In 1986, former West Germany ambassador to China Pei Peiyi made a special trip from Beijing to Qingdao General Refrigerator Factory. Mr. Pei was deeply impressed by Haier's efficient operation under the leadership of the young Director Zhang Ruimin.
Haier chairman and CEO Zhang Ruimin sparks vigorous debate when he speaks about the Haier "win-win model of individual-goal combination" at top European business institutes IMD (Switzerland) and IESE (Spain). IESE writes up the Haier multicultural adaptation of "individual-goal" for its case study database. IMD gives Zhang an award for IMD Management Thought Leader.
In 1998, Zhang Ruimin was invited to give lectures at Harvard University. The case that Haier culture activated shock fish became part of the textbook of Harvard Business School, and Zhang Ruimin became the first Chinese entrepreneur lecturing in Harvard University.
On June 26th, 1996, Haier won the internationally highest honor Five Star Diamond Award conferred by American Academy of Restaurant and Hospitality Sciences, and Haier CEO Zhang Ruimin was awarded Five Star Personal Lifetime Achievement Award. Haier won consumers' recognition in a wider range.
