Brendan Hughes

Brendan joined ORP Law in 2014 after articling in the Toronto office of a large national law firm, then practicing for several years with a boutique commercial litigation firm. Brendan became a partner of ORP Law in 2017. Brendan practices in the areas of insurance defence litigation and media law and has a broad background in corporate/commercial litigation. He represents clients in a wide range of disputes, including contractual disputes, occupiers' and product liability matters as well as professional liability matters. Brendan further represents broadcasters, newspapers and other media organizations in the litigation of claims involving defamation and in proceedings involving sealing orders and publication bans. Brendan has also worked in a team environment on large, complex litigation including shareholder and partnership disputes, major real estate development and property disputes, banking fraud actions involving receiverships, Mareva and Anton Piller orders and various forms of related relief. Brendan has appeared in all levels of Court in Ontario, and before the Human Rights Tribunal, the License Appeal Tribunal, the Real Estate Council of Ontario Discipline Committee and the Landlord and Tenant Board. Brendan received his B.A. and LL.B. from the University of British Columbia in 2000 and 2005 respectively and was called to the Ontario bar in 2006.

Cameron Foster

Cameron's practice focuses on litigation and advocacy across a wide range of areas. Cameron is a Certified Insurance Professional - a designation he obtained to better advise ORP's clients with complex Insurance Coverage disputes. Cameron works diligently to provide clients practical advice in an efficient manner. He has appeared on behalf of clients before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (including the Commercial List and the Divisional Court), as well as the Ontario Court of Appeal. Before joining ORP Law in 2016, Cameron practiced with a major law firm in Halifax, Nova Scotia. There, Cameron focused on insurance defence and commercial litigation. Cameron received his B.A. from Dalhousie University in 2010 and his J.D. from the Schulich School of Law, at Dalhousie University, in 2013. Cameron was called to the Bar in Nova Scotia in 2014, and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2016.

Donna Kelly

Donna has been providing valuable legal assistance to counsel for over three Decades in insurance defence litigation involving defence of errors and omissions claims brought against insurance brokers, real estate agents and other professionals, property and casualty insurance-related matters, issues relating to insurance coverage, bodily injury claims, products liability, multi- toxic tort matters and environmental claims, and has extensive experience in these areas. Donna provides a myriad of legal assistance to counsel including meeting with clients and opposing counsel, drafting pleadings, reporting letters, status reports and all general correspondence, as well as preparation and organization of all documentation necessary for motions, discovery, trial and settlement. Donna graduated with High Honours (Dean's Honour List) with a Legal Administration Diploma from Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto in 1983. She is an Honours Graduate of the General Insurance Essentials Program of the Insurance Institute of Canada (top student in Ontario) in 1989 and attained her Associateship designation (A.I.I.C.) with Honours in 1998. She has been with the Firm since its inception in 1994.

Doug Richardson

Doug has over two decades of experience providing advice and representation to news organizations and other publishers or broadcasters. His approach is focused on providing solutions in a practical and timely manner. Doug's practice includes: Providing pre-publication advice to news organizations, book publishers, websites, podcasts and other content providers on a 24-7 basis, defending news organizations and other publishers in defamation, privacy and copyright matters, advising and representing news organizations with regard to publication bans, advising and representing news organizations with regard to access to courts and tribunals, advising and representing clients with regard to access to information matters and negotiating and drafting commercial agreements in relation to the licensing of content and other commercial matters. Doug is a frequent provider of legal seminars and author of articles concerning media law issues. Doug received his B.A. Hons from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1991 and his LL.B. from the University of Western Ontario in 1994. He was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1996.

Mark O'Donnell

Mark has extensive litigation experience involving property and casualty insurance-related matters, issues relating to insurance coverage, bodily injury claims, defence of errors and omissions claims brought against insurance brokers, real estate agents and other professionals, defence of sexual abuse claims against institutions and for insurers in related coverage matters and acting for domestic and foreign primary and excess insurance carriers in the defence of insured claims and in coverage disputes. Mark is an advisor to leading domestic and international insurers with respect to numerous cases involving multi-party toxic tort claims, environmental litigation and insurance coverage matters. He is coordinating counsel in connection with the defence of numerous toxic tort and hazardous waste site claims against insureds. He provides legal research and drafts opinion associated with various types of insurance-related issues. He also provides assistance to carriers with respect to policy wordings and drafting. Mark also has extensive trial and appellate experience as legal counsel in insurance-related matters, and considerable arbitration, ADR and mediation experience. Mark received his Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from McMaster University in 1979. He was awarded his Bachelor of Laws degree from York University in 1982. He was called to the Bar in 1984.

Shernaz Patel

Shernaz joined ORP Law in 2022. Her practice includes coverage advice and insurance defence litigation. Prior to joining ORP Law, Shernaz practiced at a boutique insurance defence firm in London, Ontario where her practice focused on motor vehicle accidents, personal injury, and products liability. Shernaz earned her B.A. from the University of Toronto in 2016 and her J.D. in 2020 from the University of Western Ontario. Shernaz also completed the Global Sustainability Certification Program through the University of Western Ontario, and Public Policy Analysis Program through the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Steven Canto

Steven is a Senior Partner at ORP Law. While he has a broad insurance litigation practice, he specializes in the areas of professional liability, tort motor vehicle claims, occupiers' liability, product liability, as well as construction and property claims. Steven thoroughly enjoys being a litigator and is a vigorous advocate with an uncompromising attention to detail. He takes a proactive approach to litigation, and is therefore able to achieve expeditious outcomes for even the most complex of files. He prides himself on providing exceptional service and value to his clients by obtaining the most favourable results in as efficient a manner as possible. Steven has appeared before Administrative Tribunals, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Divisional Court, and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
