Alex King

Alex grew up working in Colorado's construction industry, starting in high school and continuing through his first year of law school. Alex's legal career consists of advising clients through all phases of dispute resolution, real estate development, and transactional work, including leading a team for trial or arbitration, facilitating alternative dispute resolutions, performing real estate due diligence, entitling real property, easement negotiations, and drafting and negotiating construction contracts.

Bret Gunnell

Bret is a Denver-based construction attorney with a technical background, practicing exclusively in the area of construction law and litigation. Bret has extensive experience in mediating, arbitrating, and litigating a broad range of construction disputes. His practice involves public and private commercial, heavy/highway, and industrial projects ranging in value to over $1 billion. He is licensed in Colorado and Utah, and has arbitrated or tried cases in over a dozen states and U.S. territories. In addition to his work as a trial attorney, Mr. Gunnell has served on the American Arbitration Association's panel of construction neutrals, with experience both as mediator and arbitrator of construction disputes. He lectures and publishes frequently, and teaches a graduate-level course entitled "Legal Aspects of the Construction Process" in the Construction Management department of Colorado State University. He is consistently listed and recognized as among Colorado's Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, 5280's Top Lawyers, and Denver's Top Lawyers, as well as in Continental Who's Who, NADC's Distinguished Counsel and the Chambers (Tier 1) USA Registry for construction law. Bret is a cum laude graduate of Brigham Young University in civil engineering, with an M.S. degree in engineering management, with distinction, from the University of Missouri-Rolla, and a Juris Doctorate, with honors, from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was associate editor of the Texas Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif.

Bryce Martinez

Bryce Martinez grew up working for his father's commercial construction company which primarily specializes in the procurement of agricultural storage facilities for farmers in the southwest. In addition to this construction background, Bryce has experience installing and maintaining commercial climate control systems for the facilities he constructed. Bryce's industry experience and passion for construction allow him to easily connect with clients and efficiently manage construction disputes. Having worked multiple blue-collar jobs, Bryce understands the value of practical experience not only for construction professionals, but also for attorneys. While in law school, he specifically focused on developing his legal writing skills as an intern for Justice Monica Márquez of the Colorado Supreme Court and Magistrate Judge Scott Varholak of the United States District Court. Bryce also joined Colorado Law's barristers' council and competed in moot court to develop his skills as an oral advocate.

Buck Beltzer

As a professional engineer turned construction lawyer, Buck Beltzer develops strategies to turn around troubled projects, and he steps in to help resolve any disputes which are unavoidable. Buck has won cases tried to juries, arbitration panels, and judges. These disputes have involved contract scope, schedule/delay, impacts, standard of care, and construction defects on commercial, infrastructure, and energy projects, both private and public. He has represented parties to design-bid-build, CM/GC, target price, design-build, ESCO, incentive, and P3 delivery method agreements. He's resolved complex, multi-party, and multi-tier disputes where significant damages were at risk. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Buck worked as a civil engineer in Colorado and North Carolina, specializing in transportation infrastructure and major interchange projects. His team designed several high-profile projects, like the University Boulevard interchange portion of Denver's design-build TREX project and the roadway and ramp improvements for the Piedmont Triad International Airport's FedEx handling facility in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is licensed as a professional engineer in Colorado. Buck holds a Bachelors of Civil Engineering from Auburn University and a Juris Doctorate from University of Denver, where he graduated Order of the Coif, was awarded several American Jurisprudence awards, co-founded the Construction Law Society, and was an Associate Editor of the Law Review. Buck is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Nevada, and has represented clients via pro hac vice admission in Wyoming, Washington, Nevada, Kansas, Montana, California, South Dakota, Minnesota, and South Carolina.

Charles R. Ledbetter

Charles (Chuck) Ledbetter brings over thirty years of diverse construction law experience to the table. He has represented clients on all sides of the construction industry from developers and general contractors to subcontractors, design professionals, and material suppliers. For over a decade Chuck litigated several high-profile cases involving the construction of several of Denver International Airport's runways and concourse aprons. Chuck moved to Arizona in 2014 after the large downtown Denver law firm, where he was a partner for over twenty years, dissolved. Chuck also has expertise in construction insurance coverage issues having worked for a major insurance carrier as in-house counsel for over five years after moving to Arizona. Chuck is a graduate of the University of Denver where he earned his Bachelors, Masters, and Juris Doctorate degrees. Before that, Chuck served in the U.S. Air Force where he was a technical instructor. He is licensed in both Arizona and Colorado.

