Dr. Nathan Fischel - CEO, Founder

Dr. Nathan Fischel is the founder of DAFNA Capital Management and has been its CEO since inception in January 1999. Dr. Fischel was raised in Germany, went to boarding school in France, attended Medical School at the Technion School of Medicine in Israel and served his internship year at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. He completed his residency and fellowship in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the Children's Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School in Boston, and his postgraduate research training in Molecular Genetics at Oxford University in England. Dr. Fischel was Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA School of Medicine, and Director of Molecular Hematology and attending physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He is currently Professor Emeritus at UCLA. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed scientific and medical manuscripts and book chapters, has been the principal investigator of multiple National Institutes of Health ("NIH") funded research grants, has served repeatedly on internal and external review panels at the NIH, and in 2005 was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve for four years on the Advisory Council of one of the NIH's institutes. In 1993, Dr. Fischel co-founded a venture capital-backed genomics biotechnology company, and served as the Chief Scientific Officer and as a member of the Board of Directors; the company was later acquired by Warner-Lambert (Pfizer).

Dr. Yuanye (Hammond) Sun

Prior to joining the firm in March 2022, Dr. Yuanye (Hammond) Sun briefly interned with DAFNA Capital Management, LLC in 2021. Dr. Sun obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Southern California in 2022 with a Gilead Fellowship, and a BS in Biochemistry from McGill University in 2017 with Dean's Honor.

Fariba F. Ghodsian - Chief Investment Officer

Dr. Fariba Ghodsian is the Chief Investment Officer of DAFNA Capital Management. Dr. Ghodsian completed her postdoctoral fellowship in protein modeling at Harvard Medical School. She received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Oxford University in England, M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MBA from the University of California at Los Angeles, and B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. Prior to joining the firm in 2002, Dr. Ghodsian was Managing Director of Healthcare Research at Roth Capital Partners. Before this, she was a senior biotechnology analyst at Lehman Brothers, Hancock Institutional, and Wedbush Morgan Securities, as well as Director of Business Development at Medclone and a research scientist at Allergan Pharmaceuticals. In 2002, Dr. Ghodsian received the Wall Street Journal's "Best on the Street" award, as one of the top five biotechnology analysts. In 2015, she was profiled in the book "Women of the Street: Why Female Money Managers Generate Higher Returns". She has been a frequent guest speaker at conferences, has authored multiple scientific publications, holds several patents, and has served on the NIH's Scientific Grant Review Board. She is involved with several non-profit organizations and currently serves on the board and investment committee of the American Technion Society.

Michelle Belson

Prior to joining the firm in June 2018, Michelle was an office manager and executive assistant at Ubatuba Acai in Los Angeles for 4 years, an executive assistant and human resources analyst at ESPN, Sao Paulo, Brazil for 4 years, and worked for 5 years in Japan in manufacturing as a ‘dekasegi'. She earned her B.S. in Executive Assistance from University of Technology in Sao Paulo, graduated with a Master's Degree in Human Resources from Business School of Sao Paulo and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from International American University in Los Angeles. In addition to English, Ms. Belson speaks fluent Portuguese and Spanish, and is conversational in Japanese and French.

Mr. David Fischel

Over 10 years of experience as a financial analyst of public and private life science companies. Prior to joining the firm full-time in 2008, Mr. David Fischel was a research analyst at SCP Vitalife, a healthcare venture capital fund. Mr. Fischel also serves as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Stereotaxis Inc, a publicly traded medical technology company. Mr. Fischel completed his B.S. magna cum laude in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Accounting at the University of California at Los Angeles and received his MBA from Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Financial Analyst, and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst.

Mr. John Scola

Over 30 years of experience as a trader in equity securities. Over 10 years focused in the life science space. Prior to joining the firm in 2002, Mr. John Scola was head trader for Meisenbach Capital Management, a San Diego-based hedge fund. From 1981 to 2000, Mr. Scola was head trader of Small Cap Equities for Trust Company of the West, a global money management firm headquartered in Los Angeles.

Ms. Xun Lin - CFO, Chief Compliance Officer

Prior to joining the firm in 2004, Ms. Xun Lin was a staff accountant at David Lu & Co., CPA. From 1996 through 2000, she was a lecturer at the Financial Technical Institute, Hangzhou, China. She earned her B.S. in economics from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, China in 1996, graduated with a Master's Degree in Accounting from Texas A&M University in 2003, and received her CFA designation in 2007.
