Since completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Michael has been involved in the energy management field. His experience includes HVAC design, demand side management, energy engineering, and community energy planning for both municipalities and First Nations. During his tenure at BC Hydro, he provided technical support to the Power Smart New Building Design Program. His work there included the design of new incentive programs, reviewing and evaluating energy studies, and providing expertise to customers and staff. He was instrumental in the 1993 redesign of the New Building Design Program, basing it on ASHRAE 90.1 standards. He also represented BC Hydro at the judging of the annual energy efficient design competition, and spoke at numerous technical seminars. While with Tescor Energy Services (now Ameresco Canada), Michael filled the position of Senior Engineer for the western Canadian office. He was responsible for energy audits, feasibility studies, and development of energy conservation measures for Canada's largest energy services company. Supervising a staff of energy professionals and technicians, he also worked closely with other team members in the detailed design and implementation phases of some of western Canada's largest energy performance contracting projects. While Senior Energy Planner for the Community Energy Association, he assisted local governments in the development of energy and greenhouse gas reduction plans. His responsibilities included development of energy planning resources for local governments, delivery of workshops, and outreach support. Currently, as principal of Enerficiency Consulting, Michael provides consulting services in energy and greenhouse gas planning. He is involved in a diverse range of projects, including community energy and greenhouse gas plans, energy audits, computer energy simulations, and utility demand side management. Michael was a member of the working group for the Review of Energy Performance for Buildings in British Columbia, the Province's Community Energy & Emissions Inventory initiative, and the Province/UBCM Green Communities Committee. He is the author of several publications related to energy and greenhouse gas reduction planning, and has spoken extensively on energy and climate change planning at conferences and workshops throughout the province. Michael is a registered professional engineer in British Columbia and is a LEED Accredited Professional.
