Dr. Answorth A. Allen, MD, is an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, specializing in shoulder, knee, and elbow surgery, and a Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Dr. Allen is a team orthopedist for the New York Knicks basketball team and a former team physician for the New York Mets. He is also a team physician for USA Basketball. In addition, Dr. Allen is an orthopedic consultant for the West Indies Cricket Board of Control. He is the former team physician for the Long Island Rough Riders soccer team.
Additionally, he was an assistant team physician for both the New York Saints lacrosse team and the New York State Racing Association. At one time, he was also a staff physician for the New York State Athletic Commission and the Hunter Mountain Ski Sports Center. While in Pittsburgh, he was assistant team physician for the University of Pittsburgh and assistant company physician for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. He is the author of over 150 articles and book chapters on shoulder, knee, and elbow problems.

Dr. James "Beamer" Carr II is an Assistant Attending Orthopedic Surgeon in the Sports Medicine Institute at HSS and an Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. He grew up in Virginia where his father was an orthopedic trauma surgeon. His experiences as a collegiate baseball player and admiration for his late father inspired his specialization in orthopedic sports medicine.
Prior to joining HSS, Dr. Carr graduated from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. He completed medical school at Wake Forest University and orthopedic surgery residency at University of Virginia. Dr. Carr did a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery where he worked as a member of the medical staff for the New York Mets. He continues to work closely with the New York Mets and serves as an assistant team physician for the organization.
Clinically, Dr. Carr uses arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques to treat most sports related injuries. He has a particular interest in shoulder, elbow and knee problems, including: rotator cuff tears, shoulder dislocations, labrum tears, ulnar collateral ligament tears, distal biceps tears, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, and patella instability.
He is very active in both clinical and laboratory research that focuses on injury prevention, enhanced rehabilitation and use of biologic agents (e.g. platelet-rich plasma/PRP/growth factors). Dr. Carr continues to participate in basic science, clinical and biomechanical research, including development of a rat model for ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (i.e. Tommy John surgery). He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on shoulder, elbow and knee problems.

Lisa R. Callahan, MD, joined Hospital for Special Surgery's Sports Medicine Department in 1994. She is board certified in primary care/sports medicine and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Currently, she serves as Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Player Care at Madison Square Garden Sports, where she oversees the care of the Knicks (NBA), Rangers (NHL), Westchester Knicks (NBA D-League) and the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL). She was recently elected to a second term as President of the NBA Team Physicians Association, after previously serving as Secretary/Treasurer (2013-2015) and Vice President (2015-2017). In spring of 2014, she was awarded the honor of NBA Team Physician of the Year. She was also named a team physician for the 2014-16 USA Basketball Men's National Team and was with both the men's and women's gold-medal winning teams in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Dr. Callahan has served as a Team Physician for USA Basketball since 2014.
Dr. Callahan's extensive experience has also included serving as a team physician for the WUSA New York Power, NFL New York Giants, Stanford and San Jose State Universities, and as medical coordinator and event physician for triathlons, biathlons, 1994 and 1999 World Cup Soccer, 1999 Avon Running Global Championships, 1995 World Rowing Championships, 1993 Olympic Gymnastics Exhibition, 1993 International Sumo Tournament and the NCAA Golf Championships.

Louis A. Shapiro is President and CEO of HSS. He has served in this role since October 2006, overseeing all strategic and operational aspects of the Hospital and fulfilling its mission - to advance the field of musculoskeletal medicine through world-class patient care, research and education. Under Mr. Shapiro's leadership, HSS has experienced significant growth, expansion of facilities and recognition as the world leader in its specialty areas of orthopedics, rheumatology and their related disciplines.
Mr. Shapiro is a strong proponent of the link between internal culture and performance. Mr. Shapiro has more than 30 years of healthcare experience, including as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania, and as a leader in the healthcare practice at McKinsey & Company. He began his career at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he served in a number of capacities.
In the past, Mr. Shapiro has served as Board Chairman of the Greater New York Hospital Association, for which he continues to serve on the Executive Committee and others. He also serves on the Board of Crutches for Kids, Move Mountains Foundation and Latitude Food Allergy Care.
Mr. Shapiro earned his BS and MHA degrees from the University of Pittsburgh.