Chris Hayes

Chris graduated from Stanford University and from the top 5% of University of San Diego School of Law, as President of the PDP International Legal Honor Society and Articles Editor of San Diego Law Review. He began his legal career as a four-year Judicial Law Clerk for Senior U.S. District Judge Thomas Whelan, reviewing federal cases and drafting a wide variety of judicial opinions for the court (including by assignment at the Ninth Circuit). He then practiced complex commercial litigation at two of the world's largest law firms and a top San Diego boutique-with a particular emphasis on real estate, construction, and renewable energy matters. His law and motion work achieved strong results for clients in federal and state courts across Southern California, especially in matters of contract interpretation. He helped win summary judgment for a corporate client in a multistate federal fraud case, multiple dismissals in California Superior Court in a series of related solar contract disputes, favorable outcomes in several AAA arbitrations, and negotiated resolutions of difficult business problems.In 2022, Chris moved to the Fort Collins area from San Diego, California. He comes to BBG from an in-house Assistant City Attorney role at the City of Fort Collins, where he was principal advisor to the City's Building Services, Zoning, and transportation agencies. Chris worked closely with the City's Chief Building Official, its Engineering team, and its Development Review team on a variety of development, construction, and compliance issues. He reviewed complex development agreements for large projects across the City. He advised the Building Review Commission, the Land Use Review Commission, and City Council on matters pertaining to land use and occupancy, contractor licensing and regulation, zoning, and the application and revision of the City Code and Land Use Code. In close cooperation with the City's Purchasing team and its Director, Chris reviewed and helped negotiate large commercial contracts for the City inside and outside the construction industry. At BBG, Chris counsels clients through the process of review, drafting, and negotiation of large construction contracts. He leverages his litigation experience to advise on dispute resolution, and his affinity for writing to provide top-quality work product to achieve BBG client objectives. Chris is licensed in both Colorado and California, and in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Central Districts of California.

Christine Latham

Christine is a Michigan native, with over 8 years experience in construction management. Christine began her career in the oil industry, monitoring projects in North Dakota, prior to beginning a career in construction management in Colorado. As a project engineer at several large, well-respected construction firms, Christine learned construction from the pre-construction phase through project completion. She has assisted in managing projects ranging from $0.5 million to $90 million dollars. Christine has dedicated her career to assisting teams in preventing deficiencies and analyzing impacts. She will now assist BBG's clients and lawyers in developing the entitlement cases for claims in delay, extra work, and productivity. Christine obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University.

Dani Blaskovics

David Frommell

Combining a decade of engineering experience with a decade of legal work, David Frommell possesses intimate knowledge of both the technical and legal aspects of construction. He is experienced in all aspects of construction law, including trials, arbitration, mediation, claim preparation, and contract negotiation related to all phases of the development and construction process. He has represented general contractors, developers and owners on a wide variety of projects including reservoirs, oil and gas processing facilities, resort development, multi-family residential, and high-end single-family residential disputes. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois, David spent two years volunteering with the United States Peace Corps in Kenya. His time overseas taught him the importance of representing others and seeking practical solutions to difficult and complex problems. David subsequently returned to the University of Illinois to complete a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering. He then worked for a major global engineering company designing water treatment plants and pipelines. In 2010, David earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. After working for a year as associate general counsel for a major global engineering and construction company, he spent eight years at a large Denver law firm where he was elected as a partner and co-chaired the Construction Industry Practice Group. David joined BBG in 2019, to continue sharpening his focus on construction law.

