While pursuing an MSc in Oncology, I realized that I belonged typing away at a keyboard instead of at the workbench. So, I applied my background in Biomedical Sciences to the field of Medical Communications, starting my first job in 2021. Throughout my journey as a medical writer, I've written a range of medical and public awareness materials (promotional and non-promotional congress materials, e-mails, eDetails, slide decks, leave aids, websites, video scripts, ad boards) and participated in the delivery of marketing and medical affairs campaigns for different brands. Though I have worked across many other therapy areas, most of my experience spans oncology, immunology, and diabetes, and these are therapy areas I'm quite passionate about. As an avid learner and curious writer, I'm happy to take on any challenge that comes my way, and keen on creating content that patients, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders can easily read, understand and, most importantly, remember.

I live with a curious mind and a knack for precision. I never went looking for science. Science found me, and we became besties. Life in the lab was a blast: the experiments, the friendships, the writing - it's where my attention to detail became second to none. Medical writing was meant for me the moment I saw it. A way to take the best from my PhD in Biomedical Sciences: the learning, the creativity, the words. I spent many moons harvesting knowledge on a thesaurus of therapy areas - including endocrinology, ophthalmology, dermatology, respiratory, infectious disease, vaccines, haematology, gastroenterology, mental health - and applying them to all kinds of technical and creative materials across the realms of medical affairs and marketing. As a medical writer turned agency CEO, I've built our services from a writer's perspective, allowing the writing and our writers to take centre stage. It's how we provide our clients with the most powerful medical communications services known to healthcare. Author bio With a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, two other life science degrees, medical education and advertising agency experience - all totalling 15 years - I can take a brief and produce wonderful words to suit any audience; be it doctor, nurse, patient, parent or professor. I've developed expertise across a wide range of therapy areas including ophthalmology, diabetes, asthma, COPD, psoriasis, infectious disease, vaccines, haematology, gastroenterology, iron deficiency anaemia, schizophrenia, BPH, neuropathic pain, testosterone deficiency syndrome, overactive bladder syndrome and HIV. I'm driven and motivated. I find it easy to get on with people from all walks of life. I like to listen to others, but also enjoy taking the lead. I'm confident, committed and passionate about healthcare communications. Some might say I like a challenge, from 20-mile assault courses through to being a father of three.

Dr Caroline Bradley

Job Titles:
  • Principal Medical Writer
  • Principal Medical Writer Monster Academy Lead
  • Principal Medical Writer Monster Academy Lead - Medical Writing
I am a Principal Medical Writer with a passion for education. After delving into the epigenetics of adrenal tumours during my PhD, my enthusiasm for medicine, combined with a love for sharing knowledge, led me through diverse roles-from a post-doc in industry to university lecturing and teaching. This journey ultimately led me into the wonderful world of med comms. My extensive medical writing experience spans agency, in-house, and the NHS. I've honed my skills across diverse materials, from slide decks and peer-reviewed publications to website copy and patient materials. My specialist therapy areas include genetic medicine, oncology, immunology, and cardiology. Right now, I fuse my medical writing and teaching expertise to head up the Monster Academy. I take pride in developing vibrant, dynamic learning experiences to upskill both individuals and teams in medical writing, whilst empowering writers to foster a growth mindset. My passion in the field of biomedical science is rooted in genetics. I completed a PhD investigating the epigenetics of adrenal cancer and subsequently worked in immunology as a postdoctoral research scientist, analysing clinical trials for a new diagnostic assay. Imparting knowledge and sharing my love of science steered me into university lecturing, teaching and scientific communications. I gained valuable experience from my years working for the NHS, where I developed resources for healthcare professionals and patients, helping to disseminate advances in genomic medicine. More recently, I worked within the scientific communications department of an in vitro diagnostic company; as a Medical Science Liaison I had responsibility for developing a range of materials focused on haematological malignancies and primary immunodeficiencies. Ultimately, I love the satisfaction of seeing the final product I have created, whether it be a written manuscript or resources developed from dissecting a detailed paper and transforming it into engaging and easily digestible content. I am now enjoying producing a variety of written materials that comes with working in an innovative healthcare communications agency.

