Antonia Balmaceda

Antonia is our bilingual staff accountant. She was born and raised in Chile but has lived in the US for over two decades. Antonia is finishing her degree in Public Accounting with a minor in Spanish at Southern Oregon University. Outside of work, Antonia enjoys playing pickleball, dancing, hiking, and spending time with her teenage daughter.

Cara L. Hartman

Cara L. Hartman, E.A. started with Reid, Hanna, Johnson & Co CPAs LLC as a remote tax preparer in 2018 and joined the firm as a partner in 2021. She is relocating to the Southern Oregon area in the Summer of 2022 so she can be more involved. Cara was born and raised in Northern California, where she started her own family. She began working in tax and accounting in 2000 with her first job in a CPA firm. She pursued her education and graduated in 2005 with her Associates of Science in Business Administration-Accounting, later passing the Enrolled Agents exam and becoming enrolled to practice before the IRS in 2006. She resigned from a second firm in 2014 to focus on raising her toddler after her spouse passed away. In 2017, Cara and her daughter moved to Washington state where she continued serving a few select clients while working remotely as an independent contractor for Reid, Hanna, Johnson. She recently earned her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from WGU and has over 15 years of experience assisting small businesses with payroll, accounting, and taxes, as well as individual tax preparation. Cara enjoys spending her time outside of the office with her large extended family and sewing for her daughter and her nieces and nephews.

Charlie J. Burns - CEO

Charlie Burns, CPA, joined the staff at Burns and Company (Formerly Reid, Hanna, Johnson) in 2014 and became a partner in the firm in January 2017. As of January 1, 2020, Charlie is the Managing Partner of Burns & Company CPAs LLC. Charlie grew up and lived in Northern California where she also raised her four children and completed her education. After working in private industry as a controller and public accounting for several years, Charlie returned to school to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. She is a licensed CPA in Oregon and California and has extensive government and nonprofit audit experience as well as business and individual tax, accounting, and consulting experience. Charlie's focus is for the firm to create partnerships with clients to help them drive their business and lives forward. To do so, we are honest and real, we are consistent, we do work we are proud of, and we integrate work and life. We are passionate about serving clients.

Elena Marquez

Elena was born and raised in the Sacramento Valley and moved to Ashland with her partner, Carson, at the end of 2022. She is the Office Administrator for the firm and is currently working on her Bachelors of Science in Business Administration at Southern Oregon University. Outside of work and school, Elena enjoys going for hikes, rafting in the summer, and spending time with friends and family.

Julie Shelton

Julie was born and raised in Southern California and moved with her family to the Rogue Valley in 2001, after graduating from high school. A few years later she became a part of our company and has been a smiling face here since December 2003. Julie has been married to her husband, Will, since 2007, and enjoys spending most of their free time loving and raising their 5 awesome boys Billy, Benjamin, Uriah, Joshua, and Boaz.

Linda Oltrogge

Linda grew up in Montana and came to Oregon in 1997 to join the financial management team of the Medford Clinic. She worked for 15 years in the local healthcare and retail industries and has been with us since 2014. Linda provides accounting and tax services for the firm. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Accounting and her Montana CPA License in 1994. Recently she also obtained her Oregon CPA License. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling around the world for scuba diving and yoga, volunteer work in Nepal, and visiting friends and family in Montana. At home, she enjoys gardening, camping, hiking, and spending time with friends.

Madeline Hofferber

When Maddie first started her career in public accounting a decade ago, she was a freshly-graduated staff accountant at her hometown CPA firm, where she met then-manager Charlie Burns (before Charlie went on to become Managing Partner of Burns & Company). At her hometown firm, Maddie gained experience in tax, accounting and assurance services in a wide variety of industries, helped start a staff training & mentorship and seasonal internship program, and obtained her CPA license in 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic and the related widespread acceptance of remote work allowed Maddie to follow Charlie, who had continued to be a mentor even after they parted ways, to Burns & Company. Maddie joined the firm as a Tax & Accounting Manager in 2021, working remotely from her home in Northern California. Working remotely allows Maddie to spend more time being present with her husband and two young children (as well as their two cats and four chickens!) while still being able to serve clients in a dynamic profession that she loves. Outside of work, she is a lifelong soccer player, avid reader & writer, amateur outdoorswoman, wife and mother with a love for travel and eating delicious food.

Marilyn J. Hanna

Marilyn was a partner with Tom in Reid Hanna and Company LLP for over 30 years and continues to work with many of her long-term clients at Burns & Company. Marilyn moved to Ashland in 1973 from Portland after graduating from Oregon State University in 1970. She started with Tischhauser, Bubb, and Company as a receptionist, advancing to bookkeeper after a few years while taking accounting classes at Southern Oregon College. Marilyn passed the CPA exam and was certified in 1981. Together with Tom Reid, they purchased Tischhauser Cooper and Company on November 1, 1983. Marilyn lives in Ashland with her husband, Tom Reid, and several cats and two dogs. Together they spend much of their free time at their vacation home on the Rogue River in Trail.

Matthew Carter

Matthew grew up in San Diego, CA. He spent 5 years in the US Navy and would later pursue a career in various aviation industries, which eventually led him to Central Oregon. After some life events, Matthew decided to pursue a degree in Accounting at Oregon State University-Cascades. Matthew started out in Public Accounting at a small firm in Redmond, OR and later worked for the Government. He got back into Public Accounting after moving to Cody, WY and joined Burns & Company in November of 2023. Matthew lives in Cody, WY with his wife and their three dogs. Outside of work, Matthew enjoys off-roading, camping, hiking, snowboarding, hunting, playing games & spending time with his wife and dogs

Shalene West-Mason

Our Operations Manager, Shalene spent the early years of her childhood in Central Oregon and moved with her family to Southern Oregon in 2006. She graduated from Southern Oregon University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and is currently pursuing her Masters in Business Administration at SOU. Shalene enjoys spending her free time reading, hiking, gardening, and spending time with her friends and family. She commutes from Medford where she lives with her husband, Anthony. Shalene and Anthony welcomed their first child, Blake (a girl), in May of 2023.

Thomas T. Reid

Tom was a partner with Marilyn Hanna in Reid, Hanna, and Company LLP for 30 years, beginning November 1, 1983, when Tom and Marilyn acquired Tischhauser, Cooper, and Company. Ernie Tischhauser originally founded Tischhauser Cooper in 1955. Tom continues with Burns & Company working a less arduous schedule without firm administration responsibility. Tom's family moved to Ashland from Portland in 1955. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1965 and attended Oregon State University for three years. He returned to school at Southern Oregon College and began taking accounting and business courses. He graduated in 1971 and began work in Albany, Oregon, in the newspaper advertising business. He returned to Ashland in 1976 to take additional accounting and finance courses to prepare for the CPA exam. He began working as an intern for Tischhauser Cooper while attending SOC. After passing the exam and getting his certificate, he was offered the publisher's position at the Ashland Daily Tidings, where he was employed until the 1983 purchase of the accounting practice. Tom has been extremely active in the Ashland and Southern Oregon community, having served on boards and held leadership positions for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Ashland Community Hospital, Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, Ashland Rotary, Ashland Chamber of Commerce, SOU Regional Advisory Board, SOU Foundation, and Mt. Ashland Ski Association, among others. Tom is married to Marilyn Hanna and has two adult children. Nick lives in Bend, and Annie Reid Driver lives between Ashland and Jacksonville. Tom provides income tax preparation and planning and accounting and business advisory services to clients of the firm.