Emily Densmore

Emily is an Arizona native that graduated from Colorado Christian University. After earning her degree, Emily pursued a career "on the hill" in Washington DC in 2018. She landed her first post college job at a non-profit as the Office Administrator and worked her way up to be their Events Space Coordinator. It was in that role Emily found her niche as an executive assistant. After a year at the non-profit, she went to work for a Virginia Congressman and served as his assistant. In August of 2021 Emily moved back to the beautiful sunny Colorado and worked as the Executive Assistant to the CEO and CFO of a corporation before joining the BBG team as an Executive Assistant.

Faith Culler

Faith Culler has recently joined BBG as a Legal Administrative Assistant and is excited to branch out into legal and construction law. Faith is a Colorado native, with a Business Associates degree from Red Rocks Community College. She has spent the last five years working in administration support roles, most recently working as a data analyst. Faith excels in crafting reports and handling large volumes of data, while also being passionate about helping others. Faith became interested in the legal industry after working as a county title clerk in Washington and hopes to continue to grow her knowledge at BBG.

Heather Degoey

Henry Bangert

Henry Bangert grew up in the construction business, working alongside his family in heavy civil construction throughout the Midwest and Mountain West. His first jobs were on airport and bridge projects in and around St. Louis and Denver. Henry's close family members still work in various sectors of this industry. Consequently, Henry's work for construction and engineering clients is a personal passion. Having lived through the ups and downs of the industry, he understands what critical negotiations, disputes and litigation mean from the perspective of the business owner, management, operations, as well as the litigator. Following law school at the University of Colorado, Henry joined the construction practice group at Sherman & Howard, L.L.C. in Denver. It is with Sherman & Howard that Henry received his legal training from Mike Cook, Bret Gunnell, Charlotte Wiessner, and many other well-respected construction attorneys. For six years, up until opening day of Beltzer Bangert & Gunnell LLP, Henry worked as Legal Counsel - U.S. Operations for PCL Construction Enterprises, Inc. As Legal Counsel for PCL, Henry worked with the most talented construction attorneys and consultants across the US, on both sides of the table. Today, Henry counsels clients in contract planning, negotiation, administration, and dispute resolution nationally in the construction and engineering industry. He frequently advises clients in contract and legal risk management through the project life-cycle. He has represented clients in the drafting and negotiation of numerous complex construction contracts priced between $1 million and $2 billion+. Jene is a natural problem solver and throughout her career as an Architect, Owner's Rep, Construction Manager and Expert Witness, she has developed an expertise in evaluating design, construction, schedule, cost and code related issues to facilitate successful project outcomes.

Justice William L. Waller

Michael Cowan is a litigator committed to addressing the needs of general contractors with a strategic, problem-solving approach which provides them with high-caliber advocacy, while always prioritizing their business needs. Michael's practice involves a variety of construction issues and projects, both public and private. Michael's experience includes managing construction disputes, in both litigation and arbitration, across the United States, including in Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Mississippi, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Wyoming. This experience includes prosecuting and defending delay, extra work, impact, inefficiency claims, and differing-site conditions on public and private jobs, as well as defending general contractors in multi-party disputes arising from the construction of hotels, condominiums, apartments, and commercial buildings. Michael also has significant experience representing design professionals in a wide array of construction disputes. Prior to entering private practice, Michael served as a law clerk with Chief Justice William L. Waller, Jr. of the Mississippi Supreme Court. He earned his J.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Mississippi Law Journal. He is a member of the American Bar Association Forum on the Construction Industry, the Colorado Bar Association, and the Mississippi Bar Association. Before attending law school, Michael worked as a learning and development specialist for Deloitte Services, LP in Nashville, Tennessee, and served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a civil affairs officer. Karen Anderson

Karen has a breadth of experience throughout Human Resources including strategic and progressive HR and looks forward to continuing to build on the company's outstanding culture. Karen brings substantial experience in employee benefits, 401k administration, multi-state payroll administration, performance management, compensation, recruiting/onboarding, and HR system implementations/conversions. Karen prides herself in striving for employee satisfaction paired with management goals and company vision. Karen maintains both the PHR and SHRM-CP human resources certifications and is a member of Mile High SHRM. Karen is originally from the midwest, but Colorado has been home for 15 years. Karen grew up in her family construction business.

