Alexi Carli

Alexi Carli, CSP, spent more than 40 years with UPS, retiring as vice president of safety and health in 2018. In her role with the company, she prepared and presented business cases at various levels of the organization, including the C-suite. Carli is president of Carli Consulting LLC. She holds degrees in business management and occupational safety and health. In addition, she is chair of the ANSI/ASSP Z16 Committee developing a standard on safety and health performance metrics.

Amy Timmerman

Amy Timmerman is a highly seasoned safety professional who has held leadership positions implementing safety programs and services for global companies like GE, Siemens and Stryker. She is chair of the ANSI/ASSP Z10 Committee and a member of the leadership team for the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO Project Committee 283 that publishes ISO 45001, the international standard on occupational health and safety management systems. Timmerman is the president of AT Safety, a consulting firm that specializes in management systems. She is a recognized expert in management systems, risk assessments, incident investigation and regulatory compliance. Timmerman is also an assistant professor at Illinois State University, where she teaches courses in its safety degree program. Outside of safety, she is actively involved in Girls on the Run and is an avid fitness and health enthusiast.

Anil Mathur is a retired president and CEO of Oregon-based Alaska Tanker Company (ATC), which operates large ocean-going oil tankers from Alaska to Washington, California and Hawaii. Mathur first served as public director on our Board of Directors from 2018-21, and was reappointed to the role in 2023. He provides a corporate perspective from outside the occupational safety and health profession. His term runs through June 30, 2024. Mathur also serves as a trustee of the ASSP Foundation, the Society's charitable arm, in his dual leadership role. During his distinguished career, Mathur's commitment to workplace safety was well-known across the industry. He has been recognized by the governors and state legislators of Alaska and Washington for ATC's safety and environmental record. Prior to joining ATC in 2001, Mathur worked for BP for 20 years in management, corporate planning and facilities engineering. He also spent five years at Cities Service Company (CITGO) in engineering and in research and development. Mathur earned an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley; a master's degree in engineering from the University of Tulsa; and a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in India. He is an alumnus of Harvard Business School and resides in Portland, OR.

Daniel J. Snyder, Ed.D., CSP, CHST, OHST, CIT, is owner and founder of research-based consultancy Safety Mentor. He joined the ASSP Board of Directors on July 1, 2021, serving a three-year term. He also serves as a trustee of the ASSP Foundation, the Society's charitable arm, in his dual leadership role. James R. Thornton - President

James R. Thornton, CSP, CIH, FASSP, FAIHA, became the 109th president of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) on July 1, 2023, serving a one-year term. He also serves as chair of the ASSP Foundation, the Society's charitable arm, in his dual leadership role. He has been an ASSP member since 1998 and lives in Hampton, VA. Thornton has more than 50 years of workplace safety and health experience. He is president of consulting firm Alpha Industries LLC following a 40-year career directing safety, health and environment at Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest builder and repairer of U.S. Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines. He led the creation of a three-story primary healthcare center for families of maritime workers that serves more than 60,000 people. Prior to his time at the shipyard, Thornton worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Research Triangle Institute from 1971-76. Thornton has given ASSP a strong presence in Washington, D.C., through his extensive work in government affairs over many years. He earned the Society's President's Award and is a two-time recipient of the Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service Award. He also taught occupational safety and health courses at two colleges in Virginia. In 2020, Thornton became an ASSP Fellow - the Society's highest honor - for his significant contributions to the occupational safety and health profession. He holds a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from Auburn University and a master's degree in industrial hygiene from Texas A&M University. Thornton chaired the OSHA Maritime Advisory Committee for Safety and Health from 2003 to 2016 and is a recipient of the U.S. Department of Labor Distinguished Service Impact Award for his work with OSHA. Thornton believes in comprehensive worker well-being to holistically address an employee's safety and health, moving beyond traditional wellness initiatives. He also supports diversity, equity and inclusion, leading ASSP's commitment to principles of fairness, respect and equitable opportunities for all. And he promotes the continuous improvement of safety professionals no matter their career level, stressing the need for staying current on workplace safety strategies while possessing a strong business acumen. Among the many organizations he supports as a volunteer is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which helps find homes for surrendered animals and provides education on responsible pet care. Thornton and his wife, Donna, have been married for 52 years and have one daughter and three grandchildren. They were childhood sweethearts who grew up only three blocks apart in Alabama.

Gray has held numerous leadership positions within ASSP, including vice president of the Council on Region Affairs and vice president of Region III. He holds a bachelor's degree in fire protection and safety engineering technology from Oklahoma State University. An ASSP member since 2001, Gray has earned Safety Professional of the Year at the Society, region and chapter levels and received the Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service Award. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA. During his career, Gray has been a senior site WHS manager for Amazon; and global senior manager, HSE, for the Government Services Division of KBR, based in Houston, TX. He has also worked for FMC Technologies, Manhattan Construction, Dallas Cowboys, ISNetworld and CBRE during a safety career that spans nearly 25 years. Gray serves as a trustee for the Texas Safety Foundation and previously volunteered as a coach and board president for Miracle League DFW, a baseball association for children with special needs.

Tim Fisher, CSP, CHMM, CPEA, ARM, FASSP, has been with ASSP since 1995. He provides direction in the overall administration and operation of the technical aspects of ASSP-related standards programs and publications. Before joining ASSP, he was facilities and operations manager with Allstate Insurance Co. and he served in the U.S. Air Force. Page-Bottorff is a safety trainer, author, podcast host and motivational speaker who has been an ASSP member since 2001. He lectures for the OSHA Training Institute at the University of California San Diego Extension.
