MORNINGSIDE MONTESSORI ELEMENTARY PRIVATE SCHOOL - Key Persons
Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) is one of the most innovative childhood pedagogues of the 20th Century. She was a pioneer in the field of childhood education and, impressively, her ground-breaking method has survived almost intact for more than a century. The Montessori method is still considered one of the most robust pedagogical systems, with more than 7,000 Montessori schools all over the world. The method's resilience is due to its profound theoretical foundations that includes elements from the fields of pediatrics, child and developmental psychology, pedagogical anthropology as well as philosophy, and to its detailed and vigorous methodology.
Dr. Maria Montessori was the first female to receive a medical degree from the University of Rome (in 1893); she was also a holder of a doctorate degrees in psychology and philosophy, and a professor of anthropology. Maria Montessori was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize (in 1949, 1950, and 1951) for furthering international understanding through her work.