Katherine E. Condit

She has over 20 years of civil litigation experience, primarily in the area of construction law. Prior to joining BBG, Katherine spent over 10 years representing design professionals in construction defect lawsuits. Katherine also has experience in commercial litigation, employment litigation, personal injury litigation, and insurance defense. Katherine's legal career has consisted of advising and representing clients through all phases of litigation and dispute resolution, filing and pursuing mechanic's lien claims, reviewing and drafting contracts, drafting motions, conducting written discovery and depositions, and participating in trials and arbitration.

Kaylyn Ireland

Kaysie D. Garcia

For more than 13 years, Kaysie has provided legal representation for a diverse range of clients involved in construction and government contract disputes in both federal and state courts in California. This includes handling cases related to industrial and commercial projects, as well as large-scale infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, pipelines, mass transit systems, military facilities, hospitals, public schools, airport taxi-ways, multi-family housing developments, hotels, restaurants, municipal pumping stations, and solar power generation facilities. Her extensive experience encompasses both prosecuting and defending disputes involving scope of work, additional time and payment claims, mechanic's liens, bid protests, differing site conditions, and delays. In addition to her courtroom work, Kaysie is well-versed in various alternative dispute resolution methods, including arbitration and mediation. Kaysie embarked on her legal career as a litigator specializing in construction and surety law at Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald L.L.P. in 2010. In 2016, she transitioned to focusing exclusively on construction litigation at Rogers Nemeth Germain PC. During her legal career, Kaysie also gained invaluable experience working as Assistant General Counsel at Shimmick Construction, where she managed Shimmick's ongoing litigation, reviewed and negotiated project contracts, and served on the company's response team navigating the Covid-19 pandemic. Laura A. Wilson

Laura was born and raised in Colorado and has been witness to Colorado's ever growing and changing construction industry. Laura's passion for the real estate sector stems from her family's extensive involvement in diverse real estate activities. Laura began her legal career in 2008 as an attorney for the 18 th Judicial District Attorney's Office. She was most recently a Chief Deputy District Attorney managing a team of attorneys, paralegals, investigators, and staff. She also routinely litigated and tried some of the most significant cases in that jurisdiction. Laura's concentration in construction law stems from an interest for this field and her desire to contribute her specialized litigation skills to this dynamic area of law. Michael Zehner

Michael Zehner was raised in the heavy civil construction industry. Working for his father's heavy civil construction company from a young age, he was a laborer, equipment operator, foreman, and (eventually) project manager; pursuing, performing, and directing work for infrastructure and energy clients, both public and private. This background and his continued passion for the industry allow him to swiftly grasp the underlying facts of construction disputes and develop strategies for their efficient resolution. Michael brings a strong skillset of drafting agreements, motions, briefs, and pleadings to his litigation-focused practice, while his extensive contract drafting, review, negotiation, and management experience benefit clients at all stages of the life of their construction projects. Michael currently serves the Colorado Contractors Association as a member of the Associate Council, 2024 Chair. He also is a lecturer at the University of Colorado Boulder's College of Engineering & Applied Science, where he teaches a graduate-level course on the legal aspects of construction. Prior to joining BBG, Michael was a construction attorney at a large, Denver-based firm. During law school, Michael was the president of the Construction & Real Estate Law Association, and he was a law clerk at a local boutique construction law firm and a legal intern with Summit Materials, Inc. Michael still occasionally runs CAT equipment for his father's company on the weekends and, in his remaining free time, continues to enjoy the Colorado outdoors with his wife, son, and their various dogs and cats.