Dr Holly Campbell

Job Titles:
  • Medical Writer
  • Medical Writer - Medical Writing
I found my way to Med Comms after my DPhil (in organic chemistry/chemical biology) at the University of Oxford, looking for a way to continue communicating science that fascinates me without having to run another silica purification in pharmaceutical drug discovery. During my writing career thus far, I have synthesised some slide decks, catalysed some clinical trial informed consent forms, and analysed some advisory boards. Oh, and vaporised some Veeva. The therapy area closest to my heart is antimicrobial resistance, and the impending threat for us all in modern healthcare from the beastly bugs. My specialty is writing for any audience, making the core message engaging, understandable, and digestible. I love to throw a bit of design in on the side where possible. I have always loved writing, and communicating science to a variety of audiences is something I've found rewarding and worthwhile during my career thus far. I trained as a synthetic organic chemist, completing a MChem at the University of Southampton, followed by a DPhil at the University of Oxford in organic chemistry/chemical biology on antimicrobials. Before becoming a medical writer, I worked for two years as a pharmaceutical chemist in a CRO, with lots of troubleshooting and patent writing! I love to participate in STEM outreach and have been able to take up lots of opportunities for teaching and demonstrating to school students and the public. I am excited to communicate high-level science in many different formats and continue building expertise about disease areas. In my spare time you can find me playing RPGs, reading graphic novels, or listening to music.

After reading through what felt like an endless amount of journal articles during my PhD, the ones that really stood out to me were well-curated with visually appealing figures (and scientifically sound data of course). This developed my love for scientific storytelling. Immediately after completing my PhD in breast cancer, I continued to work as a postdoctoral researcher in the field of oncology. Whilst I enjoyed being on the cutting-edge of oncology research, I decided to shift away from academia and stumbled my way into the world of Med Comms. I've been lucky enough to work on some exciting projects. I am excited that I can use my research and written skills in a space that allows for more creativity, whilst also giving me the opportunity to learn about a broad range of therapy areas. The life-first culture that is the heart of Word Monster has allowed me to do more of what I love.

Biology was a fascination to me throughout school, which led me to eventually complete a PhD and post-doctoral research at the University of Manchester. Crafting stories from my own scientific research was perhaps more rewarding than my findings were! I've worked on countless therapy areas over the years, including cystic fibrosis, CVD, haematology, oncology and virology. I've been lucky to be involved in a mix of projects, including standalone meetings and symposia; peer-to-peer educational programmes; congress materials; advisory boards; salesforce training materials, and publications. Despite being in the industry for some time, I still love learning about all aspects of healthcare, building lasting relationships and the satisfaction of seeing my content come to life. Biology was one of my favourite subjects at school and led me down a long path experiencing the highs and lows of academia, where I eventually ended up working as a post-doctoral researcher in Manchester. I was struggling to visualise a long-term career for myself in this setting, so sought out entry-level jobs in medical writing. Fast forward 11 years and my passion for wordsmithing, grammar pedantry, and all things scientific and strategic hasn't waned. I love learning about new therapies, creating impactful content and interrogating the brief to do the best job possible. Saying that, I still can't seem to articulate to friends and family what I do for a living. I don't think there is one single definition for a medical writer - our skills are countless. And anyhow, it makes me feel like Chandler Bing, which, upon reflection, is disappointing…

