood cards and are examining single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cytochrome P450s (CYPs) related to methadone metabolism as a possible explanation for the overdose deaths and as a predictive tool for preventing methadone overdose in patients taking the drug for addiction treatment or cancer pain. We are also collaborating with Dr. Monica Valentovic, Marshall University, on a project to find adjunctive treatments to prevent cisplatin nephrotoxicity and with Dr. Yi Chen, Alderson Broaddus University, to find natural products that can be used in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Lastly, as part of our work in the field of nephrotoxicity, we have examined the role of renal transporters in the accumulation of the toxicants we are studying.

Richard Egleton

Job Titles:
  • Assistant
  • Assistant Dean
  • Associate Professor
  • Director
Research Interests I have a varied interest in research with four major research areas. These areas all focus on endothelial cell function and tissue barriers. Though my initial studies focused on transport, my current interest is how health care issues common in Appalachia (Diabetes, hypertension substance abuse) regulate brain endothelial function and what role this plays in psychiatric disorders. My studies have been funded via federal grants at both the PPG and RO1 level. This research has resulted in 43 publications with Pubmed IDs, three other research publications, four book chapters, and one book as an editor, as well as numerous abstracts to scientific conferences.
