Björn Duling

Björn Duling is qualified as German patent attorney and as representative before the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). He became partner of MERH-IP in 2017. He has been working for MERH-IP since 2010, first as patent attorney trainee and after his admission as a patent attorney as an associate. His activities are focused on drafting and prosecution of German and European patent applications in the fields of communication, information and data processing technology, including coding of audio and video signals, as well as in the fields of electronic components and circuits, technology for mobile information devices, consumer electronics, and physical measurement technology. He also provides legal assistance and technical analysis in invalidation proceedings and infringement matters. Björn graduated with honors from Technical University of Munich with diploma and doctoral degree in physics. Prior to starting his patent attorney training, Björn worked as a scientific research associate at Technical University of Munich where he participated in several international research projects and investigated the behavior of elementary particles at high energies.

Bruno M. Matias

Bruno M. Matias is German patent attorney and representative before the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). He is one of the founding partners of MERH-IP. His practice is focusing on prosecution of German and European patent applications including opposition and nullity proceedings in the fields of automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, electronic and electromechanical components, microelectronics and information technology. He has broad experience in matters of patent licensing, infringement proceedings and trademarks and has published papers on the subject of computer implemented inventions. Prior to his patent attorney education, he worked with Siemens AG as R&D engineer responsible for process control and optimization in the manufacturing of DRAM memory components. Bruno studied mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, specializing in data acquisition and control engineering and holds a degree in process engineering from TU Munich. He was a DAAD Scholarship holder, and worked as a fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service at the Engine Research Centre of the Wisconsin-Madison University, USA, with primary focus on applied research on internal combustion engines.

Christina Sauer

Christina is qualified as German patent attorney and as representative before the European Patent Office (EPO) and before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Her activities mainly include drafting and prosecution of european and international patent applications in the fields of mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and thermodynamik engineering. Christina studied mechanical engineering at THM University of Applied Sciences and automotive and engine technology at University of Stuttgart. Here PhD deals with the control of self-ignited combustion processes in gasoline engines, therefor she awarded a doctorate from University of Stuttgart. Before joining MERH-IP, Christina worked as development engineer for Robert Bosch GmbH, Stuttgart where she was active in development of injection components, calibration of engine control units, development of variable valve trains for combustion engines and combustion development. Then she switched to MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH, where she was responsible for combustion development for gas and diesel engines. Here last position in industry was in R&D gasoline engines at BMW AG, where she worked on new engine concepts and was responsible for combustion development again.

Daniel Meyer

Daniel Meyer is a technical expert at MERH-IP and qualifying as a German and European patent attorney. Mr. Meyer studied Physics, with a specialization in Biophysics and Complex Systems, at the Georg-August University of Göttingen, Germany. For his master thesis, he developed new soft lithography processes for the production of biomimetic elastomer units for stem cell development and finished his master's degree in 2015. Subsequently, he did his doctoral studies at the Institute of Biophysical Chemistry of the Georg-August University of Göttingen and specialized in cell-based medical engineering and the development of optical nanosensors, predominantly to identify small amounts of chemical substances in biological systems. Within his dissertation titled "Neutrophil Extracellular Trap (NET) Formation: From Fundamental Biophysics to Delivery of Nanosensors" he further analyzed the formation of immunologic processes, specifically the generation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), on the basis of biophysical measuring methods and transferred his insights to develop a new method for cell-based drug delivery. His work was honored with the title "best newcomer publication" by the foundation council of the Georg-August University of Göttingen in 2020. Furthermore he received his PhD degree in 2019, which was awarded with the grade "summa cum laude". Daniel Meyer began his work as a patent candidate at the MERH-IP in 2020 directly after his doctoral studies und has special experience in optics, software, nanotechnology, medical engineering and applied physics.

Dipl. Ing. Gerd Seligmann

Dipl. Ing. Gerd Seligmann studied precision engineering and microtechnology at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich. He completed his diploma dissertation at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Planegg in cooperation with the Technical University in Munich Garching. The content of this dissertation was the microscopic grain size determination of biogenic suspended particles in great water depth. As a development and design engineer, Mr. Seligmann was responsible for product development and assembly of different types of aeroplanes and helicopters, among others in the fields of interior and system installation. The focus in the interior area was on lightweight constructions using fibre composite materials. Another project in this area was the interior air conditioning and bleed air preparation as well as the installation of an emergency system for pipe bursts. Subsequently, he worked as a construction documentation examiner for the installation and approval of aircraft construction structures for jet planes, civil Airbuses and especially for military transporters. This includes the approval of all parts of the frame structure consisting of lightweight metal components for the front, middle and rear sections of wide-body aircraft. In a project at Zeiss, he was involved in the development of a new generation of transmission electron microscopes in the field of vacuum technology and microscopy. Since January 2019 Mr. Seligmann has been working as a patent engineer in Munich. Mr. Seligmann is a technical expert preparing for the qualification as a European patent attorney.

