Bisola Onajin-Obembe

Dr. Onajin-Obembe is a Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Dr. Onajin-Obembe also practices and teaches pediatric anesthesia, as well as anesthesia for maxillofacial and ear, nose and throat surgeries, and she has publications in these areas. She has developed interests in team building, leadership, strategy and organizational change management of which she plays roles within and outside Nigeria. She is actively exploring her interest through an international executive PhD program. (UK)

Dr. Fizan Abdullah

Job Titles:
  • Assistant Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University
Dr. Fizan Abdullah is Assistant Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine and Associate Professor of International Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is also the Assistant Program Director for the Residency in General Surgery and the Program Director for the Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Abdullah's expertise is in surgery for infants and children with congenital anomalies as well as advanced laparoscopy. His research interest relates to lung development, tissue engineering, outcomes research, extracorporeal life support, and global surgical education. Since 2006, Dr. Abdullah has been extensively involved in global surgical initiatives throughout West Africa, focusing specifically on health system improvements and surgical education. He has also worked as a consultant for a number of World Health Organization initiatives. In 2011, Dr. Fizan Abdullah was appointed a Director of the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Abdullah graduated from Jefferson Medical College with a Doctorate in Philosophy and Medicine. He completed his residency in General Surgery at Yale University and a Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. (USA)

Dr. Jaymie Henry

Dr. Jaymie Henry defines the strategic direction for the G4 Alliance, develops and oversees relations with stakeholders and partners, and organizes political and advocacy events in support of surgical care at various global venues. She was previously the Executive Director of the International Collaboration for Essential Surgery (ICES) and is the Executive Producer, Director, and writer of the Global Surgery advocacy film "The Right to Heal". Prior to joining the Alliance, Dr. Henry has advocated for surgical care as a speaker and presenter at multiple international venues. She received her medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, and a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. Dr. Justine Davies

Dr. Justine Davies' objective is to improve health at individual and global levels, an objective she is able to persue in her current position as Editor in Chief of The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology. She has been instrumental in overseeing the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. Dr. Davies has an extensive background in medical research, and holds a strong belief that "humans cannot achieve maximal health gains without living sustainably within our environment." She holds degrees in Forensic Medicine, Medicine, and Zoology from the University of Dundee in Scotland. (UK)

Dr. Stephen Bickler

Prior to joining the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Stephen Bickler was the Consultant Pediatric Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Banjul, The Gambia. He has served as a consultant for the World Health Organization on surgery in low-income countries and has published extensively on strategies for improving the surgical care in settings of limited resources. Dr. Bickler has edited two pediatric surgery textbooks for sub-Saharan Africa, is currently a co-Principle investigator on a five-year National Institutes of Health research project designed to improve surgical care in rural areas of Mozambique, and is involved with the third edition of Disease Control Priorities. His research interests include surgical epidemiology and the role of surgical care in primary health care systems. Dr. Bickler received his medical degree from UC Irvine, College of Medicine, Irvine, California. He completed his surgical residency at Oregon Health & Science University and his fellowship at Children's Mercy in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. (USA)

Edward Kelley

  • Director for the Department of Service Delivery and Safety at the World Health Organization
Dr. Kelley is Director for the Department of Service Delivery and Safety at the World Health Organization. In this role, he leads WHO's efforts at strengthening the safety, quality, integration and people centeredness of health services globally and manages WHO's work in a wide range of programs, including health services integration and regulation, patient safety and quality, blood safety, injection safety, transplantation, traditional medicine, essential and safe surgery and emerging areas such as mHealth for health services and genomics. Prior to joining WHO, he served as Director of the U.S. National Healthcare Reports for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Dr. Kelley also directed the 28-country Health Care Quality Improvement (HCQI) Project of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development. Formerly, Dr. Kelley served as a Senior Researcher and Quality Assurance Advisor for the USAID-sponsored Quality Assurance Project (QAP) and Partnerships for Health Reform Project Plus (PHRPlus). In these capacities, he worked for ten years in West and North Africa and Latin America, directing research on the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness in Niger. Prior to this, Dr. Kelley directed the international division of a large US-based hospital consulting firm, the Advisory Board Company. His research focuses on patient safety, quality and organization of health services, metrics and measurement in health services and health systems improvement approaches and policies. Very recently, Dr. Kelley was asked to lead the Infection Prevention and Safety and the Health System Recovery teams for WHO's Ebola Response effort. (USA/ Switzerland)

Melanie Walker

Dr. Walker joined the World Bank Group after serving as the Deputy Director for Special Initiatives with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and previously in various capacities at the WHO related to macroeconomics and health. Prior to this time she was a health care practitioner and founder of a community program in the developing world. She received her bachelor and medical degrees at the University of Texas, later completed residency/fellowship training in the clinical neurosciences at Huntington Memorial Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the University of Washington and post-doctoral studies in computation at the California Institute of Technology. Her areas of expertise are cerebrovascular disease and computational neurophysiology. She sits on the Executive Board of the American Medical Association Foundation and was recently named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum as well as a Harold and Joann Hoffman Endowed Lecturer by the American Academy of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Rachel Nugent

Dr. Nugent is Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington and Principal Investigator for the Disease Control Priorities Network (DCP3). She was formerly Deputy Director of Global Health at the Center for Global Development, Director of Health and Economics at the Population Reference Bureau, Program Director of Health and Economics Programs at the Fogarty International Center of NIH, and senior economist at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. She has advised the World Health Organization, the U.S. Government, and non-profit organizations on the economics and policy environment of NCDs. She received her MPhil and PhD degrees in economics from the George Washington University in Washington, DC, USA. (USA)

Ray Price

Along with his position at the University of Utah, Dr. Price is also a trained General and Trauma Surgeon, Intermountain Surgical Specialist with Intermountain Healthcare; Director of Graduate Surgical Education at Intermountain Medical Center, Salt Lake City, Utah; Associate Director of the Center for Global Surgery, University of Utah; Professor, Health Sciences University of Mongolia; and Medical Director, Dr. W.C. Swanson Family Foundation, Ogden, Utah. He focuses on advanced laparoscopy, surgical oncology, endocrine, and trauma surgery. He first developed a passion for global medical work while a missionary for two years in Thailand from 1978-80. Since then, Dr. Price has participated in or led medical and surgical expeditions to Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Haiti. Over the last 10 years, he has been dedicated to improving education and access to surgical care globally, especially in resource poor areas. He is a member of the International Medical Surgical Response Team (IMSURT) West, one of the three federal international disaster response teams in the United States. Dr. Price received his undergraduate degree from the University of Utah, his Medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and completed a surgical residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. His greatest work, however, is with his wonderful wife Anne and their 7 daughters and one son who also volunteer internationally and at home. (USA)

Richard Sullivan

Richard Sullivan, MD, PhD, is Professor in Cancer Policy & Global Health at Kings College London and Director of the Kings Institute of Cancer Policy where he leads the cancer global health program. He is Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Catolica, Chile, and on the Kings Marjan Centre for Conflict & Conservation. He holds a PhD in cell signalling and has a background in pharmaceutical R&D. He has previously studied complex healthcare systems as well as the national security implications of global health. Richard's global health programmes extend from the public policy of global cancer, to the development of public health systems in high-risk, conflict areas focusing on DR Congo, Afghanistan, Syria & Libya.
