Alex Ruck Keene

Alex Ruck Keene is an experienced barrister, writer and educator. His practice (at 39 Essex Chambers) is focused on mental capacity law (broadly defined). He has appeared in cases involving the Mental Capacity Act 2005 at all levels up to and including the Supreme Court. He also writes extensively in the field, editing and contributing to leading textbooks and (amongst many other publications) the 39 Essex Chambers Mental Capacity Law Newsletter, the ‘bible' for solicitors (and others) working in the area. He is the creator of the website www.mentalcapacitylawandpolicy.org.uk, providing resources and expert commentary on some of the most difficult mental capacity issues. Alex is a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Institute, a Visiting Lecturer at the Dickson Poon School of Law, and a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow at King's College London, working on the collaborative Mental Health and Justice project for the period 2017-2022. He spent from November 2016 to March 2017 on secondment to the Law Commission as a consultant to their Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty Project, and 2018 as legal adviser to the independent Review of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Dr Iris Rathwell

Iris is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and currently works with the national and specialist service for complex autism and neuro developmental disorders, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Her expertise is in autism with special clinical and academic interests in associated conditions with it such as epilepsy, additional psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders and psychopharmacological treatments. Iris has expertise in specialist assessments of complex autism particularly when this is associated with additional neuropsychiatric or other mental disorders. She has also developed expertise in pharmacological management of psychiatric disorders and/or problem behaviours when they occur in the presence of autism, ADHD or other neuro developmental disorders. Iris has extensive experience in developing clinical services for autism and related disorders internationally. She has been an expert with Autism Speaks in setting up services in the Balkan countries. She has contributed with her expertise and local knowledge to raising public awareness of autism and to the country developing a nationwide autism strategy. She was an international expert in the validation studies of gold standard screening and diagnostic tools as well as parent training programmes in a non-English speaking country carried out by the University of Connecticut (funded by Autism Speaks). Iris leads a team that focuses on specialist assessments and management of challenging behaviours and complex presentations of autism, ADHD, learning disability and other brain related disorders. In October 2019, she was appointed Lead Clinician for the entire National and Specialist Outpatient CAMH services in SLAM.

Dr Joshua Harwood

Dr Joshua Harwood is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist registered with both the British Psychological Society and the Health and Care Professions Council. He is a full member of the Division for Clinical Psychology. Dr Harwood currently works for the NHS in South London, at the Centre for Parent and Child Support. This is a specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), however Dr Harwood specialises in working with parents with mental health difficulties, meaning he has the experience and qualifications to work with adults, children, teenagers and families as a whole. In addition to his clinical work, Dr Harwood is a Clinical Research Psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, a department of King's College London. Here he develops and evaluates innovative clinical interventions to help children and their parents deal with a wide range of mental health conditions, in particular conditions that make being a parent even more difficult. He is a lecturer in Clinical Skills at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and an Honorary Lecturer at University College London. Dr Harwood is trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CBT) and Systemic Therapies, although he is able to integrate learning from a wide range of therapeutic techniques into his clinical work. He believes in forming truly collaborative relationships with clients, taking into account all of their needs, which enables them to make the changes that they desire. He is comfortable in exploring and using psychological principles to develop an understanding of a client's past, and how that impacts on their current behaviour, decisions, and relationships. However, he is also able to conduct an in-depth assessment of his client's current mental health needs and use this information to enable his clients to achieve long term improvements in their mental wellbeing.

Dr Owen O'Sullivan

Dr Penny Brown

Dr Penny Brown is a consultant forensic psychiatrist and research fellow at SLAM and the Institute of Psychiatry, with expertise and qualifications in mental health law. She has written extensively on mental health laws, and has carried out empirical research exploring the Mental Capacity Act and other mental health laws in practice. She has worked on policy projects with the Law Commission and the Department of Health, and in 2018 was seconded to the Parliamentary Office of Science and technology as a research fellow. She coordinates national training for s12 and Approved Clinician approval with Maudsley Learning and is the Mental Capacity Act lead for SLAM. Dr Brown is the Programme Lead for the iBSc in Forensic Psychiatry, Criminal Behaviour and Law.

Dr Sean Cross - Managing Director

He is Clinical Director for King's Health Partners' Mind and Body programme to improve mental and physical healthcare integration. He founded the nationally award winning Maudsley Simulation with James and is now the Managing Director of Maudsley Learning. He is passionate about delivering high quality education and training to improve the care and experience of service users. He is a past winner of the RCPsych's Trainer of the Year award and proud to be leading the Maudsley Learning team.

Dr Tony Rao

Dr Tony Rao is an international expert on alcohol misuse and co-comorbid mental disorders (dual diagnosis) in older people, with over 20 years of clinical, research and training experience in this clinical area. He has developed a "Training the Trainers" programme on Alcohol Related Cognitive Impairment for Addaction and runs an annual CPD update on substance misuse in older people at The Royal College of Psychiatrists. Tony is currently dual diagnosis lead for older adults and chairs the PMOA Dual Diagnosis Group. He is a Visiting Lecturer at the IoPPN and was previously Visiting Professor at London South Bank University. Tony was Associate Dean at London Deanery from 2008 to 2012, having helped to set up the School of Psychiatry. As well as hosting his own website www.alcoholandolderhealth.co.uk, Tony has contributed to policy development and research, with over 600 citations, several book chapters and media involvement to improve public education around alcohol use disorders in older people.