Rachel Broyles

Rachel has over a decade of experience in civil litigation and counseling. She began her career in Chicago at Winston & Strawn LLP, where she worked on a wide range of matters, including antitrust litigation, class actions, securities litigation, employment litigation, contract disputes, and white collar crime. From there, she went on to the law firm of GoodSmith Gregg & Unruh LLP, focusing her practice on disputes involving contracts, business torts, warranties, trade secrets, employment discrimination, and restrictive covenants. In 2019, Rachel moved to Colorado and joined BBG as Of Counsel. Rachel's particular area of expertise, and personal passion, is legal writing and research. She has drafted large-scale federal appellate briefs, minor discovery motions, and everything in between. In Chicago, she was an adjunct law professor at Loyola University School of Law, where she taught legal writing, analytical thinking, and research strategies to first-year law students. She has also lectured at Northwestern University's Kellogg School Management, served as a guest moot court judge at Notre Dame Law School, and volunteered for various educational programs, including the Duke Reader Project and Junior Achievement. Rachel is a member of the Legal Writing Institute and the Association of Academic Support Educators. Rachel received her Bachelor of Arts from Duke University, and her Juris Doctorate from Notre Dame Law School, where she served on the Executive Board of the Notre Dame Law Review. She is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Illinois.

Rahul Ranade

Rahul Ranade is a California-licensed construction and infrastructure attorney whose practice is focused on projects related to energy, transportation, water and other public services. He provides legal advice to project owners, operators, and builders during all project phases including financing, procurement, implementation, and operations. Prior to entering the field of law, Rahul practiced as a civil engineer on public infrastructure and energy projects for more than a decade, which gives him insights into complex technical and regulatory aspects of projects. In the field of renewable energy, Rahul has helped draft EPC and module-supply agreements for utility-scale solar developments in multiple states and has assisted hydropower project owners with FERC regulatory compliance.

Rhonda Rudolph

Ryan Markham

He started his legal career with Chee Markham & Feldman in Honolulu, where he represented owner/developers, general contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers, insurers, and sureties. Ryan has extensive experience in delay claims, mechanic's and materialman's liens, bond claims, defects, bid protests, as well as contract review, contract negotiations, and OSHA defense. He also has significant civil trial experience. Ryan was born in Boulder, Colorado, and raised in Kailua, Hawaii. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics from Colorado College and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law. While in law school, he served as President and Co-Founder of the Federalist Society student chapter, Treasurer of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honors Fraternity, and received a CALI excellence for the future award for Criminal Law.

Scott Shea

Scott practiced architecture for almost fourteen years before attending law school, focusing on senior housing, military, and state agency projects with budgets from $5 million to $90 million. As an architect, Scott was a problem solver during both the design and construction process. He also conducted research on senior housing and developed a specialization in accessible design. He was one of the drafters of Colorado's accessible housing law, and past chair of the AIA Colorado Government Affairs Committee, on which he still serves. Scott continues to solve problems for our clients by bringing his industry background together with his legal training. Scott has litigated contract, bond, construction defect, and drawing copyright violation cases on behalf of clients on every side of the construction contract, particularly general contractors.

Stephen Wichern

Stephen supports contractors, subcontractors, and public and private owners in the drafting and negotiation of construction contracts for infrastructure and commercial projects of all natures and sizes. Stephen also provides guidance and assistance to project management teams on a variety of issues arising during the performance of construction projects, including pursuing relief for excusable events, addressing lien claims and discharging sub-tier liens, and finalizing completion certificates and project close-out. Stephen's passion is to leverage his breadth of knowledge and experience to represent his clients' needs in the construction process as effectively and efficiently as possible. Before law, Stephen was a structural engineer in Colorado, designing various commercial and public structures and gaining his Professional Engineer license. While supporting transportation and land development projects, he designed bridges, retaining walls and culverts, and oversaw preparation of design plans and construction services. His work in the private sector focused on mid-size vertical commercial, where he designed foundations, retaining walls, floor systems and connections. Stephen joined BBG Law after seven years as Senior In-House Counsel for an international renewable energy company specializing in the development and construction of utility-scale solar, wind, and battery storage projects. This followed his time as a business litigation associate in the construction practice group of a top-100 law firm. Suzanne Wilson