When I kept nodding off in front of the flow cytometer during my PhD, I realised I needed a change of scenery! Yearning for a role blending my love of science and writing, I stumbled into Med Comms. My Med Comms journey began at a top medical education agency, where I unearthed my passion for creativity and the written word. Transitioning to healthcare advertising, I developed my skills in creative and conceptual copywriting. Since then, I've gained experience across the spectrum of medical writing. With a rich background, I've spearheaded campaigns in diverse therapy areas, from anaemia to medical aesthetics, reproductive health, and type 1 diabetes. I am deeply passionate about making every piece of writing clear, compelling, and kind, ensuring our clients receive meaningful and forward-thinking solutions. When I kept nodding off at the flow cytometer, I realised that a life in the lab wasn't for me. Luckily my PhD supervisor praised my natural writing style, and I realised I had a coveted skill that didn't come easily to a lot of people. I learnt about med comms through a postgrad careers event and the choice was easy. When I finished my PhD in 2013, I packed my bags, crossed the River Severn and started a new life in London as a junior medical writer. Since then I've accrued nearly 7 years' experience in medical education and advertising, working across a range of therapy areas from narcolepsy to erectile dysfunction. I've been a part of a dizzying number of projects, from symposia slides to disease awareness campaigns. My work has taken me to ad boards in Bologna, photoshoots in Peckham and even lunchtime meetings in Luton. There's never been a dull moment! The thing I love most about my job is being able to take a complicated/convoluted message and turn it into something that resonates with the reader. This is especially important in pharma, as the right messaging can truly effect meaningful change. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than helping our clients achieve this.

After finishing my PhD in Regenerative Medicine at the University of Leeds, where I had broad experience across academia, industry, and the clinic, I kickstarted my career in Med Comms here at Word Monster. Since joining the writing team, I have worked on multiple therapy areas across many projects from promotional websites and branding to e-learning modules and congress materials. My experience spans across haematology, toxicology, and musculoskeletal disease, as well as being our in-house engineer with my knowledge in tissue engineering and orthopaedics. My passion lies in promoting positive change and impact through my work by delivering accessible scientific content tailored to the target audience. From academia to med comms - a common theme for many medical writers. For me, I had grown tired of laboratory work and the pressure that came with failed experiments. As my PhD came to an end, I found that I still had a passion for research, but academia wasn't for me. My writing time away from the laboratory was what I enjoyed most and led me to the world of med comms! My PhD was based on haemophilia and the musculoskeletal complications associated with the disease. This was the perfect project for me coming from a biomedical background. Since high school, I wanted to be a scientist. After completing a BSc in Biomedical Science, I went on to complete a MSc in Industrial Biotechnology as well as a brief stint in the biologics industry. Throughout my studies I found an interest in toxicology and regenerative medicine, which led me to my PhD combined with another MSc in Tissue Engineering. Now I am a part of the Word Monster team as an Associate Medical Writer and looking forward to the med comms journey ahead of me. I am passionate about having a positive impact through my work and at Word Monster I can do this for our clients, their customers and the wider population

Dr Rebecca Dawson

Job Titles:
  • Publications Lead
  • Senior Medical Writer Publications Lead
  • Senior Medical Writer Publications Lead - Medical Writing
I completed my PhD in regenerative neuroscience and then went on to post-doc in an oncology lab for 4 years, but I quickly realised I wasn't quite "green-fingered" enough for lab work. What I truly loved was the scientific story telling! Over my career as a medical publications writer, I've written manuscripts and congress materials on asthma, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, CVD, HIV and BPD. I've worked across everything from Phase I-III trials, pharmacokinetics studies, patient and physician surveys/HEOR, plain language summaries, patient education materials, to podcast manuscripts. I am a Certified Medical Publication Professional (CMPP™), committed to upholding the values of transparency and good ethical conduct in medical publications. While I love getting stuck into the data and the hard-core science, I believe that with the right approach, medical research findings can (and should!) be accessible to everyone. I have a PhD and a Masters in neuroscience, with a focus on cellular regeneration strategies for the treatment of multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury. After graduating, I worked as a post-doctoral researcher for 4 years, working in cancer metabolism and tumour microenvironment in pancreatic cancer. As much as I loved the science, I eventually had to admit that I just didn't have the magic, nor the pipetting skills, to be able to produce perfectly loaded Western blots. I knew that I wanted to stay in science but it took a bit of self-reflection and figuring out the things that I was good at before I set my sights on a career in med-comms. Almost 4 years later, I'm still here and still loving the opportunities for continual growth and development that med-comms brings. I've had the chance to work on COPD, asthma, schizophrenia, depression, and borderline personality disorder so it's safe to say that my research interests are pretty diverse, and I enjoy the challenge of gettng stuck into a new therapy area and immersing myself in the literature. Pubs are my thing… manuscripts, posters, abstracts, PLS… ! I've worked on several high-profile pubs accounts in the past, covering preclinical studies all the way through to Phase III trials, with review articles, graphical abstracts, and an avalanche of congress work thrown in for good measure. I love seeing the data come to life, and being part of the process of forming a story that has the potential to influence real-life decision making in healthcare. I'm also passionate about patient/caregiver education and involvement in research as well as the publica on process and I'm excited to see how the publications industry continues to develop over the next few years to be more inclusive of the patient voice. Away from my desk, I'm just trying to live my best mum-life spending as much time as I can with my family, preferably in the Great Outdoors! Special interests in cooking, gin, and impromptu rap battles with my colleagues… Yup, we know how to live here at Word Monster HQ!