Eckart Hoffmann

Eckart Hoffmann is a German patent attorney and as representative before the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). He is one of the founding partners of MERH-IP. He was admitted as German Patent Attorney in 1973 and practices all aspects of intellectual property law with particular emphasis on the technical fields of electrical, electronical and mechanical engineering, particularly: computer hardware and software, digital signal processing, telecommunications, semiconductor technology, power semiconductor elements, power electronic converters, variable frequency drives, liquid crystal devices, radio and TV equipment, automobiles including control systems for internal combustion engines, optics.

Kai Uwe Becker

Kai Uwe Becker is a technical expert at MERH-IP currently preparing for the qualification as German and European Patent Attorney. As scholarship holder of the "Dr. Hans-Werner Hector Namenstipendiums", Kai participated between 2009 and 2012 in the English-taught bachelor program of mechanical engineering at the Carl-Benz-School of Mechanical Engineering of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and was honoured for his expertise with the Grashof-Award of the KIT. After finishing the consecutive master program with specialisation in the fields of continuum mechanics and dynamic machine modelling, Kai started as research assistant at the institute of engineering mechanics of the KIT in 2014. His research field was directed to fluid-based bearing concepts for high-speed rotors, especially regarding non-linear oscillations phenomena. During that time, he elaborated his doctoral thesis with the title "Dynamic behaviour of hydrodynamically beared rotors under consideration of varying bearing geometries", which is correlated to the fields of fluid-solid-interaction and non-linear oscillation theory. With submission of his thesis in 2019, Kai successfully acquired his doctorial degree.

Oscar Klier

Oscar Klier is German patent attorney and European trademark attorney. Oscar studied materials science at the University of Augsburg and received his Master's degree in 2012. After that, he started to work as a scientific associate at the Chair of Resource Strategy at the University of Augsburg and commenced the compilation of his doctoral thesis with the title: "Technological Persistency of Inorganic Solid-State Lighting Technologies ". After in-depth studies focusing on LED lighting systems and their physical/chemical fundamentals as well as on concepts of sustainability, he developed a rating system for the assessment of contemporary LED-based lighting devices with regard to resource consumption and functional benefits. He was awarded a PhD in 2017. Oscar began his work as a patent attorney candidate for MERH-IP in 2018 and provides extensive knowledge in the technical fields of vehicle technology, lighting technologies, semiconductors and solid-state physics.

Winfried Dohmen

Dr. Dohmen is German Patentassessor. As associate with MERH-IP his main working field lies in drafting and prosecution of German and European patent applications. The technical field of practice includes automotive engineering, especially combustion engines, hybrid vehicles and drive assistance systems, mechanical engineering, sensor technology and machine tools. Prior to starting his patent attorney training, Winfried Dohmen was a research and teaching scientist at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management - Technical University of Munich. He received his degree of doctor in the research area: development of mechatronic systems. Winfried Dohmen studied mechanical engineering and specialised in manufacturing technology and production engineering. He received his Diploma (master degree) from the Technical University of Munich.

Wolfgang Reichl

Wolfgang Reichl is German patent attorney and representative before the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). He is one of the founding partners of MERH-IP. His daily practice covers both patent prosecution and litigation, mainly in the areas of telecommunications, computer science, and software-based inventions. Wolfgang frequently represents clients in opposition, nullity and appeal procedures as well as in numerous patent infringement procedures before German courts. In addition, he has been appointed as technical expert by courts to provide opinions in questions of patent infringement. One of his particular professional interests is software patenting in Europe. He published several articles about this subject. Wolfgang was previously with the intellectual property practice of Jones Day where he was handling patent prosecution, opposition and nullity proceedings as well as patent litigation cases mainly for Fortune 500 companies. After qualifying as a patent attorney, Wolfgang obtained an LL.M. in the field of "European Intellectual Property Law" from the University of Hagen. Wolfgang graduated with honors from the Technical University of Munich with Dipl.-Ing. and Dr. degrees in electrical engineering and information technology. For more than three years, he was with Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies in New Jersey, USA, where he was involved in research activities in the multimedia communications lab, particularly in the fields of speech processing, speech recognition and understanding. Wolfgang also took an active part in the development of advanced telecom applications, such as call centers, distributed wireless multimedia applications, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony.