Suzanne leads BBG's real estate and development practice where she represents general contractor clients with their real estate needs and provides full transaction support to development clients during all phases of the development lifecycle including property acquisition and disposition, due diligence, financing (both public and private), leasing and construction support. Suzanne has worked on both the business and legal side of the development and construction industries, and brings experience and understanding to both the legal and business needs of her clients. Suzanne began her legal career in 2004 as an attorney in the Real Estate, Development, Land Use, and Finance group at the Denver-based law firm of Holme Roberts & Owen, LLP (now Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP). In 2008, Suzanne transitioned to a real estate and development consulting firm as a Senior Project Manager assisting clients with all aspects of real estate development. Suzanne also spent over 3 years as corporate counsel for an international heavy civil contractor where she was responsible for the contractor's subcontracting process and all real estate issues, as well as assisting the general counsel with management of outside counsel on both litigation and contracting matters. Her experience includes negotiation of multi-million-dollar subcontracts and supplier agreements, training the contractor's engineering and business staff on contracts and risk mitigation, negotiating both short and long term leases on behalf of the contractor and training the project teams on owner contracts. Suzanne has been involved and provided legal support on both bid-build and design-build construction projects from bid to closeout.

Theresa Wheeler

Theresa is a Colorado native with a Bachelor of Science in International Business and Marketing from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She grew a career as a highly respected sales, marketing, and business development executive with major branded hotels in Denver, where she excelled at building long term client relationships. She also spent time as a large bid writer for a global travel management company and was a National Sales Manager in the conferences and events industry. She is excited to use her skills and experience to inform her role at BBG.

Tim Reilly

Tim's diverse background includes leading the legal and risk management functions for one the region's premium providers of construction management, general contracting, and real estate development services. He understands the decisions contractors make to execute tactical projects and strategic programs and provides guidance and preventative legal advice to executive teams and business units regarding transactional and operational matters. Tim drafts and negotiates construction agreements, utilizing AIA, DBIA, Consensus, or custom forms relating to various methods of project delivery. He is experienced in design-build and public private partnerships. He recognizes the ownership perspective as he counseled project owners in the past and held leadership positions with a commercial property owner's association. He brings this knowledge to assist in project success and collaborates to improve operational processes such as contract workflows and training for project managers. In addition, Tim assists clients with disputes relating to schedule delay, defects, trust fund violations, performance and payment bond claims, mechanic's lien, and termination.

Tim Shannon

Tim advises his clients through the complexities of corporate governance, entity selection, business structures, and succession planning. Through his work, Tim strives to balance liability mitigation concerns against practical business needs and efficiency goals. Prior to joining BBG, Tim began his legal career at Hutchinson Black and Cook, LLC in Boulder, Colorado, where his practice focused on entity formations, mergers and acquisitions, real estate transactions, and general, transactional corporate work. Throughout his career, Tim has built meaningful relationships with his clients and always aspires to become a trusted business advisor to those that he works with. During law school, Tim graduated in the top 5% of his class with a certificate in taxation and gained meaningful experience through his externship with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. When not at work, Tim can be found playing the guitar with his garage band and enjoying the beautiful Colorado outdoors with his wife and their golden retriever.

Todd Bressler

Todd Bressler has joined BBG to lead operations in California. Todd has spent his 28+ year legal career providing strategic legal and business guidance to clients across the AEC industry. In doing so, Todd has advised and collaborated with CEOs, Boards of Directors, executive leadership, corporate partners, and in-house counsel in an outside general counsel capacity, focusing on contract negotiations, corporate governance, employment matters, compliance protocols, project safety, and the general management of risk, whether through internal mitigation efforts or the litigation/arbitration process. In doing so, Todd served as a trusted advisor to executive leadership related to the mitigation of risk and disputes, strategic planning, and the development of operational management through empowerment and coaching. Todd has also served as lead litigation counsel in a variety of construction and real estate disputes. Most recently, Todd served as the Chief Legal Officer at Bernards, a regional general contractor in Los Angeles and, immediately prior to that, as General Counsel, West Region at Suffolk Construction Company, Inc., a national contractor headquartered in Boston. Before that, Todd practiced in construction and real estate law firms where he provided corporate management guidance and assisted his clients with all legal matters. Todd recently held positions on the executive board of the Southern California Development Forum, a philanthropic industry association, where he currently serves the Board's Legal Advisor, a role he also provides to the Board of the ACE Mentor Los Angeles/Orange County Chapter.