I have spent a decade working in medical communications after completing my undergrad and PhD in Chemistry at UCL. Having completed an undergraduate degree and a PhD in Chemistry, I made the switch to medical communications six years ago and haven't looked back since. I love the tangibility of the work involved; being given a brief and turning it into something accessible and meaningful for the audience, whoever they may be. During my time in the industry, I've worked across a variety of therapy areas, including prostate cancer, ophthalmology, kidney disease, COPD, IPF, heart failure, iron-deficiency anaemia, migraine, breast cancer and fertility. I am passionate about healthcare and healthcare communications, and firmly believe in the impact our work can have, not just for our clients, but also their customers. I love words and science - being able to combine the two as part of my job is pretty fantastic.

I love to translate complex information into meaningful work that makes an impact for the lives of patients. Frank Frayne

Job Titles:
  • Account Executive
My love of Twitter, a BSc in Medical Pharmacology and a MSc in Cancer Biology & Therapeutics at Cardiff University gave me the unfortunate privilege of being able to see a massive dearth in well-communicated medical info within the public. Cue my journey into med comms, where I've spent the last 2.5 years carving out my role as WM's Veeva queen and Studio Exec. No therapy area has yet to better me although my newer role as a Studio Monster means I'm still learning to spin plates like an absolute master. My experience of having so many fingers in the Med Comms pie combined with an almighty thirst for knowledge gives our Client Services team a unique edge. I'm fresh out of university, having recently completed a degree in medical pharmacology at Cardiff Uni where I amassed experience in a huge array of therapy areas. During this time, I've had the opportunity to dabble in academia, working with Cardiff Uni's Institute of Infection & Immunity to co-author papers on antimicrobial resistance.

I enjoy med comms for its variety and its mix of science and creativity. In parallel to my writing role, I particularly enjoy training and mentoring junior writers. Jenny Owen

Job Titles:
  • Director & Head of People
  • Head of People - Operations
I'm a people person with experience in various human resource roles. I kicked off my educational career with a psychology degree before training in adult nursing. This skills combo treated me well in my early years in the NHS and private hospitals, working across medical and surgical units covering gynaecology, urology, orthopaedics, and plastics. However, I had to hit pause on my nursing career when my son was born with complex medical needs. The silver lining was that it meant I could support the growth of Word Monster, which was absolutely flying when I jumped on board full time. Due to the inherent flexible nature of the company, I was able to support my son in every way, and attend every appointment, all around this new career direction. You never know where life will take you. Something I keep front of mind as a Director and Head of People, to ensure our company continues to work for everyone. I'm lucky to be able to apply my real-world experiences and understanding of healthcare to the role, ensuring we recruit and retain the best. I graduated in psychology at university before working in HR for Aberdeenshire Council. Then I decided to become a nurse. And so I did, completing the course with a distinction. Since 2013, I've been gaining first-hand experience of working as a healthcare professional across a range of medical and surgical therapy areas, such as gynaecology, urology, orthopaedics and plastics. I've dabbled in business too, cofounding a successful eBay trading business. I'm the part time Office Monster for Word Monster now, performing a HR and office admin role… alongside taking care of three children (one with complex medical needs). I guess this makes me part nurse, part carer and part monster.
