"I was able to create dentures for my patient after a month. Then, five months later, I called to see how he was doing. He sounded so happy and was able to eat beef jerky again. And the most rewarding part was when he told me he had started dating again - it was gratifying to be a part of his transformation."
One of Dr. Doan's life missions is to give back to others. She spent several years tutoring incarcerated women to help them get their GEDs. "I enjoyed seeing people grow academically, knowing they'll have a better chance of succeeding in the world and didn't have to commit petty crimes just to eat.

Dr. Jeffery Thomas has served patients with his compassionate, gentle approach for over 25 years as a Kihei dentist. He feels fortunate to consider his colleagues his family and his long-time patients his friends. As a young person he experienced first-hand the positive affect of high-quality dental care, and was motivated to pursue a career in dentistry. Prior to joining the Hawaii Family Dental - Kihei team, he earned his DMD from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry.
In 2015, Dr. Thomas was recognized as one of Honolulu Magazine's Best Dentists, lauded for his restorative techniques that protect natural teeth and last for many years. "I don't just take care of teeth," says Dr. Thomas, "I take care of patients." Outside of the practice, Dr. Thomas cherishes time spent with his family, including daughters Elizabeth and Faith. Dr. Jeremy Oakley chose to become a dentist because he believes that working on your oral health is key to developing your best self. One of the things he loves about his job is his patients and becomes invested in his patients' health and well-being.
He also enjoys working with his team to help enhance his patients' quality of life, and it shows. It's why his patients continue to send him letters about their positive experiences.
When he's not providing care to his patients across the state, you can find him on the golf green or surfing. His favorite vacation spots include national parks and Florida to visit family.
Dr. J.D. Westphal is passionate about pediatric dentistry. Though he was scared of dental visits as a child, the more he learned about dentistry, the more interested he became. Today, he channels those early childhood experiences to help his young patients feel more comfortable. When asked what's the best part of his job, Dr. Westphal replied, "There is no better feeling than helping a child overcome their fear of having a procedure done in the dental chair."
Dr. Westphal earned his dental degree at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He then completed his post-doctoral specialty training in pediatric dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. There, Dr. Westphal became skilled in pediatric medicine, sedation, anesthesia, and behavior management. He is also Board Certified.
Dr. Westphal is thrilled to be living on Oahu with his wife Ashley and three boys. He enjoys spending time outdoors and loves mountain biking and hiking. In addition to balancing a full family and professional life, Dr. Westphal makes time to give back to the community. His Spanish-speaking skills helped him provide care during several dental mission trips to Mexico and Honduras. He remains active as a dental volunteer for Mission of Mercy, Give Kids a Smile Day, and the Veterans of War dental clinic.

His journey to becoming a dentist continued in Nebraska where he attended the Creighton University School of Dentistry. Born and raised in Hawaii, Dr. Peter Lee spent over a decade living in different locations around the world including Boston, Omaha, South Korea and Japan. During that time, he volunteered extensively throughout the community for organizations including Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, West Hawaii Community Health Center (Kona), Lanai Community Health Center, Kaiser Hospitals and Shriners Hospital.
Dentistry has always appealed to Dr. Lee, as he realized he could change people's lives for the better by improving their oral health through education and necessary treatments. He gains tremendous satisfaction when he knows he made a difference in a child's life.
Joining the Hawaii Family Dental Centers team was an easy choice for Dr. Lee, as one of his goals was to provide consistent and outstanding care for families across the state. He acknowledges that educating parents and caregivers to help children improve their diet, hygiene, and oral health carries over to better performance in school and extracurricular activities.
Dr. Lee believes in providing patients with the very best dental care possible, and this fact is reflected by the 17 professional awards he has received. These commendations range from Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in Patient and Practice Management Award in 2012 to the 374th Dental Squadron Dentist (Company Grade Officer) of the Year 2015, which was awarded during his active duty time in the U.S. Air Force.
When he is not in the office, Dr. Lee enjoys spending time with his wife and baby daughter and staying physically active by playing basketball and exercising. He loves eating great food and traveling. New Zealand has been one of his favorite travel destinations so far.