Struan Coleman MD, PhD, is a world-renowned, board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip preservation and sports medicine at HSS and the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia. Dr. Coleman earned a medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and holds a D.Phil in Microbiology from Oxford University, England. He completed both his residency in Orthopedic Surgery and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at HSS. During his fellowship, Dr. Coleman worked as an assistant physician for the New York Giants football team and is currently Team Physician for the New York Mets baseball team.
Dr. Coleman focuses on the treatment and management of sports related injuries of the hip, knee, and shoulder, with a particular interest in hip arthroscopy and hip preservation. In his practice, he treats young, athletic patients with hip pathology; in addition, he has performed arthroscopic surgery on many high level athletes with hip problems, including NFL players from the Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, and Washington Red Skins.
Dr. Coleman also combines his clinical practice with research relating to the fields of hip arthroscopy and sports medicine, and he has published numerous articles and written chapters in those fields. Dr. Coleman holds numerous patents for technologies that are utilized by sports medicine physicians and surgeons. Most recently, he patented the technology behind the CyMedica QB1 Rehabilitation System, which is used to treat quadriceps atrophy. Dr. Coleman is the founder of CyMedica Orthopedics and he is on the board of the company.

Dr. Theodore Blaine is recognized nationally and internationally for his expertise in orthopedics and shoulder and elbow surgery. Prior to joining HSS, he was the Physician in Chief of the Bone and Joint Institute and the former Interim Chairman of the Yale University Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. Before then, he practiced for eight years with Columbia Orthopedics - NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York, and four years with University Orthopedics at Brown University.
Dr. Blaine has authored and edited over 100 papers and textbook chapters in orthopaedic surgery, published two textbooks on minimally invasive shoulder and elbow surgery, and is currently Co-Editor in Chief and Founder of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty. He is the recipient for multiple grants and teaching awards for his commitment to academic medicine and orthopedic research.
His professional training includes fellowships in Shoulder and Sports Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Elbow Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, and Musculoskeletal Research at the University of Rochester. He is an active member of multiple orthopedic societies, including the American Orthopedic Association, the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, the American Society for Sports Medicine, and the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. He has been recognized as one of the "Best Doctors in America" and Castle Connolly "Top Doctors" in the New York Metro Area.
Dr. Blaine's clinical interests and experience include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and elbow, orthopaedic trauma, sports medicine and athletic injuries, and orthopedic research. A recognized specialist in minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder and elbow, Dr. Blaine has pioneered several new medical and surgical techniques including injectable medications for shoulder arthritis, minimally invasive shoulder replacement and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. He also lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on the latest technologies in shoulder replacement surgery, including reverse shoulder replacement, resurfacing and stemless bone-sparing designs. He is one of the few physicians in Connecticut who performs complex procedures including muscle transfer operations, superior capsule reconstruction, and revision shoulder and elbow surgery.
A former competitive athlete in swimming, football and lacrosse (Avon Old Farms School '84 and Princeton University '88), Dr. Blaine enjoys treating all athletic injuries in patients of all ages. He has significant expertise in treating shoulder and elbow instability, labral tears, and tendonitis of the shoulder and elbow (impingement syndrome and tennis elbow). He has been team physician at the collegiate and professional level including soccer, football, hockey, lacrosse, and baseball. Most recently, he was team physician for the Yale University Athletic Teams, and he is currently the Head Team Physician for the Darien and Stamford HS Football teams.

Dr. Briner is a sports medicine physician specializing in the treatment of acute and overuse injuries in active patients. Board certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine, Dr. Briner completed his medical school training at The Ohio State University; Family Medicine residency at MacNeal Hospital in Illinois; and Sports Medicine fellowship at Marshall University where he served as a team physician for the Thundering Herd.
Dr. Briner has served as a team physician for the New York Lizards, WNBA Chicago Sky, US National Soccer Teams, and several high school and college teams as well. He is currently the Head Team Physician for the US National Volleyball Teams, in addition to chairing the Sports Medicine and Performance Commission for USA Volleyball. For several years, he has been a member of the Medical Commission of the FIVB, Volleyball's international governing body, where he was selected as Beach Volleyball Medical Delegate to the London Olympics.
