Jun-ichi IMURA

Imura was associate professor at Hiroshima University from 1996 to 2001. He also spent one year as a visiting researcher at the University of Twente from 1998 to 1999. Imura joined Tokyo Tech's Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering as associate professor in 2001, becoming professor in 2004. He has been professor at the new School of Engineering since its establishment in 2016. From 2018 to 2022, he was director of the Tokyo Tech Academy for Leadership (ToTAL) and director of the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL).

Kaoru Kuwata - EVP

Kaoru Kuwata has served as executive vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion since February 2023. Before assuming her current position, Kuwata was Tokyo Tech's vice president for research development from 2018 to 2023, and the university research administrator (URA) director from 2019 to 2023. She also served as a specially appointed professor and URA at the Institute of Innovative Research and the Frontier Research Center. After earning her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Japan Women's University in 1981, Kuwata joined NEC Corporation's research staff, where she spent the next two decades working on microcomputer software, system-on-chip development, and system large-scale integration. During this time, she also earned her master's degree in business administration from Hosei University in 1994. From 2003 to 2010, Kuwata was Engineering and Business Unit manager at NEC Electronics Corporation. After this, she spent five years as senior specialist at Renesas Electronics Corporation from 2010 to 2015. During this period, Kuwata also served the Association of Super-Advanced Electronics Technologies as researcher from 2008 to 2011. From 2011 onwards, Kuwata spent four years formulating industry strategy at the Semiconductor Industry Research Institute Japan. A specialist in business administration and marketing innovation management, Kuwata is the co-author of several chapters and complete books, including Evolution into a smart society, published in 2015.

Kazuya Masu - President

Kazuya Masu has served as the 22nd president of Tokyo Tech since April 1, 2018. His flexible, dialogue-based leadership has guided the Institute during a time of important transformation, uniting Tokyo Tech's diverse research centers, laboratories, and units into one integrated hub. Together with his profound understanding of Tokyo Tech, Masu's ability to inspire and manage change through collaborative teamwork continues to propel the Institute toward the achievement of a shared vision. A specialist in electronic devices, integrated circuits, and wireless sensor networks, Masu earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in engineering from Tokyo Tech in 1977, 1979, and 1982 respectively. In April 1982, he took an assistant professor position at the Research Institute of Electrical Communication at Tohoku University, where he became associate professor in 1993. In June 2000, Masu returned to Tokyo Tech as professor at the Precision and Intelligence Laboratory. He subsequently held professorial positions at the Integrated Research Institute from 2005 to 2010, the Solutions Research Laboratory from 2010 to 2014, and the Frontier Research Center from 2014 to 2016. For the two years prior to his inauguration, Masu served as the first director-general of the Institute of Innovative Research.

Osamu Watanabe

Osamu Watanabe has been executive vice president for research at Tokyo Tech since April 1, 2018. After earning his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Tokyo Tech's Department of Information Science in 1980, 1982, and 1987 respectively, Watanabe joined the University of California, Santa Barbara as a Ky Fan visiting associate professor. He returned to Tokyo Tech in 1989 as lecturer in the School of Engineering, becoming associate professor in 1990. Beginning in 1995, Watanabe spent two years at Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as senior scientific research specialist while concurrently lecturing at Tokyo Tech. He was appointed professor at the Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering in 1997. From 2007 to 2011, Watanabe headed the Global Scientific Information and Computing Center (GSIC). He was a member of the Education and Research Council from 2015 to 2016, and professor and dean at the School of Computing for the two years prior to his current appointment. Throughout his career, Watanabe has helped organize 14 annual programming contests for high school students utilizing Tokyo Tech's supercomputer. An editor of Theory of Computing Systems since 1991, Watanabe also edited Theoretical Computer Science from 1992 to 2016. He has been the president of the European Association of Theoretical Computer Science, Japan Chapter since 2010, and served on the board of trustees of the Computational Complexity Foundation Inc. from 2016 to 2017.

Yasutsugu OGURA

After earning his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Institute's Department of Metallurgical Engineering in 1974 and 1978 respectively, Ogura joined Nippon Kokan K.K. (NKK). In 1993, he was selected as superintendent of the company's No.3 steelmaking shop FUKUYAMA WORKS in Hiroshima Prefecture. Ogura became executive assistant at NKK's Environmental Solutions Center in 2000. After NKK and Kawasaki Steel Corporation merged to form JFE Holdings, Inc. in 2003, Ogura continued at the company's Environmental Solutions Center, holding the position of executive assistant at the Planning and Marketing Department. Four years later, he assumed two new positions - vice president and East Japan Works assistant general superintendent at JFE Steel Corporation. In 2008, Ogura became a member of the Board and senior vice president at JFE Engineering Corporation. Two years later, he was promoted to executive vice president. In 2012, he returned to JFE Steel Corporation as executive vice president. Ogura took over as president and representative director of JFE Galvanizing and Coating Co., Ltd. in 2015. He served as executive advisor for the company from April 2018 to March 2020.
